Is It Worth Buying a Blu-Ray Writer?

Just wondering if it's worth purchasing a BLu-Ray writer in this day and age? THey never really had a good market as they were quickly taken over by HDD (hard disk drives and SATA/ ) as well as External HDD, USB drives that well exceeded the BLu ray size. Was looking at these websites:

or

Well, one could assume that would be roughly correlated with how many Blu-Rays one wishes to burn.

Physical media? What's that, old timer?

  • as above, the question is, you burn bluray or not

If you want the ultimate in Home Theatre entertainment, its worth it.
Just hook up a SFF PC like a Dell Optiplex 9020, or a new built slim pc (eg SilverStone rvz02-6700k).

That way you could have an All-in-One box for your console gaming, emulators, streaming, movies, web browsing.
Windows Media Centre works like a treat on Windows10, so that's what I would recommend a BluRay drive for (playing 4K BluRay movies).
…though as stated above, Slim External HDD's (500GB - 2TB) are now the de facto storage method.

  • BDR-XD05TB seems to have alot of bad reviews, but average experience is quite positive.

I would get the Pioneer BDR-XS06.

  • Is it worth buying Blu-Ray Writer for backing up ?

Yeah, if you lives next to EMP equipment.

  • You know that you need the latest PC specs/mobo to use it due to compatibility?
    Cheers

  • I dont build with a cd/dvd/bluray anymore, I use the space for moar usb ports and card readers.

Generally I think an optical drive in a desktop is a sensible move, even if lots of people and manufacturers now avoid them. Not only are they useful for offsite, non-volatile backups of your most important data, they are good for ripping disks (music CD, DVDs, Blu Rays). I wouldn't overpay (eg ~$70-80), and I'm not necessarily convinced of externals, but I also wouldn't buy a case without scope to have an optical drive.

Saying that, it's quite a while since I've burnt a disk, much more on the reading side of things.
