Who Cares about The Commonwealth Games?

I always cringe at the commonwealth games. It's like the Olympics' asthmatic cousin-in-law. None of the strongest sporting nations are there. It's like letting the weaker kids have a race between themselves to see who's the best of the rest. It's just sad and I can't imagine why anyone cares about it.

What are your thoughts on the Asian Games, the Pan American Games, the African Games and the other regional competitions? I have no problem with them and the Commonwealth Games, they have their place.

Also the Commonwealth Games has Squash, something the Olympics doesn't have that it should.

    • +3

I never heard of the other games. Lol I guess I'm not sportsy at all.

    • +5

Wow I don't know that squash wasn't in the olympics, that's really interesting

      • +5

They remove that years ago. Shame.

        • +5

It really is a shame, probably my favourite sport to watch at the games, hope it comes back at the olympics.

Really fun sport to play, it's great fitness.

    • +1

Rugby Sevens are in the Commonwealth Games as well, but not in the Olympics.
There's probably a list of all the sports that's in the Comm Games and not Olympics somewhere.

I presume the whole event turns a profit (TV rights, tourism etc etc), otherwise it would be cancelled indefinitely (check out the Goodwill Games).

      • +2

Rugby sevens is in the Olympics, since 2016 anyway.

Netball is another sport that's in the Commonwealth Games but not the Olympics but only Commonwealth countries seem to play it.

I just mentioned Squash because it is sport that I'd think fits these events.

        • +3

Oh oops (about my Rugby Sevens comment).
          I guess I still live in a pre-2016 era…

        • +4

@Deridas: yea & Fiji won it. So proud, our first ever gold medal.

    • The Commonwealth Games are not regional. Only England and its colonies can participate.

      • +1

You can join the Commonwealth even if your country was never an English colony.

But my point was there are many multi-sport events and each one has their place (or they would end up not existing), they don't have to all be the Olympics with all the best athletes in the world.

        • +1

True. You only have to be a colony of one of Englands colonies.(Or protectorate(colony))
There needs to be a constitutional link to England.

        • @adammetalman:

Did Mozambique ever have any connection? They were allowed in.

        • @sss333:

Mozambique was admitted politically as a "pay off" for some support of England/Commonwealth activities. A one-off instance. The requirements for inclusion changed because of Mozambique's inclusion. Under the current rules, there needs to be a link to England.

    Ignorant post.

"I don't have an interest / know anything about it so what's the point?"

    • +69

Now that I think about it, you've got a point. But like toothpaste spewing forth from its tube cannot be returned, my survey is now posted and it can't be unposted.

      • +36

You pay for your own internet connection, the commonwealth games is paid by your taxes. I think you have a valid point. It would be great is everyone;s taxes paid for all of our hobbies/passions.

        • If I had the choice about taxes though…

        • +3

@freakatronic: If any of us did.. :)

        • +8

@EightImmortals: If I was supreme leader there would be very radical changes in Australia, and the world, I would also be very blunt and straight to the point, and a lot of politicians would be worried about lot more than there jobs!

        • +3

@Wystri Warrick: We should start a club. :)

        • +3

          @EightImmortals
We are half way there. The ozbargain political party. We chip in a few dollars we have saved by using this site and make policy decisions by poll. Perfect if you ask me.:

        • @DarwinBoy: We could just pool and vote to lobby (bribe) politicians for our own oz bargain ends

        • +1

          @Wystri Warrick:
If we had a supreme leader there would be NO politicians at all no state gov nothing.
No massive bludgers getting ridiculous superannuation plus huge salaries without any accountability
no one excepting supreme leader ?

        • @freakatronic:

          Are you ineligible to vote?

        • @tromboc: No, why?

        • @freakatronic:

If I had the choice about taxes though…

        • I'm passionate about how the government wastes $billions by cancelling major infrastructure projects, our taxes pay for that…. But it's not great

        • @OzzyOzbourne: You better not read this then.

          https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/national/2016/02/12/governme…

And it doesn't even include the 8 BILLION they gave to failed European banks after the 2008 crisis or the millions given to the dodgy Clinton foundation….

    • +18

I consider myself 'sporty' yet I have close to zero care-factor about the Commonwealth Games.

I can get how regional titles for individual sports kinda make sense and would be relevant to people directly involved, but for people like me, someone winning a commonwealth medal is akin to people declaring stuff the biggest/fastest/best-est "in the southern hemisphere". Can't help it… just instills a overwhelming degree of meh.

      • This! I'm the tallest guy in my office. And whoooo caaaaaares.

        • +1

          I'm the fattest!

        • +4

@lddv04: Then as far as I'm concerned you're a winner too, pal.

      • +2

Yeah me too. I wonder if the way i feel about the commgames is the way the US feels about olympic games? Like, when you win 50 gold medals etc, who really cares? It just feels like we're bashing up on smaller/poorer countries so not really a fan tbh

        • +4

Seems like to me CG is even cringier in that knowing we can't win much in the actual Olympic games, we compete in the handicapped, washed up, no-one-cares Olympic games instead to feel like a winner

      • Comm Games Gold Medalist: "I'm in the best in 71 countries at this event."
        bobbieb: "Meh."

Either you're an Olympic athelete, or just… meh.

        • True.

I guess my point was that at the sport specific world titles, or the Olympics, there's a reasonable expectation that the competition has a reasonable turnout of the best in each field.

For the Commonwealth Games however, that simply doesn't apply in most cases. You just have to compare the Aussie swimming team's results from Rio 2016 with our current Comm Games tally.

So, for me personally… meh. The in terms of interest level, Commonwealth Games attracts me less than the so called Rugby League 'World Cup' - at least with the footy, there's some attraction in seeing how the code is developing in other regions.

          Edit: fixed links.

  • +33

To be honest, I don't care about the Commonwealth Games, don't care about the Olympic games either. It's as though we are led to believe that sporting events are any measure of a nations prowess on the global stage. We all know and socially accept that the true measure of a nations prowess is how many fake wars they can run overseas concurrently and how much debt they can accumulate for "defense force" spending as a result. The USA has been winning this race for about 200 years.

    • +4

Good point but to be fair to the US (not that they deserve it), it's only been about 70 years the world has suffered their imperial ambition.

      Edit - maths hard

      • +2

True true, It's hard to decipher who has been on top for the last 200 the lines are blurred. The British? French? US? But; https://freakonometrics.hypotheses.org/50473

      • +5

Nope closer to 200. They attacked Japan back in the 1800's and the Philippines around the same time as well as many other military and non-military incursions into other countries. My internet connection is pretty flaky ATM so you'll have to look up the info yourself. :)

        • +1

Thanks! This post is turning out way better than I thought it would!

        • +7

Yes you are right, its been more around 200 years Remember the Alamo, Rough Riders in Cuba etc .

          However with Imperial Ambitions
the Brits have also had their share
          Likewise the Russians
          The Chinese,
          Japanese
          Mongols
          Ottomans
          Vikings
          Germans
          French
          Romans
          Greeks
          Aztecs

          and many many more

        • +2

          @RockyRaccoon: Yep, no arguments there.

        • @RockyRaccoon: Spot on Rocky.

        • @RockyRaccoon:

This is starting to look like a game of Civilization!

    • If sport is not a measure of Australia's prowess, then what else have we got?

  • +24

I don't care about the commonwealth games but I certainly don't "cringe" about it.

This post on the other hand…

  • +12

If you don't care about the Commonwealth games then why make a post about it?

    • +16

It is all over mainstream TV and gets a bit annoying. Especially if it means a show you were looking forward to is now cancelled.

      • +14

Not only that, i live in Brisbane and even here we are making alternative work/travel/shopping arrangements cos it's a massive inconvenience. Kinda hard to ignore.

        • +1

And you have to feel sorry for anyone who lives on the Gold Coast also.

These events cause chaos for little economic return.

      • +1

Lucky I don't watch TV then.

      • MKR.

        • There's your problem right there, you're watching free-to-air TV in 2018.

      • +1

Having suffered through SD footy in regional Victoria last year, we finally got HD Channel 7 this year. The Commonwealth Games has demoted footy back to SD on Seven Mate :-(

    • -1

I heard it was back on today and I'm like "Why?"

    • +4

He has nothing else to do. Boring man. Feels smart on his high chair, laughing at the common people who take the commonwealth games for what it is:
a decent and rather prestigious international sporting event which caters for some sports that the olympics doesnt cover. Whats wrong with more competitions for professional athletes?

You can be indifferent to it for sure but he is just attention mongering. What makes me frustrated is that he smugly belittles the competition and with it all the world class and hard working athletes that compete for it.

I utterly despise little men like that

      • Lol I made a survey that ended up being popular. I didn't make it popular; all I did was post it. It seems a lot of others share my indifference toward our "world class competition". I can't help the way you feel about that.

    • Because of the cost out of my taxes that may never be recovered?

  • +17

I don't. However my brother lives on the Gold Coast and runs a hospitality related business. Commonwealth Games = more customers driving up the price so it could be a good thing for him.

    • +2

      I love you scotty =D

    • Actually in 'ghost town' Gold Coast a lot of businesses are also losing customers because of the games:
      http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-08/commonwealth-games-…

      • It's more like a lot of businesses didn't get the hyped foot traffic. What do you expect when you are a boutique footwear store during the game?

On the other hand if you are in hospitality & tourism in the centre of the action, it's a bit different.

        • Cafes and restaurants close to Commonwealth Games venue hubs are doing well, for example across from the Beach Volleyball at Cooloongatta.

There are exceptions but outside these areas (majority of the Gold Coast) it has generally been disappointing and a loss for many businesses, including cafes, restaurants and bars. Catering and accommodation providers are doing well, as are some tourist operators.

It's certainly not what the organisers sold to the people of the Gold Coast for having to put up with the inconvenience.

Being in hospitality in the centre of the action is no guarantee either, for example the nightclubs in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach are dead.

It shits me - olympic games wannabe; they even had a baton relay

  • If Meghan Markle is in the strip poker event then YES i will watch

    • Who is Meghan Markle ?

      • +2

Just another gold digger…. I mean gold medal digger

        Saved it

        • Its not like she doesnt have money on her own. She just doesnt have a lot of money. Probably more than me though.

  • +4

The sooner we become a republic the better.

    • +2

Actually scratch that. We could be a self respecting republic and still remain in the Commonwealth.

      https://independentaustralia.net/australia/australia-display…

    • Doh

    • +1

There's no way even an Australian republic will pass up the opportunity to continue inferiority complex driven chest beating over medals won at the comm games. Our massively funded and resources sports program beat Malaysia, Jersey and Barbados!!!

  • I watch MMA.

The Olympic and Commonwealth games are a thing where non-sports fans pretend they're interested in boring sports that they don't watch any other time. Presumably to share patriotic feelings with the other boring sports non-fans and to be told Milo and Nutrigrain are the reason that the athletes are competing where they are.

    • It's the only time anyone watches Handball or Curling, so its got some interest value.

    • +12

Same could be said about MMA

      • +4

Yeah they watch MMA and are having a go at the games. Lol.

      • It's Miller time…

    • +4

MMA which declared Ronda Rousey as "the worlds most dominant sportsperson". Stories on her in the news every day. Then she got her arse kicked. Twice

  • +2

Ever since they dropped synchronized skeet diving the Commonwealth games have not been the same.

    • +3

Team Skeet has never been the same since

  • +3

You gotta love the female boxing event where you are guaranteed at least bronze just by registering.
