NBN - 100/40 (500GB) VS 50/20 (Unlimited)

Per the recent Aussie Broadband post.
Basically, I live with 3 others and we are currently on Aussie's 100/40 plan. Here is a little about us, one person watches a little netflix, the other is rarely home and the other games on a ps4 semi-regularly). I am the biggest user of data as I have recently purchased a gaming PC. Due to the recent purchase, I have burnt through 250GB in 10 days. I have one main question. 1. Would 50/20 suffice in allowing me to be able to play video games online smoothly whilst others are connected?

Some more info. I have FTTP connection and the provider is fantastic, I have been getting a steady 100/40 (lowest drop even during peak times is 97/33) so I believe them when they say I will drop no lower than 45/15.

Do you think this speed would suffice?

We have cut our current netflix settings down to medium as it was burning through our 500gb too quickly.

Thanks in advance!

Yes. Was on 50/20 before and generally speaking downloads don't cause much issues for gaming, but if you have someone at home who is uploading a lot and saturating / hitting the 20mb upload speed threshold then you might experience some lag.

To prevent that happening you can of course, tweak your router to give more / less priority to a specific MAC or IP address.

Almost all games transmit very little data so the bandwidth is more than adequate.

But game data needs to be transmitted immediately before other traffic so latency is as low as possible.

On high speed internet it's important that router speed (meaning CPU) is powerful enough to handle traffic and that game data is transmitted before everything else. You can do this using a router feature called QoS (Quality of Service). On many high end consumer routers such as Netgear's or Asus QoS can be handled automatically so game data is highest priority.

Netflix will not be interrupted at all by being lower priority than games.

    100/40 (500GB) is fine ;) ;)

  • You'll be fine. If you were a family of 5 all with heavy gaming and streaming needs, then you would consider 100/40.

  • Get 100/40 unlimited. I am with Telstra and have 100/40 unlimited and only pay $79pm.

    • how did you get that deal? They wanted me to sign up on a $79 with 20/5 for 500GB ….

Telstra have been upgrading existing customers for free. My 50 down became a 100 down with unlimited.

        • thanks, I'll try to haggle the price down, my current ADSL contract will expire in Jan next year so been looking around for a good NBN FTTN plan.

The cheapest plan I see with Telstra unlimited is $99/month on a 24 month contract with NBN 50 tier evening speeds

You can negotiate a $20pm discount. They quote the evening speeds to protect themselves after the recent ACCC ruling. I get max/near to max most of the time.

        • Thanks for explaining it, that's rather nice :O

If the price is a concern I'd say opt for the 50/20 unlimited plan, as it's definitely not worth the headache of worrying about quota management in this era of the internet.

If the speed is not enough then you could shop around for faster but unlimited/higher quota plans such as Telecube or TPG.

    • telecube not unlimited

      • My apologies, I probably should have switched that around Unlimited -> TPG and High Quota -> Telecube.

  • Do you think this speed would suffice?

It'll be fine….. basically, its only 2 people using it, you and the netflix watcher.

  • Me and my roommate game together just fine on 12/1 unlimited ACN.

I play mobile games and download a lot of stuff and Netflix.

He xbox one s console games and does the occasional YouTube and twitch/mixer upload stream.

It's all about the quality of the connection imho and not the speed or even quota unless you download a lot.

My parents place have FTTP I think 50/20 unlimited on Optus and the connection is shitty.. about to replace the router soon or bridge a new one to some dead spots and see if it fixes some gaming lag and constant dropouts.

I'll be downloading at like 3.8 megabytes per second then all of a sudden drop back to zero.. due to signal losses and probably a weak router.

Hers to hoping it's not infrastructure or line related because then rip more hassle involved ringing up the ISP or God forbid NBNco.
