Alternative to Fetch

Hi, apologies for what may be a simple question.

I currently have a fetch box through optus, (i got it as part of a deal for phone and EPL) the box costs me $5 a month and once the EPL is done, i would like to avoid the $5 fee.

What is the alternative to be able to still get catch up etc through the TV?

As i understand it, once i cancel the $5 from optus, they disable the box?

All we really want to be able to do, is use it for catch up.

Edit. as an extra question, could i buy something that will allow EPL to be played through it i mean legally supplied by Optus, just not paying the $5 monthly fee

Thanks

  • If you cancel your Fetch TV service with Optus, you will need to return your Fetch TV box.

    • Yes, thanks i understand that… what can i use in place of it for the catch up TV is what im trying to find out.
      Thanks

      • I was answering this question of yours:

As i understand it, once i cancel the $5 from optus, they disable the box?

I was "correcting your understanding" - it's not that they disable it, it's that you return it.

        • I understand that you were correcting his understanding.

        • Nope I cancelled Optus last Sept, they did't want it back. it worked until Jan, then it was disabled/bricked.

    • Did not know that lol. Took the 1TB out of the fetch box and have been using it as a storage device for my servers. About to cancel my plan soon too.

You could just buy yourself the Retail Fetch box from JB Hi Fi etc as that has no fixed monthly cost. You can opt in and out of the packages at will.

Or see if Optus will let you buy the device out? Might be cheaper.

    • Thanks yes, the fetch box at JB is about $150-$200.. i was looking to find if there was a cheaper alternative?

There might be other boxes out there that could handle Fetch with an app but I'm not aware of anything that does the job better.

Could buy it from JB with some discounted vouchers or wait for a sale might be able to get it closer to $100 mark for the Mini.

      • Cheaper or free??

        • cheaper.. its a legit EPL subscription with optus…just dont want to pay $5 a month when could buy outright for cheaper

        • @offal spokesman: unless you try ebay or gumtree for used fetch box perhaps

        • @chumlee:

Thanka, as i understand it, they deactivate the boxes once they are cancelled and then are unusable :(

  • Which Fetch TV box do you have? For the Mighty, I believe they charge you $250 if you do not return it, and that's a lot cheaper than a new one.

    • I have the Mini, if i return I currently pay $5 a month for it… if i buy an alternative..i will return the Optus mini

      • I think they charge $150 if you don't return the Mini, which I think is about the retail price.

The original Telstra TV will work for catch-up TV, but you need a Telstra ID, which you can get by buying a Telstra SIM card, or for free if you register on their web site (that's what I did).

The Telstra TV 2 is more or less the same as the original except that it has a free-to-air tuner. However, I'm pretty sure it's disabled unless you have a Telstra internet connection.

    • Awesome.. that sounds good thanks

      • I have two Telstra TV devices, the first one I paid the full $99 retail price for more than a year ago, but the second one I got for $60 on Gumtree, brand new in sealed box.

    • The original Telstra tv is no longer supported at all.

      • What do you mean by "not supported"? I know that at least some Telstra stores still have it for sale, and it still works perfectly.

Maybe you're thinking of the Telstra T-Box?

    • The latest Telstra TV box can be bought cheaply new on gumtree as I just got one brand new for $50

It does need to be activated with a Telstra ID but these are now done freely online.

      https://id.telstra.com.au/register

You do not need a bigpond internet service to use.

The "latest Telstra TV box" is the Telstra TV 2 with an RRP of $199. I think you're talking about the original Telstra TV, which has an RRP of $99.

I doubt you're going to be able to get a brand new Telstra TV 2 for $50, although since it's offered free with some Telstra internet plans, I guess it's possible if the seller doesn't know the price.

The TV 2 has a free-to-air tuner, the original Telstra TV does not. The tuner in the TV 2 does not work unless you have a Telstra internet connection. The startup screen on the Telstra TV doesn't show up unless you have a Telstra internet connection, but it's no great loss. Everything else works just fine on any internet connection.

I use my Android box with Kodi for catch up tv. People have made channel 7, 9 and 10 apps for it

  • Have you tried Feltch?

You are wanting cheaper than $5 a month?
    Really? 😳

    • Yes, have you been on Ozbargain before.

Actually, i would like to own it outright and not pay a monthly fee

Not sure if it does the same thing but I watch live TV through my apple tv, and can watch shows that have already been on, through the apps for each channel.

    Chromecast?

Any "Smart" TV will have the buttons to watch catch-up shows for free. Just hook TV up to your Wifi. Easiest option and free (plus cost of TV:)

    • Thanks, i dont need a new TV at the moment, so thats isnt the answer unfortunately.

Need a new Bluray player? Much better option if you are just after new Smart features. The apps on my Samsung TV are never updated (and are slowly getting removed over time), but my Samsung Bluray gets all the new stuff.

Why replace a $3000+ TV when you could replace a < $200 device?
