Information of Freight Forwarders / Short Term Storage of 40 Foot Container

Folks - I'm looking at getting some furniture including dining table set, couch sets, bedding sets, etc from Malaysia as my parents are based there. Has anyone personally got a container load across particularly from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne before? If so, would love to hear from you along with any contact details you may have for freight forwarders as well as fumigation agents from there and clearing agents from Melbourne.

I'm also looking for a short term location to offload the 40 foot container closer to the Moorabbin / Cheltenham area for approx 2-3 days. Intention is to get the clearing agent to deliver the container at this location and then get some local removalist to unload the items and move into our home in Cheltenham.

Any pointers / contacts / suggestions will be most appreciated.

Cheers'
Nish

  • Is it really necessary to get furniture shipped from overseas? It is a lot of hassle and potentially high cost.

    • Thanks for your quick reply and it's basically my parents are looking at gifting some of these furniture.
Moreover, the quality of these product is much better compared to what we can get here and the price is far more reasonable; even after factoring the cost of shipping it across.

      • Try Asian Tigers. They are pretty good. But I think the cost will be very high for the items you are looking to send over. They will handle all the pickup, clearance, delivery to your AU home directly and other stuff, you just need to pay $$$$$.

  • Can the store not organise this for you? My family has done it a couple of times from Italy/UK and everything was organised through the furniture store and the courier.

As for unloading, I don't think you'll have much luck with them taking the container to your house. It'll be unloaded at the docks, put into a truck and delivered. Then the container will be loaded and shipped off again.

    • Depending on your state and council there is generally restrictions of containers being delivered to residential addresses.

    • Agreed that it's easiest for getting one store to organise this but as we are getting products from various suppliers - this is something we will have to organise on our own by getting a bonded warehouse in Port Kelang (KL). Then get a freight forwarding agent to send it across to Melbourne before organising clearing agents from this end.

As for unloading, yes we can't get it to our residential area but will look for alternative location like a warehouse parking / loading area that I can get access for 3-4 days to get container delivered. Then during that period, I will get local removalist to unpack and deliver to our place in trucks before empty container is removed.

      • I don’t think you’re going about this the right way… I don’t know how much furniture you have but are you really going to fill an entire container ? Also why do you need a warehouse in KL? Get a quote from a freight forwarder from KL to Melbourne and have the furniture store send the items to them. The quote a freight forwarder will give you will include any custom fees, duty and delivery to your house.

Whoever you rent the container from won’t be that keen to have it just sitting there. You’ll also be paying rent on the container and on a place to put it or your stuff per day.

By all means get 2 sets of quotes but I don’t think your idea is going to save you any money.
