Swimming Pool Re-line or Paint?

Hi,

I have a 10m x 4m approx. fibreglass below ground salt water pool that is quite old and stained on the ground and around the side walls.

I would love to freshen it up. Had the googles on in it this week and it's quite nasty seeing the stains (rust, cracks) etc.

Any cost effective ways of getting this back to a good standard?

Cheers

  • After the same answer but mine is concrete. No cracks, no leaks just marks on the bottom and starting to show its age since it was last done by the previous owner.

    • Just drain it out and give it an acid wash

After the same answer but mine is plastic, in the shape of a clam, and available for $25 from kmart.

    • I would re-line it with fibreglass. Still cheaper than buying a real swimming pool

    • try to crack it, then claim a replacement from kmart due to water leak.

You can have them refinished, it’s not cheap. It’s not a job you could do if you have no experience.
The problem is the strips of metal reinforcement in the fiberglass start to corrode and they swell and cause the fiberglass to become uneven and stained.
Best to get a few quotes and see what a professional thinks.
If I had to ball park I would say $5-15k

I have a similar situation also, fibreglass pool. it is around $10k to get it done professionaly which seems pretty high.

I have been looking at DIY, it is a pretty complex job. Emptying the pool is pretty risky, apparently if you do it wrong the sides might collapse or the pool might float on the water table out of the ground - both of these scenarios would buying a new pool.

I have kinda given up getting it done as it is too difficult to DIY and too expensive to get it done profesionally.

We had some pros empty the pool to fix some leaks and all the paving moved slighlty.

    • Had a quote at around $4K for a re-paint which includes all paint, equipment and materials needed etc. Sounds okay but not sure how long a paint job would last.

I don't think repainting is the way to go.
