7-Eleven Fuel App Update - Is The Party over?

7 11 app forced an update, basically said have to update and now it says fake locations is logged and account may be suspended.

Is the party finished?

If you don't have to update don't.

Here's the error on the latest version updated today.

    Nope.

    In short:

    • They're just scaring away the amateurs (aka non-professional OzBargainers).
    • If they blocked this properly, they'll cut off a large portion of their revenue stream.
    • In other words, it's actually in their best interests to offer this.

    My case:
I used to fuel up at Caltex Woolworths Petrol. Why?
    * I'd do my usual shopping at Woolworths, which inadvertently is >$30, which nets me a 4c/L voucher. Of course I paid my WW grocery bill usingn 5% off WISH eGift Cards.
    * I'd then go to Caltex Woolworths, when the price is low(ish), fill up, use the 4c/L voucher, and then pay that with a 5% off WISH eGift Card.
    * This is about the most stacking I could do.

With the 7/11 App and Mock Locations, I typically save 20c+ per litre. I couldn't do that with WW so I literally shifted all my fuel needs to 7/11. I encouraged family and friends too, so just by this one example they've increased their revenue by whatever amount. I never used to go to 7/11 before this.

      THIS^

I have the latest app version (1.5.1 on Android).

Works properly. If it doesn't work for you you're doing it wrong!

      • Just wait for your app timer to expire.

I've been doing this for over year so I think I know how to do this.

Just a matter of time before your app forces and update that's when you'll see the issues

        • The procedure may be different with the updated app.

I get the mock locations warning too, I have to quickly disable the mock locations and then open 7/11 before it locks on the proper location.

If I dont disable mock locations it doesn't work.

        • @thetrain:

See the warning screnshot in the original post about logging, and possible account suspension.

I can't be bothered, don't want to fight with them of they lockup my 150$

This is the change in the latest version of the app

        • @dealman:

As I've mentioned in the other thread, they anonymously log all "mock location detected" events using analytics but have no way of actually identifying you through these events. This has been present since at least August 2017. Nothing has changed in respect to this since the last update apart from changing the actual dialog message warning you about possible suspension to scare people.

        • @master131:

I'd have thought it'd be fairly easy to identify people based on the message since we're all logged in

        • @dealman: In theory yes, but in execution it's not happening.

    • This is dependent on whether people are situated in areas that are regularly screwed over with petrol prices though. For me after a quick scan of the country I can only get around 4c cheaper for 7-Eleven U98 than my local. So with WW 4c and 5% Wish I'm better off.

    • +1

Well actually they are better off without your "business" if they actually make a loss from the sale. We'd need to know what their profit margins are to make such statements.

      • +1

Agree - but nothing MathNerd said was wrong except to suggest it is "in their best interests to continue to allow this".

This would without a doubt increase revenue streams. Whether or not it increases their profts? As you say, different story and we would need to know real figures to be able to know this.

  • were you able to lock the price though (with the update)?

    • Yes you can lock but only on real location

      • How recent is this update?

My lock yesterday was fine …

Edit : latest version and I can still lock with different locations. Not sure what the fuss is about

        • I started the old app and it forced me to update with a message that basically made it impossible to use it.
Then when I updated it said fake GPS has been logged and account can be blocked blah blah

        • Which fake gps app do u use?

        • @RM:

          Fake GPS Free (Android)

        • @thetrain: doesnt work…the app version is 1.5.1 and i have tried 6/7 diff gps apps. everytime 7/11 app detects..

pls send me a screen shot of the app u use

        • @RM:

          Run the gps app.

Then you need to quickly disable spoof locations and load 7/11 app before it locks on true location.

        • @thetrain: thats how it was working earlier. but now whatever I try…even uninstall, doesn't work. tried different gps apps…even on my old phone…nothing works!

interestingly, have same version on wifey's phone and it works there…

am thinking are they tracking this to the google id used to set the phone up? my old and current phone were set up using the same ids…but wife's obviously is a diff id.

I have always used my phone to lock amount for both of us in the past…

        • @RM:

It is worrying that you can get it to work on one phone but not the other …

Hopefully it is not 7/11 starting to clamp down. For now I'll keep using it until it stops working

        • @thetrain: yeah me too….they will lose a major share if that happens…or get multiple ph with diff Google id's to use as long as possible …

  • Havent been able to logged in for 2 years on Virgin network+ Samsung phone. Would have thought that would have been an easy fix..

  • I locked in yesterday. Didn't notice any change in functionality

    • +2

      This is today

      • youre a good boy
        smart boy!

      • Thanks :P

My app is the latest version already so nothing has changed between today and yesterday

  • You can avoid the update prompt by setting the date on your phone back to the past… But then locking doesnt work

    • +1

Nonetheless, after the update I cant mock either :-(

      Goodbye 7/11

      • What is this update? I locked yesterday with a different location and it was fine?

        • The software has an expiry clock to force you to update.
          Maybe it's not a wall clock, but maybe it's a since-installation timer.

          Either way. Enjoy it
          . The end is near.

As for Jerry can bargains .. I think Bunnings are the cheapest

          • +1

@FoxJump: 1 year one from this post and we are still looking in prices.

        • @FoxJump: I'm already on the latest version (Android app 1.5.1).

          Still works :)

        • @thetrain:
          Gaaagh!
Well, on my Moto Z Play it is d.e.d

    • I guess I'm back to buying Jerry cans of fuel to avoid the cycle

  • +1

I know this will be an unpopular comment, but isn't this at a basic level fraudulent behaviour? You are dishonestly representing where you were (GPS lock) to obtain a benefit, namely a financial discount on fuel. That is a criminal offence, in Qld at least.

I'm interested to know if others see this differently.

    • +2

you're correct. I don't have an opinion on if I think its bad or not, it depends on if it is the 7-11 corporation eating the discount, or are they forcing franchisees to eat the discount.

      • Afaik it's the corp

        • +1

Agreed, if it was the franchisees that would make it worse.

      • 7/11 Franchises always get 2 cents/litre no matter what discount/credit is applied to the transaction. The head office pays for marketing and logistics. The franchise does pay a % for other items in the store though but they're reimbursed from head office if a coupon is used for that.

It is win win on both sides. 7 Eleven get money tied up and earning interest, plus keep you loyal to their stores where you might spend on coffee, food, smokes etc. It wouldn’t make any sense for them to patch this up. There’s nothing to feel bad about, the fuel industry is very unscrupulous and constantly ripping people off.

      • +1

I don't think 7-11 perceive it that way or they wouldn't keep making changes to the app about the GPS lock. I'm no fan of the way fuel companies operate and 7-11 seem to be the most competitive at the moment on pricing in my area, but if the community exploit a vulnerability then their ability to compete with the bigger players will be diminished.

BTW I appreciate you giving a written response as opposed to the 3 people that negged me for just for asking what people thought.

    • +1

It's a bit like exploiting vulnerable people for cheap labor.

    • +2

I don't have a strong opinion.. but do you use VPN to, as an example, gain access to a US Netflix catalogue?

Have you ever used VPN in China to be able to access Google?

Not justifying any of the above, but I would put all of these in the same bracket of dishonesty.

      • I personally haven't done any of those things, but I don't think it reaches the same level of deception or dishonesty because there is an argument about the level of financial detriment caused to someone. In the case of FB and Google, I can't see it financially impacting China, who in that case is the one being deceived because they have excluded those things for social reasons.

For the Netflix US catalogue, that is a much closer example. In my mind it depends on how this financially impacts the victim. I get your point and it is interesting about how people view these things.

        • +2

These are not for social reasons, they are for political and financial reasons.

  • 98 is 153.9 in sydney

    • -1

      Geelong 120

      • 98 is 140.9, while 91 is 122.9 @ Belmont/Geelong area

  • Doesn't work boys and girls.. Any workaround?

    • -1

      Doesn't seem like it

    • Teleportation.

  • I've tried running on rooted with xposed and root cloak, didn't work. Unless someone knows how to disable the supersu check.
Tried on bluestacks android emu, no luck.
Really hoping someone finds a work around, this has been my golden egg to ridiculous petrol prices. So sad without it.

    • Hmm you'd thibk this shouldn't be so hard on android. But surprisingly not working.

  • Have you tried any of the work arounds in the other thread.

I thought the same as you, but i got it to work using the uninstall method.

  • Works normally for me. To be on the safe side, should maybe stop storing credit on the account and just top up as required each time.

    • Yeah perhaps

Fully working on Nox android emulator with the inbuilt gps function. Do NOT use fakegps.

    • Hi Rainbowunicorn, did you have to do anything special with Nox to get it to work. I just tried using it and after setting my location using Nox and then opening the 7-11 app it still said I was using mock locations. —-Edit—- Nevermind, a reboot seems to fix it.

      • "have you tried turning it off and on again?"

Also you might have issues with topping up the account on nox, can get a lima error. Just top up your mobile device then lock in with NOX.

    • +1

NOX no longer works, its giving gold error when i log in my 7 eleven app, do you @rainbowunicorn have got any alternatives? Thanks

  • The app does work on my new Android 8.0 telephone something must have changed.

    • +1

      I assume you mean doesn't?

      • The hack doesn't the app does

        • Any workarounds so far?

      • Yep you are right, sorry about the typo.

  • Try this:

-Set location with fake gps. Dont open 711 app yet
    - Wait 4 seconds then stop fake gps location
    - wait another 4 seconds, open 711 and lock

    • I can confirm this works for me every time.

  • anyone else had their account locked out and ask to call up?

  • Struggling to get the hack to work for the last few days. It was working fine only last week and I didn't update anything.
    Anyone have same issue?

    • hmm what version of android you use? As far as I know, mock location is no longer working with android security patch after 01/03/2017, in this case you need to convert your fake gps app into a system app (google for instruction). If you need to root your phone, i recommend using magisk instead of supersu because it's systemless and can't be detected by other apps. fake gps apps nowadays usually come with features called 'stealth mode' allows you to rename and reinstall itself making even harder to detect. You don't need to touch the mock location in developer options at all. I don't use 7-11 but i just happen to know quite a bit about location spoofing, hope it helps

Anyone else having issues signing in on Nox? I'm now getting this error. Tried restarting it, everything else I can think of.

    NoxError

    • Yes, I'm experiencing the same issue. Have tried everything including changing IMEI and turning off location settings.

    • Mines not working either. Is their A new cracked version of 7/11 fuel app?

    • Yeah same :-( Not working for me… Hopefully someone works out how to fix this!

    • Yep, same Nox error here too.

I was getting popups for the last few weeks that said the 7/11 app would soon stop supporting the version of Android that Nox emulates (maybe Android O?) Maybe that has finally happened?

      • damn my nox not working too, anyone has found alternative?

  • Force me to update to 1.6.0 and won't detect jailbreak for ios9

  • I'm getting code "Golf" error when trying to log in from Nox. I can log in fine from my mobile so not sure whether they did something to stop people from logging in from Nox.

  • I'm getting the same error too

  • I'm also getting Error: Golf
If anyone finds an alternative/solution, please reply to this comment (:
    Thanks

    • Have you tried Bluestacks? It's still working for me.

  • Nope…not working now. Have 3 ids - all working on phone - none on Nox

  • the only solution now seems is having a friend in the other city…

  • hopefully someone comes up with a new "special" version of this app soon

  • https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/288802?page=56#comment-681… this works with v 1.7 from today's update (just tested it myself)

    • good find, can confirm it's working.
