local sim at airport + whatsapp

  • Buy a cheap SIM there and let home base know the number. If it's work they can afford to pay to call you.

  • Can you use skype, Facebook messenger, what's app etc

    • I can use all of them… but others.. e.g. my mum will be out of reach… can Skype forward calls to my AU mobile to Skype account?

      thanks mate

      • Using Skype you can access pay-as-you-go rates to call any phones. Or buy a subscription. Rates are here

  • Download whatsapp or viber to your phone, use wifi at the hotel or wherever you are and call people that way for free.

    • thanks mate! newbie to vibe etc… can i use them calling AU home or mobile numbers?

      • If you wanted to do that you need to use Skype and buy some calling credits and then use that over wifi.

Otherwise make sure who you are calling has whatsapp or viber on their phones and it won't cost anything.

        • seems that is the best option… thanks mate

  • Another option is to use VOIP and a SIP app on your phone.
I'm out of touch with VOIP providers, but I have roamed with Pennytel & mynetfone, and people can call me via an access number (local Aus call for them), and I can make calls out to Australian numbers just by dialling them normally.
Was blooy handy during a recent overseas trip when I had to make MANY calls back to Aus to sort out issues to do with credit cards/travel insurance/etc.
All for a few cents per minute.

Hopefully someone can recommend a VOIP provider.

      2girls1…. Oh wait a second…

  • I have found Skype pretty good for my travel needs. I pay the tiny yearly fee for an Aussie Skype phone number and forward my local number to it while I'm away.

Skype out to call Australia numbers from abroad is pretty cheap too. A small topup before you leave will take you a long way.

Just switch off for 10 days and enjoy your holiday, everything will still be here when you get back. Seems like you'll be busy enough with going to 2 countries and visiting family in only 10 days.

    • This. A million times this.
