  • Good deal. Any idea of how many locations exchange these things? I've never seen them around my area, and I'm about 7k's from the Elgas distribution centre.

Edit: Found their swap n go locator: http://www.elgas.com.au/custom_forms/sng_sites/locator.html

  • sorry forgot to paste this from there first page

Get a Free Upgrade to SWAP'n'GO GREEN!

Limited time offer available at participating BP, Woolworths &
    7-Eleven outlets.

so it appears you just need to find a location that sells them and mail in your reciept.
i will be out on the hunt tomorrow looking for one.

    • Free upgrade? This implies that it normally costs even more than a regular swap-n-go!

I paid over $35 for a swap-n-go this weekend (my 9kg tank was about to expire so swapped it for a newer one). How much more do they want for this green coloured one?

To compare, I also refilled my spare 9kg gas bottle for $22.

  • What does it then cost to swap the green bottle after the first promotional swap?

  • can those bottle be refilled?

    • yeah im wondering this too. I could be wrong but looks like a way to ensure ppl are swapping and not refilling.

    • Not sure if they can be refilled but they can be swapped for a full one. The catch is that they can only be swapped at an Elgas site - once you go green you are stuck with it.

    • From their website they say

Do I own the gas bottle I receive?
Yes, when you purchase or swap a gas bottle from us, you own the SWAP’n’GO gas bottle you receive. Also, you are free to choose swap or refill when it is empty.

      http://www.elgas.com.au/swapngo/swapngo-faq

Logically since they are connected to your BBQ by a standard fitting and refillers use the same fitting then it should be refillable. Also further down the FAQ they mention they supply some refillers the Gas

"Elgas is one of the largest suppliers of LPG to refillers and we support them as well as our SWAP'n'GO network. In fact, many of our independent customers have both SWAP'n'GO and Elgas refill gas."

      • Found someone had the issue with refill:

        http://caravanersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7902

        • Read that its a big confusing - they seem to have a number of issues

          1. Bottle size - it doesnt fit their existing carriers - guess that's an issue that it can bounce out of the carrier while driving
          2. Some caravans use a different fitting Swap N go are wont suit those with Primus valves
          3. Refilling - seems to be some concern with this in one or two posts but no one has followed up on that issue. The Elgas FAQs seems to indicate its ok to refill but its not explicit in saying it is.
        • +1

To be fair, that post was back in March. They were new then, and the issue has most likely been resolved by now. Best to do some research if you plan on travelling with these - for the 90% that are going to use it solely for bbq-ing, I'm tipping you'll have zero issues.

  • Just need to locate one which does it now.

  • How much for the SnG green bottle?

  • Interesting - the old steel bottles are 9kg. These new ones only seem to hold 8kg or 8.5kg. But they cost the same or more to swap? Hmmmm

    • a lot of steel ones are 8.5, mine is

    • Read the FAQ on their website, its to do with variations in bottle sizes, so by saying 8.5 it covers when a bottle maybe less than 9Kg. When its refilled by a SS its not completely accurate when they use the escaping vapour method to determine whether its full or not, so 8.5 covers the legalities

Also it appears there are 8.8KG and 9Kg bottles out there so again by saying 8.5 they are covering their butts in case someone gets 8.8 instead of 9KG

  • so if i take my old rusting 9 kg bottle and swap it for one of these i pay $29.95 then submit a claim to get $29.95 cash back . but is the green bottle a full one? if so its a good deal as you are getting a free full bottle of gas after a swap.

    • -1

Yes read the FAQ link I posted, they will do this as long as it meets certain specs - read FAQ for details. It depends on where rust is etc.

Even then I guess it can be subjective depending on attendant at the servo you are changing bottle with, if you get rejected at one always can try another or try later when another attendant is on.

And yes the way I read it its full (8.5kg)

  • great im off to my nearest servo today to trade in my old empty bottle for this full one then ill submit a claim to get the $29.95 cash back. then ill be ready for our next bbq party.

  • Fantastic Deal…!!!!

    Well Found…!!!

  • So from this I gather that I can take my empty 3.7kg bottle in, pay $34.95 to get the 8.5kg bottle and then claim the cash back?

I want to upgrade my small bottle to the bigger one if it is possible!

    • according to their faq you can do this

"You can swap any brand of gas bottle that is up to 9kg in size. You can swap a medium gas bottle for a large gas bottle and we even accept gas bottles that are out of date (expired test date) and cannot be refilled without re-inspection."

      • Yes you can but it will cost you more.

  • Great deal. I called a few 7-11 and they don't carry the green bottles. Would love to hear from ppl who successfully 'exchanged' one.

    • Use the link I provided above to locate your nearest swap n go Green outlet - http://www.elgas.com.au/custom_forms/sng_sites/locator.html

      • I did, called 2 that were close to me. At first the guys didn't even know what the swap 'n go gas bottles were, let alone the green ones. Will try a few more outlets.

  • that site location is wrong i think. i called up the caltex waterford and UNITED LOGANLEA both said they dont sell the green ones. called up the BP which is nearby too at 950 KINGSTON RD CNR ALLORA ST, WATERFORD, QLD, 4133 which isn't even on location map and they said it would cost me $66.90 to upgrade and then i have to put in a claim for the $29.95 cash back as its nothing to do with them. can anyone confirm that they in fact did swap their old 9kg gas bottle for a full green one and only paid $29.95 before i go out and waste my time? i just called up Elgas and they said you have to pay the stores upgrade price which is about $66.90 and then put in a cash back claim via the form you download online. thus $66.90-29.95 = $36.95 for a new 8.5kg green gas bottle isnt much of a deal.

    • +2

Or you could just refill your old 9kg bottle for $20 or so…

I assume that once you have "upgraded" to a green coloured bottle you then need to swap-n-go another green bottle the next time u run out of gas. It sounds like this might be a bit tricky since they dont seem to sell them in many places.

      • +1

        I'm with you.

I don't want $29.95 when it only costs me $12.99 to fill my "9KG" bottle each time. Those swap-n-go bottles cost >$40, some $27 more expensive than my current solution, it seems to me once I've done this twice I'm about $25 out of pocket. I change my gas bottle about 3 times a year, this almost warrants a neg vote from me. No where near a bargain unless you're already getting ripped off.

        • +1

Where do you refill for $12.99? That is cheap….

        • Direct from a gas supplier. (e.g. Boral Gas).

  • +2

I'm curious what makes these gas tanks "green". Is it just the colour of them? Or are they better than the environment in some way?

I believe that they are recyclable, but then again so are the metal ones.

Does it require less energy to manufacture a plastic one than a metal one? Or does it generate less pollution during the manufacture?

Personally I think I might wait until they bring out blue ones - I prefer the colour blue.

    • Finally, when you choose SWAP’n’GO GREEN, Elgas engages not-for-profit Greenfleet to plant native trees in Australia to recapture emissions equivalent to those associated with the production, transport and use of the LPG . The emissions are recaptured as the resulting forests grow.

  • The only way this could be a bargain then would be if you have an existing smaller 3.7kg bottle and wish to upgrade to an 8.5kg bottle, because AFAIK generally you can not swap the bottles for a bigger size when you change them over (well I got told that you couldn't when I looked into it).
Otherwise you're looking at ~$40 for a new 8.5kg bottle and ~$30 to fill it or pay ~$70 for the whole lot.

I'm just wondering if you can go back to the 'ordinary' bottles once you've finished with the green one though?

EDIT: Apparently you can actually upgrade 3.7kg to the larger bottles (hence not making this too much of a bargain) - will check it out tomorrow.

As you can tell from my user name, I work for Elgas. We noticed a spike in our web traffic from this site and decided to check it out. While I am here I think I can answer some of your questions:

    1. SWAP'n'GO GREEN is a relatively new product and is currently available in metro areas on the east coast.
    2. The RRP to upgrade from a 9kg steel cylinder is $29.95, which is the amount of the cashback. The upgrade is a one time thing. You pay for the cost of the gas separately.
    3. It does cost $5 more to upgrade from a 3.7kg steel cylinder.
    4. As already pointed out, the "GREEN" part of the product results from Elgas engaging not-for-profit Greenfleet to plant native trees in Australia to recapture emissions equivalent to those associated with the production, transport and use of the LPG . The emissions are recaptured as the resulting forests grow.
    5. These bottles are intended for swap only so that we can make sure that monies are contributed to Greenfleet for the gas provided.
    6. SnGG have normal BBQ valves (POL valves) and there is no camper or primus valve version.

That's it for now. I'll check back to see if there are any more questions. As someone already posted, your general swap questions may be answered at http://www.elgas.com.au/swapngo/swapngo-faq

    • I have a gas cylinder but I'm not sure if it's a primus valve, are they the ones without a regulator? Also when you say it doesn't include gas does that mean when we do a swap it will cost more than $29.95?

  • If you are confused about the valves here is my best written explanation:

POL Valves are what people think of as normal BBQ valves in Australia. They have the handwheel valve on top and you connect to it from the side.

Camper valves have the handwheel on the side and a male fitting (threads on the outside) on top.

Primus valves have a vertical female fitting and may or may not have a handwheel.

A simple sketch of each of these can be found on the page:
    www.elgas.com.au/swapngo/how-to-swapngo

Normal upgrade from 9kg steel to SnGG is $29.95 RRP plus swap price. With this offer you get the $29.95 back.
You end up with a bottle full of gas and a lot of great features as explainded at:
    www.elgas.com.au/swapngo/swapngo-green/swapngo-green-product…

    • i went to 7/11 and they told me it's cost over $100 to get a new green bottle and around $67 to swap it.

so to get a green bottle is would cost me $37 after cash back. is that correct?

doesn't seem like a good deal considering i can get a normal bottle swapped for $34 and
      refilled for cheaper.

so really the green bottle is just going to cost me more money, not save money!
