I'm one of those intolerable people who uses cheap knives and even worse puts them in the dishwasher. I still have a cooks knife I bought from Woolworths Metro for $5 in 2004 going strong sharpened every now and then with the Kleva Sharp knife sharpener. I'm going through a vegetable phase at the moment, so doing lots of chopping - I thought it was worth a go for $1.50 (the environment may disagree). Will report back after chopping +- fingers.

Santoku is a great shape blade and thin steel for fruit and veg. This style of knife is one of my favorites

I have a $5 knife I bought from Woolys several years ago that is still going strong too, it stacks up against my $150 knives. I keep trying out Woolys knives trying to repeat this epic buy, but alas, I have never succeeded.

My go-to brand for knives is kiwi brand- normally found in most asian grocers. Very affordable and does the job right.

        • I've got a 'Kiwi brand made in Thailand' knife and its awesome. Cost about $3 from an Asian grocery shop. Been using it every day for a couple of years.

    • Ive been a chef for 22 years and bought these last night.
      Very sturdy and really comfortable.

But you also shouldn't take it on the train or bus to work… what to do!

Needed another Santoku blade .. my first one was a IGA promotion cheapie but has been fantastic and has gotten so much use over the past 4-5 years and still going strong, so bought a couple more as the price was certainly right (and these are a touch larger than the one I have been using).

Best bit was they were still marked at $6 each, down from $8 (so there was some stock left thankfully), but still scanned at the correct price..

Why does it say half price? I know I went to a public school but surely my math isn’t that bad!

    • Normally it says 1/2 price or better.

  • I bought these for my dads birthday. I could have saved a fortune if I'd known about this deal

Same for M5 owner, realising WRX would have saved a fortune.

  • Get yourself a $20 knife from IKEA and save yourself from wrist surgery later in life. They’re really good, almost as good as Global knives except they are less stainless and will rust a little more.

    • Using average at best knives won't cause you an RSI on your wrist as much as having a Porn addiction will.

  • Really not digging that handle :/ I think i will get something else that feels better in the hand

my local Woolies have them on sale for $4.20 but scanned $1.50 at the checkout.

  • Still plenty of stock at Mortdale. Scans at 1.50

  • Got the Santoku knife. Handle is a bit thick. Was easy to sharpen it to a very sharp edge. Knives which sharpen very easily usually mean that the steel is softer and therefore will dull quicker. Will see how it goes. I subscribe to the "buy an average knife but get an excellent sharpener" camp.

  • Picked up 2 santoku and 1 cook+utility (all the local had left!). For the price outstanding. Price withstanding - lower quality than wiltshire but good enough. Still got a wiltshire block set from good guys deal for when i move into a new place by myself, but these woolies ones will do well for now AND I don't have to give a shit about putting them in the dishwasher. Good deal imo OP.
