Free Cloudflare Privacy-Friendly DNS Service 1.1.1.1

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Cloudflare launched its 1.1.1.1 consumer DNS service with a focus on privacy on April 1st - not a joke.
Configure you router's DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 to benefit from it.
From what it looks like, it's expected to be better than Google's 8.8.8.8 etc.
For more details go to https://1.1.1.1 with your browser.

    Nice! Thanks OP

  • can anyone explain what this is for in noob terms?

    • You use this instead of your isp's one for circumventing blocks put in place. They say it's harder for you to be tracked but not sure how effective

The DNS provider can see every website you visit. So if you're using Google, the world's largest tracking business, for DNS, you are definitely being tracked.

          I was talking about CloudFlare

This transfers a domain like ozbargain.com.au to the IP address . If you are a newb better don't touch such settings or you might be offline for a while

      • It takes a few seconds to change DNS servers. Even if you mistype it you will not be offline for 'a while' - unless that means the couple more seconds to edit again.

Ozbargain sites are servers with ip addresses ie 64.87.57.9. They're hard to remember that's where domain names come in. Ie ozbargain.com.au. but your computer doesn't know what ip addresses that ozbargain.com.au has. That's why your Internet settings come with default isp dns. But it can be manually set to a different dns such as 1.1.1.1

      • Now how are these services great? You can bypass Australia's censorship firewall, faster domain to ip resolution, less single point of failure (ie isp dns dies). Not sure what else there is

        • Also, might be more reliable than a local ISP's ones. At times, my ISP DNS servers can be flaky. Cloudflare also claims they're fast, like ~15ms response time.

      • analogously - is it basically like using a different phone book? as opposed to the one provided by your ISP? if so, is this new dns as extensive as the isp one? any lag? or should i go do some reading xD

it's expected to be better than Google's

Because Cloudflare doesn't make 90% of it's money from tracking every single thing you do (meaning every single website in the case of DNS) and then serving unwanted content -ads, when they're visible - that causes people to lose money.

The info URL is https://1.1.1.1 Mods failed to fix this after my report and I can only report once.

Yes it's the fastest public DNS atm
Been using it since last night replacing Google's, no problem so far.
Reliability, uptime, and consistent speed when more people are aware of this is another story…

    • won't it interfere with the performance of local cdns that isps offer using their dns servers?

i wonder how much they paid to secure that net range, 1.1.1.1

    • I thought exactly the same thing when I saw it. I thought that range was used for military?

  • Just configured on my PC. No noticeable website loading speed difference. Perhaps it's a tiny bit slower? Dunno

    • Depends on the location of the server.

This is gonna be a huge PITA for me. For starters Cisco defaults have been 1.1.1.1 for years so they're is going to be heaps of reconfiguring.

Also interesting history behind the IP when APNIC owned it, as everytime they tried to use it for something it basically got DDoS'd straight away due to the unauthorised use by other people. Makes sense for a company like Cloudflare to manage it who have the capacity to mitigate DDoS attacks.

      Also there's a security oriented free DNS service Quad9 - 9.9.9.9.
I just learnt of its existence due to all the PR around 1.1.1.1.

I hav been using openDNS for a long time. It can filters website by categories as well, eg set it to block malware sites etc.

  • OOo, lets try this one…..see if its any better than Google's…

  • Can you change this in your router, out only on your PC etc? I've tried the former before and found I couldn't browse afterwards.

    • I've done it in my router and worked fine
