Parrot DISCO FPV Bundle with Skycontroller 2 $469 Inc Shipping @ Kogan or Pickup @ JB Hi-Fi

120

Seriously cheap price for this - RRP an insane $2,195 but previously at Kogan $499. Now they have dropped the price to $469 and shipping is free. If you get one of those $50 vouchers (technically two vouchers - one for $30 and one for $20) off eBay for around $10, that could bring the affective price down to $429.

FYI JB HiFi also have it for $469 (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/drones-robotics/all-drones/parrot/…) so if you can get discount JB Vouchers you'll also be able to get it cheaper (if not perhaps as cheap as Kogan with the vouchers) with the possible advantage of being able to pick it up from a store…..

update Also available at Officeworks on eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Parrot-Disco-FPV-Drone-and-Cockp…) for $452.20 after using current 5% off code (thanks, leTintin)

The only issue I see is the buzzkill police make it harder to find somewhere to fly it - the drone/plane itself weighs 750gm so it's in a more restricted category. For the rules check here: https://www.casa.gov.au/modelaircraft. Main restrictions are can't operate within 5.5km of an airport, have to be able to fly it where you can see it rather than via goggles, can't fly within 30m of anyone else, can't fly higher than 120m….

  • I notice can also get from Officeworks Ebay for $452 (with 5% code), free express delivery.

  • Judging by reviews on Amazon, this drone is to be avoided. It certainly won't work for me as it can't hover, right? Hard to use as a high altitude camera if it has to move (like a plane).

    • It's not going to provide the stability of a quadcopter for photography, but can fly a lot faster / further than hovering type drones in this price bracket.

It would be great if you lived on a large property. There's a cool video on Youtube of one doing a 57km flight across water.

To be fair that one was modded.

I think this is good value but I'd fly it 3 times then get bored.

          @Merlict:

Twice, got chased by birds in a big park, got annoyed, and brought it at the last special at 1200 :( check out my posted deal, i'm burning mate!

    • It is, frankly, an expensive toy - I know I would have been pretty annoyed if I'd bought it for the full retail price when it first came out. You can get updated firmware (https://community.parrot.com/t5/Parrot-Disco/bd-p/Disco) for it that might address some of the issues described on Amazon that the early adopters suffered. Note that this Disco has been discontinued in other words is no longer being made (hence the discount) - https://www.parrot.com/us/drones/parrot-disco-fpv. The app will however continue to be updated, and will continue to support the Disco, and spare parts will continue to be available.

If you want something better than this, then something from DJI like the Phantom 4 would probably be the go - hovers, built by a company that's been doing it for a long time - but a lot more expensive.

PM me for free Kogan $30 voucher valid until April 15, 2018. I got this from deal posted here. Cheers :)

    • Voucher applied!
      Thank you @Smokey010 :)

      • No worries, all good. Sorry for others who had PM me.

  • waiting for it to drop even further..

  • The problem is it's a Parrot.

They overpromise and never deliver. Particularly with promised features not being available on Android with their 2.0 drones. Always "coming soon"… never came! No idea what they are like with this model, I've lost interest in everything they do because of their crappy ways.

  • Does anybody know if you can pre plan sorties for this drone and let the autopilot fly them?

    • So basically you can map out a route on a map, and let it fly automatically, it is illegal to do this in australia, since you need a visual on your drone at all time, but you can do this, watch video's on youtube people do it!

      • I would still have a visual of my drone i just dont actually want to fly it. What i want is the recon info :-)

    • I think you need to purchase the pro pilot version of the app (Extra $20 I think)

      • $30.83 AUD. Just paid for it a moment ago.

Thanks 65535 (in decimal) I bought one last month when they first went down to $499, thought that was a good deal ;)

Havnt flown yet or even attached to the app either. Hope to have awesome flights .

  • Received mine already. :)
    Charging now. Flying later.

  • Don't know if anyone else has got the chance to fly yet.
I took mine out in 27.8Km winds for the first time around. To be honest I thought this was going to be my first and only flight.
Too easy to fly. Took 6 flights before the battery went flat (13%). Awesome fun!

I probably did something wrong but I feel I should mention that the return to home din't seem to work. After pressing the home button on the controller the Disco began flying away from me. If anyone has had success with the home button, could you let me know please?

Using the Takeoff and Land button is super easy!
Taking the back seat and using autopilot is even easier!
    Have not tried FPV.

Shortly after packing up another bloke turned up with his RC plane (No auto anything, no camera/FPV). Looked like he knew what he was doing. Took off fine and did a few twists and turns. Probably 3 mins in to the flight it looked like he was deliberately doing a barrel roll… then the ground got in the way. Looked like a mechanical failure mid-flight.

    • Sounds like you had fun! Yeah - accidents do happen. Interference can be an issue with any radio…. Heck, I've even had a glider taken out by an angry magpie. Fortunately, as long as you can find the bits they are usually fixable.

With the home button - don't know as I don't have a Disco. Maybe check that it's running the current firmware? Cheers.

      • Firmware is not an issue in this case. Once the Disco or Skycontroller 2 are connected to your phone you are prompted to upgrade firmware.
I upgraded when given he opportunity. Now 1.4.1 (IIRC)

        From the Parrot community site:
"When Return Home is activated, Parrot Disco sets its altitude to 150 ft/50 m (default altitude) and heads for the starting position. Once there, Parrot Disco orbits overhead in a 180 ft/60 m-diameter circle at the same altitude."

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Guess I'll try it again next time and see what happens?

          I also noted
"When you activate RTH, the software systematically determines which of the following data is available before directing the drone to execute a return flight.
          1. The position of the drone at the moment of take-off, if GPS is connected when RTH is activated.
          2. The position of your controlling device (smartphone/tablet, Skycontroller), if Wi-Fi is connected when RTH is activated.
          3. If there is no GPS connection at take-off, the first available GPS fix after the drone is airborne."

Is it possible it was flying back to where it first got a GPS fix? Scenario:
The drone took off without a GPS fix initially. You flew it around for a while and eventually it got a fix some distance away from you. When you pressed the RTH button, the controller wasn't connected via WiFi so the Disco started to fly back to where it first got a GPS fix…..

        • @PlasticSpaceman:

Interesting. Perhaps that's what it was?
Either way, I'll give it another go before too long and take more notes to see where I might've gone wrong.

        • @0xFFFF: although I guess if using the skycontroller it would have to be connected to wifi when choosing RTH … I wonder how it works out location of the wifi controller - assume by signal strength?

        • @PlasticSpaceman:
My understanding is that WiFi is only used as a transceiver.
If I'm in range and I press the Return To Home button, I think the drone is only interested in returning to what it considers to be the launch location or where it got its initial GPS lock (Not sure which exactly).

I'm seriously considering reading the manual.

        • @0xFFFF: Read the manual? The horror, the horror. ;-)

It's the bit that goes "The position of your controlling device (smartphone/tablet, Skycontroller), if Wi-Fi is connected when RTH is activated." that makes me curious. Sounds like it can use the WiFi signal somehow to locate where the controller is….. maybe uses location services? I guess as it turns it could even be smart enough to identify that using info fed back to it from the controller to triangulate…. probably assuming too much smarts though.

My biggest guess is that WiFi comms are prone to interference - but if it becomes a real issue, can always just use a normal control (https://community.parrot.com/t5/Disco-Knowledge-Base/Using-a…). Would have to learn how to fly though. ;-)

          @PlasticSpaceman:

Apologies. It was a bad joke. That will never happen again.
Rest assured that the manual is still in its plastic wrapping.
