  • He will mainly be using it with his short wave radio .

    What does this mean?

TRRS is just 4 pole 3.5mm correct?

Price? Screen size? Uses? Memory card? Need a good camera?

Have you done any research at all?

  • Sorry , I haven't compared.
I tried googling and could only find a Samsung.
I thought if could get a few ideas I could compare them.
He would like to be able to fit it in his pocket.
    About 64gb.
    Price about $600
    A reasonable camera.
I thought they came with memory cards.
I wanted to do this by myself but am getting nowhere.
Thank you for telling me what I need to look for.
Wanted to do this without bothering our children .

    • As a "child" who frequently has to undo the damage when Dad calls iiNet support and they get him to re-image windows to solve an issue with him forgetting where his bookmarks are, can I suggest in the most strongest way you do ask them for some help.
I think all Android phones will support your requirement, (well, there are a couple without audio sockets, so nearly all!), but if your kids are tech savvy they might cover off things you haven't thought of - avoiding a $600 mistake.

      • Thank you

    • A TRRS socket just refers to a audio jack that has 4 'contacts', each meant for a different purpose (e.g left audio, right audio, microphone, sometimes even video)

and on most phones, when you look at the audio jack starting from the tip down to the bottom, you are looking at left / right / microphone and ground

I tried googling and could only find a Samsung.

I would start by comparing some "recent phones", for example head over to GSM Arena, and play around with the search parameters on the Phone Finder to look for features that you want.

Here's a search to get you started — it filters phones with SD card, Audio jack, is relatively recent (released 2017) and doesn't cost over $600

      • Thank you. Great help

  • I had to look up what a TRRS socket is. Most of the time they are called a 3.5mm headphone socket. Most Android phones have this socket. There are a few exceptions like the latest Google Pixel and some recent Motorola and HTC phones.

Just check current and past deals in the Mobile section of OzBargain for ideas.

    The HTC 10 looks ok.

    • Thank you. Will look it up.
I only wrote TRRS as that was what my husband said. With all this help I will get better at this.

    • that HTC 10 has a VOLTE issue — some people are returning the phones to JB because it was originally a Telstra branded device and Voice over LTE with Optus and Voda won't work on it due to some software setting incompatibility

If you are not using Telstra, and you plan to have a Voda service, perhaps best not to purchase the HTC10

      • Thank you. I think he will go on a kogan plan. ATM he is just on amasim. He rings up about twice a year. Usually uses my phone

        • HTC 10 will work with Kogan as Kogan has not switched on Voice over LTE, but they do use the Vodafone network.

But if they do switch on VOLTE (kind of a slim possibility in the future) you may experience issues with taking or making voice calls and may have to switch to another phone

  • Thank you. I will be careful as we are going to Eastern Europe and will have to be sure it works there. I really appreciate your help. I will go and bother the person at JB now I have some info.
