How about this epic 50¢ deal during Feb 2018.

    • Price error and 24 can slab. Great price but not quite comparable.

    • That was a good deal mate

  • +3

    with added slave workers' tears

    • +4

Only the best quality tears were selected

      • +4

The tears that John West rejected.

  • +1

    But no beans deal.

    • +1

Yes, there're beans deal, 75¢ for a tin of cannellini beans.

  • Waiting for the australian producer supporter blah blah blah

    • Laziofogna your user name tells me you support Roma

      • Boo! Hiss!

    • SPC ftw!

  • Yes, this is indeed an opportunity to stock up. Thanks OP.

    How do you pronounce tomato?

    • +1

      Tow-mate-o

      • +1

        Tow-Mar-o

    • Tow mud tow

    • Po tay to

  • +1

who is this Annalisa? and why am i paying less just because she is the one who peeled or diced them?

    • +3

The best peeled tomatoes in Italy was ‘Graziella’ for ages, competitors needed to name their product on similar fashion and picked another female first name

    • +1

Anal Lisa sounds like a fun woman to hang around with.

  • +5

This is product dumping. It would cost 67 cents for the can and the shipping from Italy.

    • +1

Great! I love a bargain. And I'm not racist either. The environmental aspect worries me, though.

  • $1.35 for this can is not a good price anyway.
Coles sell the same stuff but Australian Certified Organic Tomatoes (from Italy) for $1.10 for 400g.

    • +3

So 67 cents is still a great price.

  • I got $500 gift cards to use, does this shit go off. I'll get 100 cans

Any ideas what to use them on

    • Italian dishes. They don't go off.

      • We should stop exporting cheap products, too! In fact, let's have a Trump-style trade war!

    • +1

      Canned shit doesn't go off.

Buy staples like olive oil, rice, spices. Toiletries. Expensive ice cream lol.

Cook spag Bol, Tex med chilli, jambalaya, butter chicken.

  • Why so cheap? Near expire?

    • Just a nationwide special. It's in the catalogue.

    • EU (European Union) pays subsidies to Italian growers and the manufacturers.

  • Italians dumping on Oz again I see

    • +3

      Excellent! Europeans subsidising our food!

  • is diced the preferred format or peeled?

    • +1

Peeled. I find I always end up with about 20 stalk pieces when they're pre diced. Rather cut of the ends myself then dice/mash them.

      • cool thanks mate, good to know :)

    • Definitely peeled. Diced is the stuff not good enough to put in the peeled.

  • What makes this better than the 60c coles/homebrand tomato cans?

    • +1

It doesn't taste metallic and you don't need to balance the flavour with sugar.

    • Usually not much.

Tuna is actually more plentiful (%) in the homebrand cans than Johnwest lol!

  • +2

I started here, and spent the last hour looking at canned tomato dumping, fakes and San Marzano facts. Did you know 95% of San Marzano's are fakes. There goes my evening.

PS I don't mind this brand for every day stuff but spend a bit more for pizza toppings and fresh pasta sauces.

    • Wouldn't you use tomato paste for pizza topping?

      • +1

Mix tomato paste with crushed tomatoes and some other herbs = cheap and easy spread.

    • What brands do you suggest? I've been using both coles and woolies brand tomatoes they are marked Aussie and they're ok I guess.

  • +1

I really don't find these that great. Stick to Mutti (the Polpa Finely Chopped Tomatoes at Coles are incredible).

    • +1

Knew which ones you were talking without knowing their name. They are fine as fine can get but they taste great.

    • +1

Agreed. Once you've tried Mutti, there's no going back!

    • +1

Interesting. I've always bought Annalisa (I don't know why. Maybe they are the cheapest?).

I'll give Mutti a try. 12 pack at Woolies is $1.17 per can. Double the price of Annalisa though. Hmmmmm. This deal is hard to ignore.

      • Coles frequently have the Mutti Polpa ones I mentioned above in a 2 pack for $2. Coles have much more of the Mutti range than Woolworths do. Give it a try and you’ll never go back.

  • What does everyone do with their peeled tomatoes? Interested in hearing your ideas. I love making spaghetti bolognese!

    • +1

Common base for curries. I use it for butter chicken. :D

      • Oh nice how do you make your butter chicken? Can of tomatoes, can of coconut milk, and…. mmm sounding yummy already :)

        • +2

          I use this recipe: https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2012/05/floyd-cardozs-bu…

Minus the fenugreek leaves because I don't know where to get them, limes because I didn't have any at hand, and replacing honey with sugar because the ants got to my honey stash.

        • @Zaenille: Oh nice thanks for the recipe I'll give it a go. The honey in it sounds really interesting too. Also if you're looking for fenugreek maybe try an Indian or Chinese supermarket, you should be able to pick some up there.

With my really basic curry throw togethers I've been doing this -

          • 1 can of tomatoes
          • 1 can of coconut milk (or recently substituting with skim milk)
          • 1/2 jar Valcom curry paste (any type they're all nice and ingredients seem pretty natural etc)
          • 1 tbspn tomato paste
          • some kind of meat
          • basmati rice

Comes out pretty yummo and is easy!

        • Oops and vegies, just whatever eg. carrots, potatoes, peas, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, etc

  • The best Italian tomato brands out there are Pomi and Ciro with the next step up being San Marzano which use a heirloom variety, the famous plum tomato. They are grown in rich volcanic soil at the base of Mount Vesuvius in a region known as Valle Del Sarno.

I read about a chef that once lived near a tomato sauce producing facility in Italy who would watch trucks delivering rotting tomatoes. The smell was so bad you would get sick walking past. Those tomatoes are then heavily processed into passata sauce to look just like any other passata sauce you buy. Some processed foods are even treated with carbon monoxide gas.

In summary, you pay for what you get.

  • +1

Before you stock up, you may want to read up on the illegal chemical waste dumping by the camorra mafia in Italy's Campania region. This region has been dubbed the "Triangle of Death" due to increasing cancer rates among locals.

Sorry Italy, but until you sort out your mafioso problem, I prefer to not eat any of your locally produced food stuffs (but I'll happily cook Italian recipes using ingredients from just about anywhere else).
