  • why not?

    • my senior colleague seems to be working day/night/weekends (by choice / out of the sense of responsibility, i guess ?? since it wasn't required by management and also no OT claim/allowance)

currently, i don't do work stuff outside of office hours. (i surf Ozb everyday during office hours though)

so, not sure if i'm over-thinking this or not .. (as in "expectation" ?)

        *cough cough
this is your boss speaking…"you what?"

  • Do you need/want to take your work home?
Will monitors/keyboard/mouse also be supplied, or are you working off 15 inches and a touchpad?
How many hours a day are you on it?

    • Do you need/want to take your work home?
      No.

      Will monitors/keyboard/mouse also be supplied?
      Yes.

How many hours a day are you on it?
Currently only during office hours at work. Coz i'm using desktop.

If you're not currently dragging your desktop into meetings then a laptop isn't going to do much for you.

        Keep the desktop.

  • If specs are not important, the only difference really is the monitor you will be using with it.

    • monitor will still be connected by dock

Spec wise , i don't think CPU matters but not sure about integrated graphics on BIMs stuff

i guess they're similar, current desktop Intel HD 530, laptop will have Intel HD 620.

Why not? Its small, light and convenient and means you can have the occasional work from home day if a tradie is coming over or you need to do something. Just make sure they give you a monitor, keyboard and mouse for office use.

    • Good point, never thought of this. Thanks!

    • This. Also if you feel a little sick and are coughing but can still do work and dial into meetings.

Means you aren’t THAT person sniffing and coughing the entire meeting.

      • but can still do work

Yeah mate I know it's your day off but I need to up the TPS report by lunchtime cheers mate see ya.

        • If I’ve taken a sick day my work phone is off. If I’m just coughing but feel fine then I’ll hapily work at home.

  • It’s fine

    • Phone?

      • Ring ring

          yummy

  • whats the likelihood in your profession that you'll need to work after hours/weekends?

  • Really depends on your role.

You've had a desktop up to now, so I assume you generally don't need to take work home. If that's the case, the only real upside I can see is that you'll be more mobile around the office with a laptop - very useful if you attend a lot of meetings.

If you think that there's going to be an expectation that you take the laptop home and continue with your work at home, ditch the whole laptop idea.

  • A lot of workplaces are ditching desktops completely with all staff provided with laptops. This allows for a more mobile workforce who can still be productive when not at their desks. In our office, we don't have a single desktop.

If you feel that there is an expectation to take work home, just be upfront about it with management and leave your laptop locked to the docking station at work - you don't have to take the laptop home as long as it can be secured in the workplace.

  • Hell no. The expectation then results in working from home and outside hours.

    • Working from home can mean, working from home and not going to work that day.

      • Yes but on the flipside it means you take it home with you. You go home everyday, but not everyday you work from home. The expectation is now you can work from home.

Yes. Then leave it at work.

  • I can work from home with my laptop whereas not available before.

    I have Lenovo Carbon x1

  • I'm the public servant that is given a laptop that has never left my desk.
Makes me look more important than the person in the next room with a desktop.

  • Only if I am not required to use Windows and it isn't locked down, i.e. I can install what I want and have full administrator rights. Otherwise, it is not connecting to my home network.

  • Carting a laptop to and from work is a pain. Does your work offer any other remote solutions such as Citrix?
I have a laptop at work and never take it home, even though I work from home a lot. Why would I bring a computer home if I already have my own computer at home?

The only time my laptop leaves my desk is to take it to the occasional meeting.

Hard to say really…… Do you need a laptop? Do you take your work home or need to work away from your desk?

If any of those answers is a yes, then get one.

Otherwise No, desktops are normally 'faster' than a laptop.

  • Being able to take my computer to a meeting and actually use information from it rather than being stuck in the dark ages with a pen and paper would be so helpful. I am pro laptop.
