Not from Melbourne, but if you are eligible, you could get dental assistance from Community Dental Clinics:
    https://www.dhsv.org.au/patient-information/who-is-eligible

If you're on Private Health Cover:
Check to see if your provider has Gap free services or affiliations with particular dentists.

Here's some average price comparison sites to help:
https://www.choice.com.au/health-and-body/dentists-and-denta… (Scale and clean (removal of plaque and calculus) (114) $91–157)
    https://www.smile.com.au/dental-fees/vic

If you prefer a particular dentist, just ask upfront of their pricing.

  • I pay 79.95 in Sydney

    • im 2 years late but where is it?

  • Do you have health insurance or no?

    • Private health insurance i have

      • If you're with a provider that's part of the Smile network I can recommend Manchester Unity Dental in the CBD

BTW, health insurance does not do anything for your Scale and Clean, you only need extras cover.
And you don't need health insurance for Extra's covers.
There is no tax benefit, but usually it include ambulance/optical/dental covers etc.

I think what you mean to say is Hospital Cover does not do anything for general dental needs.

      Per:

Private health insurance cover is generally divided into hospital cover, general treatment cover (also known as ancillary or extras cover) and ambulance cover. Ambulance cover may be available separately, combined with other policies, or in some cases is covered by your state government.

I would still consider "general treatment cover (also known as ancillary or extras cover)" as a category of health insurance.

      • Correct, most common question they ask is, have you got health insurance?, which could be either hospital cover or extras cover or both. But most people assume their hospital cover can do their general dental needs etc.

  • I have a private health insurance.

    • As described above, if you have extra's cover included. Usually, you don't need to pay anything, depend on your cap.
Go around the block, find a dentist, tell them what cover you cover you got and get a quote.
I found that, same dentist, same day, different heath insurance provider, they charge different amount. Apparently its normal.

Or you can goto this guy, http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/authorities-allege… :)

  • I go to "Women in Dentistry" - they are at the top end of Collins St in the CBD.

They are not cheap but they are very good and I get a decent amount back with my NIB dental extras. The Scale and Clean is also to double check you don't have any issues with your teeth and general oral health.

If you have "extras" cover you could find out if your fund has their own clinics - NIB does. It might be worth ringing them up and finding out the costs.

don't let them give you the bogus 'remineralisation treatment'. That sort of nonsense drains your wallet and rorts private health insurance (which contributes to year on year increases to health insurance for everybody). Sometimes the charge alone for that 'treatment' is 80 dollars or more, its literally high ppm fluoride applied to your teeth for about 1 minute.

    • Is this charged per tooth? I remember the dentist described it as 'Would you like me to apply fluoride?'. I stupidly thought oh yeah, toothpaste has that, sure, apply some toothpaste.

      Billed bloody $60 per tooth.

      • $60 per tooth? WTF which dentist? and where? lol

        • No Gaps dental, Haymarket NSW close to Sydney CBD. I never went back and later learnt on ozb to avoid no gaps dentists.

        • @R-Man: $60 must be the whole charge..they don't normally charge a gap if you have extras

        • @negger: no no the $60 was not a gap payment. I paid no gap.

My insurance paid for $60 per tooth - so my limit reduced a huge amount.

        • @R-Man: not sure what you are talking about. No way it's that expensive. Average rate here and item number 121 is not per tooth like filling for example. Http://www.choice.com.au/health-and-body/dentists-and-dental…

  • 80 for all of your teeth.

60 per tooth?! What the heck…

    • Yep. your username is how i felt!

In her defence (which is not much) she stopped after front 8 or so teeth and said "I'll stop there in case your limit wont cover the rest of your teeth"

That's when i was suspicious and asked WOT do u mean 'rest of my teeth?' and learnt she was charging per tooth.

      • how long ago was this? that is the biggest con job I have heard in a while.
fluoride treatment been around for while, all they do is put a small paste on a silicon mouth guard in your mouth and ask you to bite it for min.
Maybe its a whitening treatment not fluoride ?

        • April 2016. I am sure the word fluoride was used, and she discussed how the pits of my teeth needed it if that narrows it down?

its literally high ppm fluoride applied to your teeth for about 1 minute.

I think this was it, it was applied by a little high pressure hose

        • @R-Man:
Do you have the receipt from your dental visit, there will be an item number for each treatment.
Normal fluorite "remineralization" is simply a foam sprayed into a mouth-guard which is then put in your mouth for 60-90 seconds.

        • @singlemalt72: no mouth guard was involved so I guess it's not that

I would need to hunt the receipt from an old insurer, but i just read the cost per item link above and I think fissure sealant 161 sounds more accurate to the procedure because the dentist mentioned I "have many pits in my teeth". I googled fissure sealant and saw the mention of teeth pits.

I seem to remember it being described as fluoride treatment but I definitely remember being charged per tooth so I may be wrong about fluoride

        • +2

@R-Man: fissure sealant is not flouride application and it does cost a fair bit.

  • I go to Smile Solutions at the corner of Collins and Swanston in the CBD.

    Prices somewhere around … inspection $50, x-ray $170, filling $200, clean $100, remineralising/cariostatic $45

Yeah, a bit pricey, but my health insurance covers the majority, its close the work, and the dentist I see is excellent.

  • Cleeland Dental - you will not be disappointed

    http://www.cleelanddental.com.au/

61 Cleeland St, Dandenong VIC 3175

  • Don't need a dentist if you just want de-scaling. Just use a mouth wash that is for Tartar Control once daily for a week, unless it is extreme, then use for longer. It will just disappear.

    • +1 for Thai dental, very high quality work for a fraction of the cost in Australia.
