Cheap Areas to Live in Australia

Hi.

New to this forum and asking the question, where are the cheapest towns, cities, villages to live in Australia, preferably along the East Coast heading up towards Tweed area.

Thanks

    Tas

  • Yeah all of Tassie except some suburbs in Hobart or Launceston, anything on the mainland on the coast would probably all be the same. For a little cheaper just look at smaller towns. You can search domain by map so you don't have to know town names.

  • Never been to Tas, is it as bad (cold) as they say?

    • Australia isn’t considered a cold climate country.

        To whom?

Goulburn, Canberra, Bright etc etc all get pretty cold. We actually have snow in some places you know. :) So I guess Tassie would get pretty chilly being closer to the Antartctic than all those spots on the mainland. Is it cold 'compared' to Siberia? Probably not, but then that's not what I was asking. :)

      • Tas isn't Australia.. havent you noticed Tas is always excluded from deals

In the middle of winter it isn't as cold as Canberra or Bathurst (excepting on mountains etc). Generally milder than most places on the mainland (doesn't get as hot in summer either)

Do you need to earn a living also?

  • cheap as in cheap housing ?

There are units for sale under $75k in Gladstone. Be a good place if you like the warmth and fishing etc.

    • $75k in Gladstone

That sound a bit cheap. What’s wrong with this region?

Massive over build during mining boom. Work dried up, people moved out, now you can't find tenants.
It will be a few years till it sorts out, but then the units will have doubled in price - but you need to be able to pay the rates and strata in the mean time.

        • Thanks.

$75k would make for a reasonable cheap holiday property.

          @whooah1979:

But then you'd have to go to Gladstone for your holiday.
          Pass.

        • @Drew22: there's the smelter and the bay that the smelter polluted, what's not to like?

      • +1 to mskegg's post. I grew up in Gladstone and my family still live there. The rate that new estates and units popped up, as well as the rents and sale prices for existing houses, during the mining boom was absolutely insane. The construction phase of the projects is well and truly over so nearly all the workers that came to town have now left.

There are definitely bargains to be had. A mate bought a basic 2 bedroom 1 bathroom unit for $68k around 12 months ago, currently rented for $80 or 90 pw. You can get reasonable houses in decent areas from around the $150k mark.

Only downsides are that lenders require a higher LVR because it's a risky area, and you'd be game to move to town in hope of finding employment as a lot of businesses have shut in recent years.

Bali although there are rumours that it is actually not part of Australia.

    • Really? Seems full of Aussies to me.

  • You can always go out into the middle of Australia and pitch a tent somewhere..

    • What does a desert boner have to do with OP's question?

  • cheapest? sydney cbd. outside of central station. in a tent. free

  • Lismore, Casino, Grafton
