NetGear Arlo Pro 2 VMS4330P $863.20 Delivered @ Sydneytec eBay

210
PUMP20

After lots of researching and looking around, this is the best price I can find regarding the latest Arlo pro2 model. I've been looking for an all in one solution that's reliable as my xiaomi smart wifi cameras don't upload properly to the cloud anymore (using official mi home app :( )

Differences between the original pro and pro2 are:
720p vs 1080p recording
3 second pre motion recording (needs to be plugged in I think)
Continuous video recording (need subscription + plugged in)

  • Hey OP does it need monthly subscription ? Thanks. Probably needed for certain features but I am not clear on that.

    • From my research, it's free if you are happy with 7 days maximum storage of recorded videos.
If you want continuous 24/7 recording or longer than 7 days of cloud storage, you'll need the subscription.

      • Many thanks, just bought.

      • Can you storage to NAS?

        • You can plug a USB drive or hard drive to the hub and it will record to it even if internet is offline. You need to the plug it into a PC to view those recordings.

But personally don’t see the need to subscribe to anything more than the free account as I just want to see what’s happened in the last 7 days, and have a backup of all recordings in case I’m away or want to review footage from past.

Bought this 2 months, ago, it's amazing, BTW don't buy the official outdoor weatherproof cable, it's been recalled, fire hazard.

EDIT: Pro tip, download IFTTT if you have not (IF THIS THEN THAT) On android or iOS, so much more awesome on android cause you can make widgets to Arm and Disarm your arlo pros, also have it get up if it picks up motion, turn on certain lights with my philips hue.

    • Good idea with Hue. I use geofencing though for arm/disarm.

  • I believe the Pro 2 also allows you to define “activity zones” to detect movement, rather than the broad alerting where any movement is detected on the original Pro.

Again, this seems to only work when plugged in so the benefits aren’t much between them if you plan to rely on battery operation:

should be cheaper given its a subcription service with these

    • Will the arlo pro2 record continuously when plugged in to the solar panel?

Does have several unadvertised downsides vs the original Pro. Less consistent night vision is the big one. Poorer mic sensitivity (possibly a fixable firmware issue) and lack of redesigned camoflague skins (resulting in a conspicuous white ring) are a couple of others that come to mind.

If you use 2.4 GHz WiFi at home, be aware that Arlo creates its own separate 2.4 GHz network that intentionally seeks to set itself to the same channel as your existing one, which can have a negative impact on WiFi performance in some circumstances.

    • …was about to pull the trigger and found this: Arlo base station will likely cause serious degradation to your 2.4GHz wifi.

Now that's a serious deal breaker - very surprising a network company doesn't even know the basics. My guess is some half-baked developer decided to add this as a feature and probably got rewarded for it. For as long as the person/people are still employed at this company it will unlikely get fixed. Netgear Support also seems to stick with thier technical advice from their developer. Completely hopeless.

      Don't buy this guys!!

Pros and Cons of each after owning them:

    Arlo Pro 2:
~ Good for those who want ability to run wireless. Stick camera anywhere within wifi range and it records when motion is detected.
~ Has base station so you can sound alarm to freak out robberies in action
~ Drawback: seems to always log me out after viewing app for some time (e.g. I can't stream for hours). Apparently one of the cons of having free streaming service and there are a lot of complaints about this.

    Nest Cam:
~ Cons: Needs to be plugged in for power
~ Cons: I believe free streaming only records past 3 hours of activity.
~ You can get true 24/7 continuous recording with a monthly paid subscription
~ Cons: If you do 24/7 continuous recording, it uploads around 300GB of bandwidth PER MONTH, per camera! (you can change video quality to reduce this)
~ I can view my stream 24/7 without being timed out via app or on web.
~ Nest Cam Outdoor IQ has MASSIVE speaker volume for times when you want to chat to postie/scare intruders etc (compared to previous models and even IQ indoor which is louder than non-IQ models is no match for the IQ outdoor version).
~ IQ models have 4K sensor with auto zoom (it zooms in close on any motion — lot of crime goes unpunished because although footage is captured, robbers face can't be IDed properly.
~ IQ models only: Face recognition. I make it alert me when someone I don't know is at the door. It takes hundreds of facial photos automatically and builds a portfolio of people it knows.
~ IQ models: Has Google Assistant built it. I can control Phillips Hue, etc by just talking to the camera and getting voice feedback from Google.
~ Schedules: I can set schedules to make camera turn on/off at certain times of the day/week
~ Family pass: I can create logins/pass so other people in the family can login and check the streams without giving my main login details
~ It's a Google product. With massive data centers all over the world, I wouldn't be surprised if they have an Australian CDN soon so streams will be fast.
~ If you buy the Nest smoker detector, on the app you can see the smoke detector status as well as the current temperature of that room (where it's installed)
~ Can't get IQ outdoor in OZ yet, got mine from BHPhoto. Power is universal so it works in OZ (adapter says 28w. Input 100-240V ~ 50/60 Hz 0.65A.)
I find both good. I set Arlo for areas where cabling is an issue and I use Nest for everything else.

    • Nice comparison OP.

  • Did this vendor price jack? From memory they didn't seem to have. But just want to check with the OzB professionals. Thumbs-up and respect if they didn't.

    • They may have but even at the (pre-discount) price of $1079, it's below others such as Officeworks ($1098): https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/netgear-ar…

      • I've been keeping an eye on the price for sometimes now, it's always been at around $1,100 from various sellers.

    • +1

Don't think they price jacked, but I've been following Arlo Pro 2 for a while and SydneyTec has consistently higher prices than other eBay vendors (like DeviceDeal). They do however, participate in the common 20% off eBay sales which other vendors don't seem to do. They seemed to have reduced the RRP for the 2 and 3 camera systems to match other eBay vendors, therefore the deal listed here (2 or 3 camera pack) is about the cheapest you are going to get. For 4 or 5 camera packs, look elsewhere.

  • Only thing stopping me from adopting Arlo is no PoE for their outdoors camera. Their indoor one has PoE so not sure what is their excuse for not adding it to outdoors.
