Make sure to drop the below items under "Built my Dell" to get the price I mentioned,

2. Keyboard
3. Mouse
4. Freight
5. Intel vPro

Of course, it's not for gamers.

can get keys online for like $5

      • -1

you can pirate for free doesn't make it right

        • +1

grey area and red area are 2 different things

        • +3

          @xEnt:
Nothing grey about it but if it helps you sleep at night

        • @xEnt: Just get the 5$ windows. In order to make up to Microsoft, use Bing/Edge combo for a month afterwards. Or if you have an Xbox and buy full priced games and subscriptions, that's fair enough.

Pretty sure they sleep soundly at night as well being a complete monopoly and all.

      • are these legal keys for win licenses? I paid much more at kinguin.

    • Only if you want Windows 10 Pro.

  • It shows up as $1,344.81 to me. Do I miss something?

EDIT: I see, you have to remove Windows 10 Pro ($223.30).

    • +1

      Yep, the comment above yours!

      • Yep, I just realised. But after removing the Windows 10 Pro, it shows up as $1,121.50, not $1,030.20 as OP claimed.

        • +1

If you drop the KB, Mouse, Freight and Intel vPro, it should be 1030.20.

        • +3

@XeKToReX: Damm, OP should state how the configs is, and needs to strip all the extras.

        • @O O:

Awesome little machines, I've got a 9020M with a 4570T/16GB/256GB SSD and a 1TB 2.5" HDD, super powerful for their size.

        • @XeKToReX: I just found a cheaper one at Harris Technology, Windows 10 Pro included at $1,015.52 delivered.

        • @O O:

          Thats an i5 though

        • @mikokik5: Ahh, I see.

        • +2

@O O: they're often very cheap at the Dell Outlet too if you can wait for them to show up.

        • @O O:
Just like booking a flight for the last 5 years…
Carbon offset, travel insurance, hire car, extra baggage, accommodation…..

        • @mikokik5:
Only trivial differences between the i5 and i7, especially so in SFF machines.
200MHz difference in frequency and -2MB cache, for typical loads the difference will be a few %, for a saving of a few hundred dollars.
In this case i'd go the i5, factoring in the inclusion of Win10 pro it's much better value.

        • @virtual81:

I guess if thats how you value win pro.. but yeah should be oranges to lemons comparison.. and don’t get me started on them apples..

  • O O,
    Customise and add Ubuntu Linux

    Ubuntu Linux 16.04,FI,WW

    But shows up as $1,121.50

    • +2

Minus keyboard, mouse, remote management card and select shipping by sea to get the OPs price.

        Thanks

  • We give these out at work (and the previous model, 7040). Really decent machines and seriously tiny. Don't think I've had any that have failed so far of either model.

    • Yep great for business use. Not cheap for personal, but good if you don't want to build your own

    • I too have the Optiplex 7050. I have had issues using it with dual Dell 27" monitors (extra expansion for 2nd monitor added) where one of the monitors not turning on properly after standby. It is not the monitor (swapped the ports and issue remained with the port). To recover each time from standby with dual screens I have to turn the monitor off, then back on again. Latest drivers do not fix it. Tried alternating cable type (DP vs mini DP/etc). Don't suppose you have come across the problem and know how to fix it?

      • We do have weird things like that with our 24" dell monitors. We are pretty sure it's the displayport technology itself and find HDMI a lot more reliable. You could try daisy chaining the monitors together using DP1.2 if your monitor supports it. Then it would be using a single port on the PC.

Most of the 8th-gen U line outpace the 7700T, so what do you think the Kaby Lake-G NUCs will be like?

Do not become another sucker who buys a 7th-gen Intel chip; the CPU market leapt forward with the introduction Ryzen.

  • +7

In what universe is this even remotely a good deal? That's almost the price of a Hades Canyon NUC, which will obliterate this in every performance metric.

Or build this https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/wPXW3b for a similar size, better graphics performance, double the ram (and much faster) and ssd, for $100 less, not even considering sale prices. Grab them on eBay 10% off for another $90 saved, and these are literally small enough to take on carry-on luggage if you happen to be travelling, for TRS.

    • Some good points here - but consider…

The Hades Canyon NUC is definitely more powerful with a similar form factor. But sadly it's not yet available in Australia. And the Australian price is pretty high - it will apparently start at $1000 for the base model, and that doesn't include RAM or SSD. But perhaps the cheaper Skull Canyon NUC would be worth considering, which would still have similar performance to this deal and a comparable size.

As for your custom build, it's a sweet machine but it's over 3 times the total volume - which may or may not be an issue depending on the application - and requires you to build it yourself, which doesn't appeal to many folks. And it doesn't have Dell's excellent warranty service.

      • +1

$1000 at launch, for comparable performance, i.e. well below $1000 in a matter of weeks, and with vastly superior GPU performance.

This is a last-minute cash grab from Dell.

        • +1

Sure, $1000 at launch, plus SSD and RAM….so more like $1200 for a running machine with comparable specs. I don't see the price dropping in the short term, the Skull Canyon certainly didn't and still commands a decent price today. And yes, the GPU performance in the HC unit is lot better, but that's not really relevant for office workstations. Nobody looking at this deal is buying an Optiplex SFF hoping it will be capable of VR and AAA games.

Dell is not doing a panic cash-grab because Hades Canyon is coming to eat their lunch - the NUC doesn't really compete in the same space as Dell's Optiplex lineup at all. Instead, Dell is clearing stock of this outgoing model before they launch their own range of 8th-gen Intel workstations, which they announced a week ago. https://techreport.com/news/33555/dell-celebrates-25-years-o…

        • -1

@klaw81: they compete in exactly the same space, they're virtually the same size, they're lower in TDP, and they're better.

As for i7-8700T USFF price points, I'd imagine they'll be available for less than $1300, which still presents better value than this because of the 40% performance increase.

        • @jasswolf: While they are similar products, they don't compete directly.

Intel sells NUC devices as barebones units for hobbyists, enthusiasts and DIY small business owners. Most of their sales are via 3rd party resellers. You can't buy a complete, plug-and-play NUC from Intel - only from custom PC shops.

Dell sells Optiplex PCs as a complete operating unit, with an SSD, RAM and OS pre-installed. Their primary market is corporations who typically buy in large quantities.

        • @klaw81: I'm referring to the form factor, not the after-market service and largest sectors of demand.

OzBargain largely caters to individuals who are prepared to be thrifty and use a little elbow grease to ensure good value.

  • wait a couple of years when Defence start offload the i5 version at auction. There will a shit load flooding the market
