Why Do People Install a Home Security System?

Hi,

A house I recently purchased comes with motion detecting home security system, I am thinking of getting an electrician to remove it. Before doing it, I thought I ask from ozbargainers.

Whats the benefit of home security system ?

Like I read reducing premiums on insurance.

Otherwise, for someone with content insurance why would having a home security system matters.

Thanks,

Some people value their lives and kids more than objects or might be away from home for long periods so they use these systems to either monitor and record or view remotely to ensure all is fine.

    • Thanks Hybroid, can you be more specific how a security system can safe lives ! An intruder can break in and do whatever even when everyone is asleep? how would the alarm wont activate when kids are at home (say going to grab water at night, etc). What if robbery happens at daylight. Could you please elaborate.

My neighbor would set theirs at night (2 young daughters) very few false alarms as they were used to avoiding the sensor areas, we had an alarm also but only set it when we were out, (why set it when you're home I thought) well, few weeks ago 3am, three aholes kicked the front doors in, door sensor activates, they run off. Who knows what would have happened.

If your home looks more secure than your neighbour's house then you are less likely to be broken into. There's a lot of psychology to home security and criminal behaviour.

    • The home looks more expensive than the neighbour's. Still how having it makes a difference?

      • The risk of getting caught makes the difference.

        • Career crimson know very very very few of them get caught unless they do stupid shit when fencing it or bragging.

        Risk vs Reward.

        • Deter a break in by being more 'difficult' than the other options
        • Loud internal screamers disorient people and make them want to get out faster (ie, less ransacking)
        • Alarm sound will alert others and increase the desire to get out faster
        • You can arm your alarm while you sleep, it all depends how you configure it (zones, etc)
        • An alarm can let you know someone has been in your house (is someone living in your roof?)
        • Add a street visible flashing red LED to your external screamer to advertise "ALARM HERE, GO ELSEWHERE"

        Lots of reasons.

        • 2nd point above… Is why back in the day i used to wire the car alarm siren behind the dash.

someone breaks in, make loud noise.. loud noise attracts attention.. police come.. house saved (hopefully)

The salesman at the security system demo was very convincing. Arriving home late at night knowing the alarm hasn’t been triggered is comforting. However, arriving home late at night after a false alarm is way more stressful than arriving home without any alarm at all.

If you don’t want it, don’t have it uninstalled, just don’t use it. The insurance company maybgive you a discount for having one, but they don’t need to know you never activate it.

    • Get a quality system and don't suffer false alarms.

I've had my security system for over 15 years, never had a false alarm yet.

And I totally agree with "Arriving home late at night knowing the alarm hasn’t been triggered is comforting".

    For security

I have 8 cameras on my property and two Rott weilers vs my neighbour who has nothing. Which are you going to rob ?

and most men have valuable balls they want to protect. one of my dogs loves nibbling around that region.

and maybe my house is a decoy for my one next door with all the gold

it gives you that peace of mind knowing if something happens you're prepared.

i've been usig this little app on a heap of old phones, plus i've purchased whatever phone you can get from coles or woolies on special for $30

have 10 phones setup with motion detection enabled.

if motion is detected it takes a 5 second clip with sound also.

pretty good for a free app

what app? have 10 phones or 10 cameras?

      • 10 phones so 10 cameras, sorry i thought i put the app link in https://alfred.camera/

        • Cool. Thanks. I must try this since I have a bunch of old phones collecting dust. Most useful comment I've read in ages.

  • to not have better security

  • 1 - Insurance gives you no discount. Only a discount for monitored alarm system (from an external organisation)
2 - Like many other posters, to give you a piece of mind 24/7 that you can view your premises remotely.
3 - Can be used for evidence if there are any illegal activities that has been captured. Break-ins … etc
4 - Brings your neighbours' closer as they normally request to point the cameras across the road to their premises or next door/viewing area.
5 - Deterrent for possible intruders.

I would opt for at least 6 or more 1080p POE cameras with at least 1TB+ storage from a reputable brand.
They don't come with any battery backups but would look into purchasing a respectable brand/Wattage UPS.

    Cheers

I’m with aami and they gave me a discount for having an alarm that calls my mobile (no external company).

      • Ok. But they don't discount on CCTV as per OPs rationale

  • Why people install home security system?

    why not?

  • I've got a back to base alarm, but renewing time is coming up. If I don't renew it, does it just become a motion detect alarm?

  • +4

what's the benefit of having an already installed security system removed?

  • +1

As others said, an alarm going off can scare off robbers.

Contents insurance doesn’t cover more custom items and does not cover sentimental value.

A house I recently purchased comes with motion detecting home security system, I am thinking of getting an electrician to remove it.

Why on earth would you remove it? Just don't use it…?

    As for reasons…

    • Scare off potential burglars

    • Back to base is handy for while on holidays

    • Insurance discount

  • No idea I ask the same question but then again I live with two other guys and loads of people come through my place throughout the year so for family gatherings and social stuff or what not so we have enough human sentries as it is nearly everyday also house looks like shit lol and you can easily see inside there is nothing to steal besides our microwave or fridge and even if they did good on them it's about time it needs an upgrade haha lol

TL;DR nothing to steal.. someone always home.. home shows nothing of interest

  • an alarm system to me is useless unless there are motion detectors outside or window and door triggers.

some standard alarms only have internal PIR sensors which is useless, because if someone was to break in they would have broken something to be inside your house to trigger the alarm.. if something is broken that means it is going to cost you money to replace or repair.

a good alarm system should be used as a deterrent, triggered before anything is broken.

  • "for someone with content insurance why would having a home security system matter"

Now, I don't want to judge harshly, but for you to say this would mean that you own nothing interesting, unique or meaningful. Which means you must be one hell of a generic and boring person with zero personality or emotional attachment who I assume would be happy as a pea in a pod to call a hotel room home. That isn't the case for me, so I want to diminish the risk of losing any of it, and a security system is a means to do just that. Not to mention our safety.

  • If I may ask, what seems to be your main reason why you want it removed? lol. Is it because it doesn't match your house's design? or mainly because of the insurance thingy? Basing on your post, it seems that you're well off, and that you're not going to need the cameras. Would you be willing to give it away? Most of us' reason why we install security cameras is because of course for "security". Doesn't the two way communication sound useful? :)
