Unlocking HD6950 to HD6970

Heyas,

Though most people that are in to their hardware probably already know, I thought I'd share this anyway. Not technically a bargain, but it's definitely in the Ozbargain spirit!

I flashed my HIS 6950 yesterday and it all worked fine, so at current pricing, I now have a $450 card for $350 :D

  • Do you think the 6950 is worth upgrading to from a 5850?
Assuming that I only play games at 1080p res on a single monitor.

    • Depends on what sort of games you play and at what detail.

    • I have a 5850HD too and I'm not upgrading.
But if I was, it'd have to be something top end like 5970 or gtx 580.

I went from a 4870x2, so it wasn't necessary at all, but the Ozbargainer in me decided I had to rort this ;)

It sure is a heck of a lot quieter though, runs SC2 and Civ V at 1920x1200, max everything with much less noise.

scrimshaw: IMHO, you can skip a generation of video cards and still be able to play the majority of games at enthusiast levels.

    • My 4870 is still going strong on a 2560*1440, albeit i have to play on medium on some games

      • Nice monitor! The 2Gb RAM on the 6-series cards will help out quite a bit for that ;)

        • Yeah the 512mb on my 4870 is really limiting it. Can't wait till me HSC is over, then I'd jump all over Ivy Bridge and 7XX0 series and finally let my Dell shine!

    • I still have my 4870 x2. Any games with a noticeable difference?

No diff that I can see in the games I play. The 4870x2 can pretty much handle everything except DX11, which isn't that big a deal. I recently went on a silent PC craze and moved my rig in to a FD Define R3 case with 3 silent fans - with everything on max the card would overheat during extended gaming sessions =[

  • could someone here talk in english please lol
