Honestly for that price, I would pay extra for the Samsung S8 or S9.

??? lol for $578, you'd rather pay $1199 aka double the price for an S9?…tbh i don't think the kind of person who would purchase an S7 (which is a solid phone) would be in the market for an S8 or S9 for them to even be in the same conversation.

    • +1

how much extra is an S8, or S9 ?

  • +2

Still $799 at jb ? Can't believe that

    • +2

Can you believe its the same company too ?

  • How low will the S7 go? I mean will it continue to get lower and lower or will they just run out of stock once it gets to the $400 mark or so?

I'm just trying to understand the typical price of premium phones as they get older.

There's no way i'm going to buy a premium phone at full price, given they're now $1,000 + . Crazy money for me for a phone.

But it would be handy if the premiums fell to $300 or so a couple of years later, as they used to. Not sure if that still happens, it doesn't look like it does so much.

    • just before Christmas it went down to this same price…i think these guys, JB and Officeworks all jumped onto the train, from there i thought the price would drop further, but then it went back to 799 until now.

    • Just look up S4/5/6 now and you will more or less see the future of the S7 for next few years.

I waiting to see how 2018 Nokia 6 and Nokia 7 plus will do with their stock Android.

      • Yeah i'd like to look up S4/5/6 but don't know how to - i've not tracked their trend

I'm pretty sure I saw S6 on JB recently, can't find it now, and I think it was around the $550 mark or so - i remember being dissapointed as to how high it was.

I remember seeing the S3 for $350ish for a short while and then never saw it sold again.

I'd like to be able to buy an older premium phone for $300ish, but it looks to me that maybe that doesn't tend to happen. And if it doesn't then I'll probably end up getting a Chinese phone for a lower cost.

I really don't need a demanding smart phone at all - an S4 would be perfectly good specs for me probably.

        • Don't buy an S6 now (unless your very tech savvy). There will be no more security updates for it; it's EOL.

        • For ~$300 get the Moto G5s+ or the Xiaomi Mi A1.

        • Yeah i'd like to look up S4/5/6 but don't know how to - i've not tracked their trend

Use the search button at the top right

        • @Ughhh: I did

    • the S5 got down to $399 as a killer deal on special, and then disappeared, do would be another year before the S7 is getting to the $400 mark.

      • Thanks.

So that's the general trend? I thought it was, just trying to confirm.

So it seems the premiums may or may not drop to $400ish, at which point they'll be about to disappear.

And I think it's fair to say that at any given time there will be "mid range" phones for around the $400 mark which will be roughly the same specs and overall quality as the ageing premium phones.

And at the same time under $400, maybe $250 or so will get a roughly equivalent Chinese imported phone

Is this basically right? Just trying to understand how the market works

        • LG drop their flagships within 9 months by 30%, 50% within 12-15 mths. Support for android updates stops after about 2 years with most phones, as a new version of android comes out every 12 mths…. so expect one major update for a 12 mth old phone.

If you are happy with hardware and to stay on whatever version you get, then ageing flagships are a bargain.

I still have an Axon 7 in a box as potential spare, it's due to get Oreo (9 mths old cost $400)
I have an LG V20 as my main phone, it's also due to get oreo (12 mths old cost $400).

Both phones have all Australian bands and were flagship phones less than 2 years ago.

        • @garage sale: Thanks for that

  • Does anyone thinks S8 Au Stock for $796 is a good deal ? Just curious…

    • Not really. You can get an S9 on ebay for about $930 at auction then use the 5% coupon. The upgrades to the strength of the metal and the latest gorilla glass is worth the difference alone.

This isn't a good deal either. I just got an S7 Edge that was used but looked brand new, for $380 on eBay with 5% coupon and 6 months warranty.

      • Do you get any warranty with auction stuff ?

        • You get the balance of manufacturer warranty, which is 24 months for Australian stock.

        • You gotta find the companies that do refurbs and offer their own warranty, unless you get something brand new like an S9.

I got mine from certified tech direct, really great condition, fast shipping.

      Link to S8 for $796?

      • Sorry no link deal . I got it from Mobileciti for $885 on sale 11% off then menaged to get %10 from Ebay ( even though max for that code was $300 after chatting with them they agreed to give me 10% on this item ) so at the end it came to $796 . But beware there were only few left .

        • I've seen that one . Warranty here is from seller most likely not Samsung since some of this sellers will mention in description that manufacturer warranty is expired but they offer theirs instead . How good is that I'm not sure to be honest .

I went to Samsung at Sydney (next to Myers) a few days ago. The Samsung person over the counter offered me Samsung S8 64GB RRP AUD 999.00, she can offer me AUD200 off (She calls it S8 Promotion), so I can get it for AUD799.

        • There is no official poster in the store about this "S8 Promotion"
        • I suspect the RRP of Samsung phones, especially older models is expected to pricedrop soon considering Newer Phones were recently released. Samsung S9, Huawei P20, etc…
        • Or it could be a "Staff Discount" -20% (or AUD200); trying to clear out older phone models. She is either trying to meet a Sales Quota for the month or possibly even trying to be nice; providing good customer service.
        • I checked gumtree.com.au, there are ppl selling Samsung S8 (brand new, Australian stock, sealed, still in box) for even lesser than AUD799…. (just make sure you ask for the receipt), check that its Australian stock (simply look at the back of the phone, it should have a triangle with a circle and a tick symbol)

No harm trying to ask them about their "S8 Promotion"

Not the cheapest, check on TTG eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/112640982842 - Use code PULL5 $554.16)

  • lmao horrible price

  • Wondering if this is really worth an upgrade from the S5? Seems to be running the same android version 6.0 Marshmallow.
32GB storage would be a step up from the 16GB on my S5 but I have a 16GB SD card installed anyway.
Are there many good extra features worth forking out the $578?

S7 is upgradable to version 7 nougat. It's probably going to be upgraded to Oreo, too. If you care about camera, you will love this. It's such an amazing camera compared to s5. I love Samsung Pay, too. It's just faster to access the app and no need to turn on and off the NFC. It's automatically on while tapping. I think it's better overall compared to Google Pay. The screen is great, too. You are losing infrared, removable battery which I think probably negligible compared to what you gain.

      • Oreo is definitely coming. S7 Edge Oreo ROM was already leaked from Vietnam, if you want to play around you can already get a custom ROM based on that one from XDA-developers.

    • I did it significantly better than the S5

    • My advice is just wait for the Nokia 7 plus, Aust release won't be too long now.

      • Only downside, it has a slower processor Snapdragon 660.

    • Well the camera and screen for a start. My wife has S5 and I have S7. S7 is better - but not $578 better.

  • -1

Rather buy a Xiaomi A1 or similar Chinese phone.

    • the S7 has all the Australian bands, the Xiaomi doesn't.

  • +2

Hate the new samsung's curved screen, so S7 still the only samsung I will use now.

    • +3

Same here, not looking forward to upgrading to the next phone if the current curved screen trend continues.

    • curved screens suck as far as I'm concerned, especially as I always use a phone case.

  • IF it was the edge would be worth it, much bigger battery, top phone

  • Any S8+ promotion?

  • search the deals, not sure if these were grey stock or local stock but i remember seeing S8 for about $800 and S9 will eventually be $999. be careful these phones will drop slowly over the months.

  • Same price now at JB and HN

    • +1

      Cheaper at officeworks now

      • Heres hoping there is another ebay 20% off sale, they participate and they dont jack the price up again……..

too much to wish for Im thinking……
