Please Recommend a Powerbank with "Always on" Mode

I'm looking for a 10000+ mAh powerbank with "always on" feature. I do have a Xiaomi one with "double-press-power-button" 2 hours charge mode, but I need it to go beyond 2 hrs. Basically, it should stay on until turned off or till the battery is nearly drained, regardless of the load presence. Can someone recommend a product like this? I wouldn't mind a generic DIY case if it has that mode.

  • I think the newer xiaomi powerbanks auto charge once something is plugged in. That could be a solution

    • They do until the phone etc is fully charged (or for 2hrs in double-click mode). Then they shut down and don't turn back on automatically, at least I can confirm this for Mi Powerbank 2 10000/20000 mAh models.

    • But they don't stay on.

My older Xiaomi does this, it'll come on when I initial plug in something like Bluetooth earphones, but won't stay on as they don't draw enough current.

I don't know why they do this, the power wasted in standby would be trivial by comparison to the capacity. I never noticed my smaller units 'go flat' simply sitting on the shelf.

The Ruinovo powerbank enclosure that I bought years ago from Fasttech seems to do this — it'll continue to charge my smartwatch even though the watch battery is already at 100%. It will continue to power a device that draws power until the powerbank's batteries run down.

    • Ta! Sadly all Ruinovo are listed as sold out or discontinued on Fasttech. Will try to find elsewhere.

  • Why would you want a powerbank to do this ?

Because they switch off while charging low-draw stuff (like Bluetooth earphones). Or even worse they don't charge at all if you forget to press the button.

      • Xiaomi have power banks designed exactly for low draw devices. You can normally toggle it by tapping the power button a couple of times or something.

        • or something.

Why should I have to press a button?

And how an I supposed to know I'm supposed to press it? Power banks shouldn't need instructions. Plug crap in and it charges, how hard is that? The cheap dumb ones manage to it.

          Stupid idea.

        • @D C:

          Because you're not lazy?

To enter low power mode press the power check button twice, once done you will find the LED blinking in sequence which mean the PB is in low power charging mode perfect for fitness devices. This low power mode will be active for 2 hours after that the power bank will switch off. Usually low powered devices take less than 2 hours to charge.

        • @Clear: No, because you had no idea either;

You can normally toggle it by tapping the power button a couple of times or something.

…and you had to go and find the instructions.

And having skimmed over the instructions (like I'm reading that) how am I supposed to remember all that crap? You couldn't. Why should I?

          Once again, stupid idea.

And pointless, power drain in standby mode is bugger all. My cheap dumb ones don't go flat sitting around doing nothing.

          @D C:

Xiaomi 20k powerbanks includes a manual. It’s sensible to read the manual when operating new or unfamiliar equipment.

          new or unfamiliar equipment

A power bank? Give me a break.

Anyway, a power button that needs instructions is crap design (non-obvious hidden modes).

My bag of pegs came with instructions on the side. Then again it may have been directions to the Holy Grail, like I'm reading that.

On the other hand my 100W laser cutter came with none. How hard could it be, right?

You’re assuming that every consumer is as tech savvy as you. We’ve been asked many questions over years that makes us wonder sometimes.

You hand me a powerbank that requires me to press the power button in a special way in order to use 'low charge' mode so it'll charge my earphones and I'll have NFI that the mode even exists, or how to do it. Tech savvy my rear.

          Crap design.

I carry around a Xiaomi power bank, and also one of these: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1qn53RFXXXXXUXXXXq6xXFXXXm.jpg (under $2, takes an 18650) because the Xiaomi won't charge.

So I measured its standby current, and it's about 0.0025A. 2.5 microamps. Bugger all by most standards.

Given the cell in it is 2600mAH, 2600/0.0025 means it will take over a million hours to flatten the battery. That's 118 years in standby mode. (Yes yes not that simple but good enough.)

'Low power' mode should be called 'stupid mode'.

          Stupid design.

          Lol wut 118 years?

          0.0025 A = 2.5 mA (milliamps, not microamps)

          2600 mAH / 2.5 mA = 1040 H = 43 days.

          Do you even math?

        • @ronnknee:

          Do you even math?

Nah, pretty shithouse. Needs more zeros. I'm only a magnitude or three out, close enough.

          Try again, shall I?

Right, so I measured the standby current at 2.5 microamps as written, aka 0.0025 milliamps. So 2600/0.0025 is 1,040,000 hours, as before 118 years.

And Xiaomi are worried inactivity will flatten the battery.

          Stupid design.

Huh, my measurement is suspiciously close to what the (probable) datasheet says: http://dlnmh9ip6v2uc.cloudfront.net/datasheets/Prototyping/T…. Got 7-8 for the maximum before it dropped unlike their 6. Eh.

(You can take the neg off now. Or not, it's not like it matters.)

      Remote dash cam.

The cheap ones that have a single cell inside them all do this. You might need to carry one of those along with your usual power bank.

  • We’ve three xiaomi 20k powering dashcams. They stay on until spent.

  • I realise this post is nearing a year old, but to the OP. Did you see this option? https://www.voltaicsystems.com/always-on
