Who Cares about The Commonwealth Games?

I always cringe at the commonwealth games. It's like the Olympics' asthmatic cousin-in-law. None of the strongest sporting nations are there. It's like letting the weaker kids have a race between themselves to see who's the best of the rest. It's just sad and I can't imagine why anyone cares about it.

    • So, "intensely" then I take it.

        • -1

Not really, no. I was made to feel like a foreigner growing up here, so I don't have any strong cultural attachment.

        • @freakatronic: and suddenly it all becomes clear…..

  • +4

It keeps MKR off the telly. That alone would justify them. I haven't watched them at all though…….

  • +2

If anything the only one that is cringy is you. The Commonwealth games is a good international competition and frankly, athletes need more opportunities to compete at a high level. Id love to chin you. You are a weak little man.

    • And you, evidently, are a "big man" lol

      • haha pmsl

      • Certainly bigger than you will ever be. You don't need strength to carry a large chip on your shoulder.

  • lol

I think it's a waste just like the Olympics. I mean playing sports is great, but the fact that we call our athletes heroes, is beyond me.

Oh look our guy/girl can swim faster. What an inspiration, a legend, a true aussie battler. Please…

I could ramble on really., but on the positive, if it generates $$ for Australia or a particular state, in this case qld, then I'm fine with it. Also if it motivates the younger generation to play sports and get fit and health, that's another plus.

    Still boring though :p

    • Some of it is boring.

Sitting in Anna Meares Velodrome in the moments before the world record is about to be broken is definitely not boring.

  • +1

There’s been some world records broken, hardly best of the rest. This gives athletes an opportunity at competing at an international level, how many times would they get this each year? World champs and… not much else.

  • +1

I'm surprised Queensland hasn't brought back Lisa Curry doing the chicken dance poolside to complete the 'It's a knockout' look and feel.

    • +1

Lol it's a knockout. Tripping me straight back to '88

  • +3

The fact the Australia is currently on top of the medal tally basically tells you what a joke it is

    • -2

No, people like you are the joke. Most of us are proud of our Nation's achievements.

  • +1

Sure the level of competition is not what we see at the Olympics, but for many athletes this is one of the many international events that prepare them for the Olympics. OP is obviously not an athlete or has been involved at any standing in any of the sports featured here to fully appreciate this.

    • -1

Full disclosure - am not an athlete, have not competed at the international level.

  • +3

It’s just wonderful to see Prince Harry and Meaghan Markle here for the commonwealth games.

    Just wonderful!

    Vomit.

  • Did anyone catch the cringeworthy swimming where they attach microphones to the swimmers' parents in the crowd. Terrible stuff.

  • +2

I really enjoy watching the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics, Rugby World Cup, Soccer World Cup, the Cricket, Golf PGA, Surfing, NBL, Sumo, World Series Baseball and many other sports. These events bring countries and people together. Yay!!

  • I don't really mind but it's nice to see something different on where people are competing against each other and themselves.

There's no point besides winning but when has that stopped people before??

Also, Korea marched as one in the Winter Olympics so maybe it's more than just sport. It can be a celebration of humanity and nationality.

  • I care more about E-sports :p

  • com games are a waste of time and money, dont know why they still exist. Pointless crap

  • Does anyone remember the Brisbane commonwealth games at all? 2002? Any memorable moments? Only thing i remembered is how great Sydney 2000 oylmpics was.

    • Was it really? I can't remember any previous commonwealth games.

    • +1

Brisbane commonwealth games were in 1982.

The 2002 commonwealth games were in Manchester.

      • -2

I'm sure we had a commonwealth games in the 2000s… let me Google… wow we had held the event 5 times.. 2006 was Melbourne..lol kinda correct..

  • I care for when the end……..

  • +1

Can't believe any city would waste money hosting this crap….

Good to see these 2nd rate athletes funded by my taxes. :(

  • double post

  • +5

Surely the commbank games can't be the biggest sporting joke in oz atm.
That honour deserves to go to cricket australia. Imagine a game where people stand around all day, get paid top dollar to play and then have to cheat against a third world team because the mental pressure/retardation of a loss would kill them.
Sad when these pussies stop fingering their ipads and start talking about the mental health of players who cheat, like they were Afghan PTSD vets. Fkn joke.

    • Fire the whole fkn team. End of.

  • +1

Good poll, majority (87% rn) voting no is pretty interesting :>

Mens cycling scratch race tonight was genuinely spectacular.

  • esports pls

    • Thank you Lance Armstrong and Marion Jones… just to name a few Americans…

      • In case you hadn't noticed, America is not here either. It is not part of the Commonwealth.

        • It was just an example… smh

  • +2

It's almost offensive to athletes who train their whole lives to say this huge competition is worthless. Why should there only be 1 competition? That's an absolutely ridiculous thought.

    • Fair enough, there are people who like to compete. Maybe I gotta make a new survey called "Who cares about sports?"
I doubt it would be the landslide this one was though.

  • Womens weight lifting lot of hotties in that, tune in might change your mind :P

    • I'm in… Love chicks with big shoulders and six packs..I'm pumped!

  • +1

I really hope Australia doesn’t finish on top of the medal tally to shut all these unbearable commercial TV knobjockeys up about the whole implied Australian dominance. That is the one thing I cannot stand about Australian sporting culture - the arrogance.

  • +1

The weaker kids want to have some fun for themselves too.

    • +1

Alright, but why do we taxpayers have to foot the bill? People besides world champions are free to compete against each other. I don't wanna pay for it though.

      • +1

Our school had the foresight to build a brand new athletics track which we’ve leased (over the school holidays and beforehand) to an unnamed team to partly fund it’s construction. Years in the planning and leased to the highest bidder, we’’re left with a world class training facility for our kids. No cost to you there, but probably did cost an overseas govt body a pretty penny.

Also Movieworld built a new (overdue) soundstage to cater for the Boxing Table Tennis and Squash. It is the largest soundstage in the Southern Hemisphere and recently secured Dora the Explorer TV production (albeit at a 30% tax break), again at no cost to you.

Jobs jobs jobs. You do like a job don’t you F A ?

  • It would be more interesting if they added 20/20 cricket straight knockouts, even u-21 football give England a chance to win something. Occasionally even invite other strong nations in etc. It gives a chance for smaller cities who can never host the Olympic games to host.

  • Listening to the volleyball commentry last night made me realise its okay not to care about the Commonwealth games

  • +1

It's a good thing for Australia and specifically the Gold Coast. If sport isn't your thing then Festival 2018 is run at the same time. The Gold Coast is trying to lose it's daggy image with a more sophisticated arts and culture events. I also think it's a good opportunity for younger athletes to gain experience.

  • The commonwealth games are on?

    • See? You're being billed for something you didn't even know was happening.

  • +3

In an age of peace its easy to disregard events like this. Countries need excuses to get together and communicate. Its the same as human beings. We probably hate going to family birthday events, but its necessary to continue to foster relationships (in addition to other efforts). Case in point, North Korea and the winter olympics. It gave them the perfect opportunity to rejoin the international community and begin diplomatic relationship.

    • This. CG is a celebration of the “Commonwealth of Nations” by means of games. A diverse cohort of nations with similar values which adopted the Westminster democratic system. GC are a friendly alternative with its own set of benchmarks.

The Commonwealth represents a significant proportion of the world population and I for one am glad to belong where stability, security, freedom & individualism is enshrined in law, taken from the Magna Carta centuries ago and so I am waving my Tribes flag as high as I can.

      • Funny how you talk about freedom and individualism at the same time as Magna Carta and Westminster democratic system, all the while waving your Tribes flag high.
If you respected individualism you would not favor the Commonwealth of Nations and an exclusive gathering with entry requirements based on committal to a monarchy; a non-democratic classist regime.

The Magna Carta and derivatives are classist and not truly democratic. How could anyone repsect a Monarchy? How could anyone accept a caste system?
In Australia, adults are required to vote, even if none of the candidates are worthy. There is no true vote, only a limited and forced choice. Where is the "None of them" option?

Sure friendly sports is cool, but the context of the event needs to be taken into account.

        • +1

Mate, we live in the best country in the world governed by the best democratic system in the world = Utopia. Please name a better place.
          Long live the Queen.

Please please don’t tell me you can watch some of these events, (Paralympic swimming as an example) and not be touched by the sheer courage and human spirit that these people demonstrate. As I posted earlier I raised an able bodied world/Commonwealth/ etc. etc. champion, OBVIOUSLY I have a fairly biased view of what these events are about,, but if you are an adult with children and DON’T think that high profile sporting events like this should encourage your kids to get out and involved with physical activity then I’m going to suggest you should consider your suitability as a parent. Yep I bet you love your kids too but………..
It’s really quite easy once you get off your own arse.

    • +1

Regrettably some parents don't have the capacity, intelligence, education, or life experience to raise kids effectively. Sticking an electronic device in their hand and leaving them to amuse themselves is a far easier option that getting out of bed at 4.30 am every day to take your kid for daily training. We are already seeing the consequences, (a few on here even), but it will become much worse in the future.

  • If I was Olympic Team USA, I would secretly channel funds into the Commonwealth Games so that Australian cycling and swimming teams are overconfident brats when the Olympics come around. I'd sponsor Kiribati and Tuvulu to attend to get smashed by Australia, lulling them into a false sense of security and destructive hazing scandals. The Australian athletes would spend their time filming Swisse vitamin and Samsung cursed commercial campaigns and 60 minutes stories instead of training.

  • And yet, you haven’t qualified for this either.

  • I cringe at the money that gets spent on the games that's for sure.

  • Australian men's hurdler Hough just hit 9 out of 10 hurdles but is still through to the final. :)

    • Was that just personal best o better… A games record?

  • +1

    watching it today.
have seen mens 105kg weightlifting, womens beach volley ball, womens 400m, womens netball (eng Vs wales).

    really enjoying it

  • +1

Imagine how pissed you are going to be when you have to watch your own kids in a school sports carnival.

  • +2

I attended the Opening Ceremony which was an experience of a lifetime. The Smoking ceremony was absolutely electrifying. I have now watched several events and the swimming finals were outstanding, especially watching Bronte Campbell snatch victory in the relay.
I have also watched a number of para events and I find the achievements of people who are not fully able bodied incredibly inspiring.

  • I must have been living under a rock, but I had no idea Gold Coast was hosting this, till I saw the headline about the poor treatment of the Scotsman athlete.

  • I think that is just harsh.
There are plenty of countries who participate in it. All the commonwealth countries. It symbolizes something.
