Tyre Punctured, Patched and Got It Back All Scratched up

So my tyre got punctured the other day, so i brought to a shop to get it patched up.
When i got my car back, my rim is all scratched up, around and inside, deep scratches!

What are my options?

Note: my rim was perfect, not a single scratch.

What did the store say when you asked them about it?

    • +4

Probably he asked OzB first before going to the store where he got his tyre fixed.

      • -3

        exactly.

I'm at work now, so i want to know what my options are if they try to avoid their responsibilities

        • How about you give them a chance or at the least inform them first? Why didn't you say anything when you picked it up? First thing I do when I get a service is inspect the work…

        • @Slippery Fish:

it was late, it was raining, and the missus picked the car up, and she was in a hurry.

I have called them up, and they said to bring the car in.'

          Will post pic

        • Options:
          1. Return to business and ask them to rectify.
          2. Nothing. Leave it be, it's only a car wheel.
          3. Have it repaired by someone at your cost.
          4. DIY repair.
          5. Buy new wheel.
          6. Trade the car in, you are due for an $80k investment anyway.
          7. Torch the car for an insurance job.

          1. Just complain about it to anyone who appears to be listening.
        • @Euphemistic:

          I like number 7

        • @rockuman_ex: I prefered an Italian job.

        • @Slippery Fish: does that have a happy ending?

        • @Euphemistic: watch it and find out lol

    That’s sad

Did you notice when you picked the car up ? Or when you parked at work?

You need to call them ASAP otherwise their response will be “how do we know you didn’t curb your wheel at work”

  • -2

can you upload a picture? may be they have swap your rim from other position?

    Name and shame?

    • +5

Why name and shame when there's no evidence of who's at fault. Got to wonder why the OP didn't report it the minute he collected it.

Not going to name and shame.

Going here for opinions, not shaming.

      • I'd say the balancing machine did that, it's a circular scratch at a consistent level. Maybe the apprentice forgot to take the rim off and was to scared to tell the boss and just put it back?

      • It's an Audi.

OP is this a high yield investment vehicle?

that wheel looks old. are you sure they didn't swap yours for an older one?

    • Name and shame?

There is the possibility the "damage" was not caused by the tyre repair shop.
Organizing a good old fashioned public stoning based on a small piece of information you read online is perhaps a little short sighted.

How could you possibly not notice the rim was "all scratched up, around and inside, deep scratches" when you picked it up?

That will be the obvious response from the repairer and I reckon you have a snowball chance in hell of getting any compensation.

Easily, anyone with no interest in cars (eg my wife) would not notice.

When I bought new tyres a while back they installed a different type to what I ordered - my wife picked up the car and had no thought of checking. When I got home and looked at the car it was the first thing I noticed

      • Lol you get upgraded or downgraded?

      • +1

2 times you send let your wife pick up the car, and both times there are problems.

I'd say pick the car up yourself in future, as your wife doesn't notice what's important to you.

        • Some people have a 9-5 job, thus they won't have time to pick up the car or things like this.

        • 2 times??

I didn't "send my wife to pick up the car". It was just more convenient at the time. And I didn't her to check the tyres that were installed. You just sometimes assume that when you buy something you are getting what you pay for

      • I'm intrigued. What did you say to the tyre shop & how did they respond?

        • I phoned them up, the person I spoke to was very apologetic and said sorry, come in and we will sort it out. Then when I got in the manager came out and said that the tyres I ordered were not available, so they had given an "equivalent" tyre from a different manufacturer and couldn't do anything about it. I did a bit if research and found out that the ones they had given me were similar, so I just accepted it in the end as it was clear they weren't going to anything about it. It just left a bad taste that they didn't ask first and I told them that - they agreed and said next time I need anything come in and they will "look after me really well" .

  • did you take a before photo of the rim before taking it to the shop?

    • +2

Why would you do that? Why not take a photo of the bumper incase they scratch that too?

    • I do just that. Same thing happened to me a few years ago. Now I take photos in front of them and explain why I am doing it.

  • Maybe they got it mixed up with someone else's rim?? Simple mistake?

  • It looks like they've dropped the rim. I've never been in your position but you could demand them to refurb the wheel (retail cost is between $120ish-200ish a tyre, for a proper respray, ie same paint, in a booth not a guy in a van)

    • How can you tell they've dropped the rim without a pic?

      • There is a pic…

        • there wasn't

        • @Euphemistic: There was when you posted

How can you tell they've dropped the rim without a pic?

          :)

Got the car back in, told the manager, he said he didn't know how it happened, but the guy inside told me that the other guy did it (he wasn't working today).

So they're going to take the wheel and get it fixed.

    Done, case close.

    • +11

Now that wasn't so hard. Shouldn't that have been your first action?

      • And in record time for a forum post…

  • Are you sure the wheel were perfect before and the scratches are more apparent now because they cleaned the wheel while fixing it?

  • Case closed.

  • is it possible to fix those deep scratches?

    • Those aren't deep scratches and wheel refurbs are extremely easy. Shot blasting to sand it down, filing any remaining bits or putty where bits missing, cure it, paint and prime. Quite an easy job though takes bit of time and effort.

The main differences between shops is quality of paint and warranty in case it peels after few months.

      Here's more info: https://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/alloy-wheel-refurbishme…

  • Rims look better with the scratch

  • Having changed many tyres in an earlier life it is not surprising that at some stage these rims will get scratched up. The domed out shape is the reason.
Hate to see what happens when the wheel hits a curb.

I would suggest that you take pictures before each wheel service (puncture/ tyre change) and warn the dealer of the potential scratching due to their shape.

    • Thanks, lesson learned.
