  • where is the 8th gen iris pro gone to ?

    • Not sure what that means bud. Im no expert on Spec BUT looks like a pretty good deal to me.

  • Coupon code not valid, prices are good without coupon but wouldn't trust buying this. The price is also incorrect.

  • Hmm, it's giving me Code Invalid errors.

It'd be nice to have a promo code for the i5-8250U variant

  • +3

Code should be V2PRO1, not VSPRO1, it's mentioned on the front page of their site.

  • Anybody know when the latest Gemini Lake based units will come out with native HDMI 2 support rather than HDMI through those troublesome LSPCon chips?

  • Support 4k video play …

    nice play on words.

    1 x HDMI™ (1.4b)

meaning, no to 4K computer monitor (standard, 60Hz).

    • I think you might get 4K but at only 30Hz for HDMI 1.4b

Also for HTPC functions without native HDMI 2 support you get many issues with HD Sound pass-through and HDR etc.

      • issues with HD Sound pass-through

        no, not since 1.3.

        • Here is an official Apollo Lake Kodi Forum thread 120 pages long with about %80-%90 of all posts dealing with HD Audio pass-through issues. The culprit being the LSPCon converter chip which this unit would use.

          https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=270298

        • @prxy: I doubt the LSPCon converter chip is included. Otherwise, it would be listed as HDMI 2.0. The chip is a way for intel to workaround the issue where the embedded GPU only supports 4K@60Hz via DisplayPort. The converter essentially converts a DisplayPort to HDMI (2.0). So, if audio passthrough is more important than 4K@60Hz, then intel's HDMI port (1.4b) is better for you. For me, I'd rather either a DisplayPort or an HDMI 2.0 port through that converter chip (audio passthrough issue can be addressed with firmware update) or both would be even better.

For VORKE, they are obviously saving cost so they simply used the HDMI port (which is 1.4b). And, this is Kaby Lake R, so it is more like an enhanced 7th gen intel CPU, rather than a true 8th gen CPU (so the embedded GPU is essentially still 7th gen).

If they included a DisplayPort, you could use get a 4K 60Hz DisplayPort to HDMI cable (essentially having a converter chip inside the cable). I doubt the Type-C port is thunderbolt.

        • @netsurfer:

That makes the situation even worse so instead of having an LSPcon chip on-board you now have to buy a cable that contains an LSPcon chip to achieve HDMI 2 and have all the trouble I mentioned above.

If you read the Kodi forum post linked above you will realize lots of people are having trouble even with the latest firmware update.

Hence my question above as to when units based on the Gemini Lake chips will be available. (Soon I hope)

A HTPC based on Gemini Lake with native HDMI 2 and Hevc 10 decoding will hopefully not require making a trade-off between 4K@60Hz, HDR or HD Audio Passthrough etc.

        • @prxy: It's not necessary worse. If it is a DisplayPort, at least you have a choice. You can either use a cable WITHOUT the chip or a cable WITH the chip.

Your original comment was the HDMI port in this particular product has the chip. Since it is HDMI 1.4b, it doesn't. Intel was aware of the LSPcon chip issue and a firmware update was provided back in 2017. People reported issue being resolved after firmware update back in 2017. Also, read the below:

          http://nucblog.net/2017/03/intel-releases-the-final-hdmi-fir…

Same goes for the cables. Get the latest firmware (obviously, don't get lousy cable with no firmware update support).

Based on NUCBlog's review, the HTPC section: The only letdown here is that Intel will not support HDR on Gemini Lake NUCs.

Intel purposely decided not provide the driver. I am not surprised. This is the second time Intel does this (not allowing certain features unless you get i3 or above). Also, after my past experience with Celeron/Pentium based NUCs, you really should consider i3 NUC minimum. Unless you really need the NUC form factor, AMD and nVidia graphics cards do a way better job with 4K support.

        • @netsurfer:

Sorry mate but I think it is you who better read.

Start on the last page of the Kodi thread above and work backwards.

There are still many people who are having many different issues with the latest firmware so don't tell me its fixed.

Essentially if you get a chip that doesn't natively support HDMI 2 you are most likely stuck with the trade-offs I mentioned above.

Especially with the pass through of certain finicky amps.

Doesn't matter whether the chip is embedded in a circuit or a display port/HDMI converter cable.

There are so many things that can go wrong through the graphics, sound system and HDMI chains.

I personally want a very cheap, low power, small NUC like form factor so will not be using any of the i iterations. All I need are HTPC functions, media file server, web browsing etc.

If it is indeed the case that Intel won't be supplying the HDR driver for Gemini Lake to maximize profit then it is their bad luck I won't be falling into that trap.

I mainly use android boxes for HTPC anyway but the one thing they are not so good for is fulfilling media file server roles.

I therefore only need one NUC and will not be buying anything without native HDMI 2.

You or anyone else are most welcome to tear your hair out in futile frustration trying to cobble together a solution for hours, days, weeks like many on the Kodi forums.

But if you don't want the hassle go native HDMI 2.

At least you've been made aware.

@prxy: Since you have read the forum, you would have noticed the following:

          • People are finding firmware 1.66 works (1.71 is problematic). The NUCBlog tested 1.66 and they did not find any issue with audio passthrough.
          • Some of the new Gemini Lake based boards have this chip in it. It doesn't make sense, but one person reported that it does. So Gemini Lake is not necessary safe.

          Also:

          • If you intend to run linux and Kodi on Gemini Lake NUC, you need to wait (since the official version doesn't support the GPU yet - according NUCBlog article).
          • If the cable doesn't support HDMI 2, you cannot even get 4K@60Hz.

My main point is about your comment:

The culprit being the LSPCon converter chip which this unit would use.

That's not true due to it is HDMI 1.4a. Now, for a 7th gen intel chip (this CPU is a revised 7th gen chip, rather than a 8th gen chip), HDMI 2.0 native is not there. Thus, the only hope for a 7th gen GPU is either DisplayPort, USB-C Thunderbolt 3 or HDMI 2.0 via the converter chip.

My point is: this particular deal, the device cannot even do 4K@60Hz. HD Sound pass-through is not even an issue - because if Intel cannot even get audio passthrough right at HDMI 1.4a native level, how are they going to get HDMI 2.0a right?

        • @prxy: Conclusion first:
          1. The LSPCon issue is not applicable to this item (it doesn’t even have it). 2. 8th gen Celeron/Pentium based NUCs are unsafe as a 4K 60Hz HDR solution currently.

Now the details if you are interested:

This LSPCon audio passthrough issue was a known issue. The way intel handled it was messy. 1.66 was released way back to fix it. No idea why intel continued to mess with the firmware and ended up breaking it again in 1.71. You can consistently see in forums that people reporting no issue when using 1.66 (even in the forum link you provided). I own or have owned 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th gen NUCs. In terms of mess, the LSPCon firmware wasn’t the biggest mess. 4th, 6th, and 7th gen NUCs all require firmware upgrades to work properly, especially the 6th gen NUCs (overcurrent mess followed by m.2 slot bandwidth mess).

On the 8th gen CPU/GPU based NUCs. So far, intel have decided that like the 7th gen ones, Celeron and Pentium based models won’t get HDR. You really have to wonder whether intel really care about consumers wanting a cost effective HTPC solution. This is now the 3rd consecutive NUC generations where intel held back on the GPU side of Celeron/Pentium NUCs (wanting you to buy i3 or better model instead if you want the missing feature). You can certainly tell that intel have not been putting in 100% for the past few years. Only after AMD started becoming competitive again, they put in some real effort to PC CPUs.

Funny thing about Vorke and Ubuntu- they make this one so presumably it works well with Ubuntu. I've got a Vorke V1+ which has Ubuntu on at the moment. I never use it because the instant it boots the fan starts going crazy, running flat out constantly. Tried half a dozen linux distros on it- same thing happens.
