Heat Beads Charcoal Briquettes 4kg $6 @ Woolworths

110

Missed out on the $5 / 4kg Hotshots deal at Bunnings due to procrastination, but Woolies currently have Charcoal Briquettes at half price. Couldn't say what the real difference is between this and original Heat Beads, but a quick Google shows favourable results. Supposedly made from wood as opposed to whatever they put in the OG Heat Beads.

  • so they are real Charcoal like wood form or they are still Heat Beads and burns like Charcoal?

  • Pretty sure these were $4.50 a couple of months ago. I bought 4 boxes (16 bags). Correction they were $6. The original Heatbeads were $4.50

    • What's your personal experience in using these vs regular Heat Beads or other briquette brands or charcoal?

      • +1

Honestly, don't see any difference in smell/taste in the green pack to the orange pack Heat beads. Although I really love the lump charcoal in the big 20KG packs.

I usually use heat beads and then scatter the lump charcoal over the beads. I only use heat beads as they will extinguish and can be re-used a second time and don't crumble light other brands.

Aren't these still dipped in kerosene?

They're not a patch on charcoal. we get 15kg bags for $20 at the local shops.

    • Only the Easy-lite ones have some sort of accelerant - none of their other lines do.

Been using the OG 'beads for a while (sawdust, coal dust with a starch binder) and the coconut shell ones recently, the OG ones do last longer but the charcoal ones seem hotter at the beginning of the cook.

    • Not having a go, just putting it out there for others. I've never these green Heat Beads but will be giving them a go at this price.

Depends what you're using them for. Lump charcoal definitely gives better results for grilling but Heat Beads are much easier to maintain for long cooks. Might just be my technique but for long cooks (over 10 hours) I've found Heat Beads burn slower and hence need less top ups (which is always a winner overnight). I barely notice a difference in flavour between lump and Heat Beads for the long cooks and there's normally some wood chunks in there for smoke that take over the flavour anyhow.

You're on to a winner if you can get Aussie hardwood for that price. Most of the time the cheap charcoal is mangrove from OS that doesn't have a great flavour.

  • Bought a bag to try this weekend. I've got a typical four burner hood bbq with a grill on one side, plate on the other. I'll line heat beads up on the platter under the grill and stick the flame on high to get them going, turn the flame off and cook with the beads. Not sure how these will go, fingers crossed!

    • You sound like a prime candidate for a charcoal bbq…do it…you know you want to ;)
