Oh man exactly what I needed - I always wanted to split massive 5 ton tree trunks!

In Aldi WA, latest catalogue, page 12, winter garden section, there is a 6.5 tonne log splitter with 5 year warranty, 2200w log splitter. Spec appears to include: Variable adjustment of ram, 50 to 250mm log diameter capacity, Max log length of 520mm.

    $249.00

Looks like its for a sale 28th April.

    Hope this helps

Wish Aldi bring a 36v line trimmer real cheap, would like to grab a Ryobi equivalent for half the usual price

    • It won't beryobi, it'll be ozito :(

I'm fine with ozito but I don't like the plastic cutting angles on their's, no good near walls

      • Ozito doesn't have a 36v I believe, also also having a 36v on sale is slim, gumtree hunt for now :)

        • Ah, 36. I missed that. Not sure that line trimmers need much juice? Our last one was corded, I've never tried a battery one.

        • @justtoreply: lol a friend's dad put a chainsaw motor on and used steel wire for string. It snipped through trees a inch thick rofl

        • @justtoreply:

I've got a couple of 36v batteries already, so looking for 36v units, otherwise would go 18v

    • You don't need 36v these days. Ryobi have a 18v brushless that has the same power as the 36v non brushless.
I have the aeg 18v brushless trimmer and had the ryobi 36v so can say from experience.
The issue is the Ryobi unit doesnt have the expand-it connection, but the AEG one does… Go figure.
I know they are the same company and all but you would think it would be the other way around..
One example that 36v doesnt always equal more power is the Ryobi Jet blowers. They both have the same output in terms of volume and velocity but one is 18v and the other 36v…
The model numbers are OBL1800J and RBL3600J for anyone interested

      • I've got two 36v batteries and chargers for the lawnmower, don't want to maintain another 18v battery on charge etc , that's the only reason

  • Cheaper to just eat more fibre.

it looks complicated. how does it attach to the toilet?

But a tonne is a measure of mass, not a measure of force!

    • But the splitting force should be consistent for logs of the same size (the variance across species can be accounted for). So it's a good proxy.

Think about it, if it was specced as a force you wouldn't have a clue what you could split with it. And that's coming from an ex timber bridge engineer.. (well, yeah i could tell you for pure compression, but i doubt this works that way it'd be inefficient)

      • Conversely, I have no clue what '5 tonnes' will split.
Google tells me other log splitters are measured in psi. Which seems much more appropriate (although not an SI-unit).

        • +1

Tonnes of force = tonne force = 49.03325 kN.

PSI is the hydraulic system not the ram itself, and would be a useless measure because it involves the contact surface area.

A pin with a 1 micron tip might have a few thousand PSI of force whereas a dull blade on this might have a few hundred at most, though only one will split a log.

@Rutger: Ahh, that makes a lot more sense!

  • For easy log only. Difficult log required 20t to split.

  • Is there any specials on shovels for hiding the body afterwards?

This is a similar deal to last year. At the time various features of both machines (from Aldi and Bunnings) suggested they came from the same factory, with just different brand names and colours. I went with the Aldi option because of a five year warranty. I believe the Ryobi warranty was only two years. As it happened I returned the machine to Aldi for a full refund within two months of the purchase because the shaft along which the splitter runs bent to the point it looked like a ski jump. Most concerning I had only tried soft wood on the splitter before the problem arose. If in stock I will have a look at the Ryobi (we rely on wood heating and the wood from stockists has not been split particularly well in the last few years).

  • 5 tonnes… tonnes

  • Thanks OP, will grab one tomorrow 😊

  • Many of the logs I have to split are more than 250mm.
The ones less than that probably/mostly aren't difficult.

  • Just bought the 20T log splitter with ebay code PART20.
