  • Which one is better, HTC One or HTC U Ultra?

    • +5

HTC One refers to the original HTC One (M7) released 5 years ago. Are you meaning the HTC 10?

      • +2

Sorry my bad, I mean this one, HTC 10

        • +7

In that case I would definitely go with the HTC 10.
Although if you are after weird liquid glass design and a slightly gimmicky second screen that makes the phone in general bigger there's the U Ultra?

Imo, HTC U Ultra was a flop. HTC 10 is an actual flagship contender.

  • +6

    Love this phone.

    • Hi millzy. Can you confirm if this phone has Mirrorlink in Settings?

      • +1

It doesn't show up in settings but I think it's auto enabled because 'HTC Mirrorlink' is preinstalled by default.

        • Cheers!

  • +8

Great price on a great phone.
If I was going to buy outright, this would be my pick.

  • +8

Using this phone for coming up on 2 years and I've been very happy with it - battery and performance still holding up well.

    • did you get any android updates?

      • +10

Yep! Got Android 8.0 a few months back.

        • +1

and FWIW, even got the update before Samsung's S8's did

        • On this Telstra version or an unbranded version?

        • You're kidding! I had an LG V20 and it was stuck on 7.0.

      • +5

Same here. Buttery smooth on Oreo. Updated around Feb this year.

      • +1

Yep, as above got 8.0.0 - don't think it'll get an official 9.0 release but there are always options there.

  • +7

ah, the HTC 10 - the last good HTC phone.

    • +1

I thought their best was HTC M7 with front facing speakers. They should have continued that trend

      • +5

In that case, the M8 or M9 were better iterations of that formula. But the 10 is just so well-made and still has a headphone jack…

      • The M7 was the perfect size with a great display, but the battery life and camera were garbage. Still loved mine though.

    • You've clearly never heard of the U11+.

      • +8

I have heard of it. It doesn't have a headphone jack. It fails the test.

It's also a massive scratch-magnet which the HTC 10 wasn't thanks to its anodized coating.

They really don't make'em like they used to!

  • +4

If only this was Dual sim be perfect.. Super underrated phone from couple years ago!

    • Whats th ebest phone thats dual sim atm

  • +3

had this phone and the only thing that I felt could have been a bit better is the camera. Other than that, was and still is a great phone and for this price ..awesome.

  • This seems like quite a powerful phone for the price. It doesn't look as nice as some of the newer phones though, but I think I could get over that for the price point.

  • +2

I bought this phone a year or so ago now and recommend it.. no issues other than expected battery degrade. Typing on it now.

At this price just grab it.

  • +8

HTC 10 is such a solid phone, and a true successor to the M8.

Had this phone for over 2 years now, and only replaced it a couple of weeks ago due to a couple of bugs caused by me (profanity) around with the ROM's while not really knowing what I was doing.

It's snappy, relatively light on the Android OS, easy to use 1-handed, and sturdy.
The 24bit DAC/AMP is also a godsend for those who like to use powerful headphones with their phone.

The battery life only recently started showing its age 2 years on, but it would still get me through a day of moderate usage without much issue.

The back camera is pretty good, but its best quality mode shoots in 4:3 (good if you use instagram, not so good otherwise) The front camera is pretty trash, so don't be expecting to take great selfies. Serviceable, but not a positive experience.

Would recommend this device for anyone looking for power on a budget. This phone was one of the most underrated flagships of 2016, and it's a damn shame HTC didn't push this phone harder.

Their newer flagships have left much to be desired with the u11 coming close to being a strong contender, but the omission of a headphone jack was a dealbreaker, IMO.

    • +1

so many cheap 12 mth old flagships, LG G6, V20, ZTE Axon 7, HTC 10 ……. it's a buyers market if you don't want current flagship phone, and pick one that will still get Oreo.

Just got a Xiaomi M1 A1 for the kid, but the HTC is worth the extra $100, AU charger, warranty, and band 28 for the 60GB data plan.

  • +4

    what about the software update?

    • Yeah I'd like to know about this too

      • +4

Mine got upgraded to 8.0 Oreo and December 2017 security update a few weeks ago, apparently all unlocked and all three carrier

models have received this update in Australia. Running nice and smooth with no known bugs so far.

      • +3

Upgraded mine to Oreo in February. Flawless phone.

    • +3

GSM Arena says it's upgradeable to Oreo

  • Have had this phone for 18 months, great phone but battery life has gone to shit. Good buy for $349

    • I like how it says it can charge 50% in half an hour. Is this true in real life?

      • +3

Yeah that's real. Any phone with fast charge can numbers like that on the bottom half of the battery. Charging slows right down above 70% though.

      • +1

Yes, comes bundled with a fast charger.

    • +2

depends if battery life is short due to the number of charge cycles it has done, if it was QC charged (hot) or just 2.1 amp overnight which is gentler on batteries.
Also what is running in the background , it's amazing how some apps run in the background when you think they were quit.

18 mths with daily charge is over 500 cycles ….. this is where apple users grin on the $90 battery replacement deal.

I think the life of the battery is designed around 2 years to align to end of android updates for a phone e.g end of support.

      • +1

More than likely the QC charging daily has killed it. According to accubattery the estimated capacity is 2000-2100mAh.

I run a pretty light app load, mostly screen on time and 4G/wifi usage

  • how does Snapdragon 820 compared with 660?

    • +6

Cpu wise - pretty comparable in multithreaded applications, the SD820 is still marginally faster however.
Gpu wise - SD820's Adreno 530 GPU is about 2x faster than the Adreno 512 in the 660.
In terms of power consumption, I'd assume the 660 has the edge.

Day to day usage excluding intensive games they'd probably provide about the same experience I'd imagine.
The current Snapdragon 636 used in the new Redmi Note 5 Pro is also based on the same core architecture (Kryo 260) as the SD660 and it's getting praise in the reviews I've seen for being an ideal balance of performance and power consumption (Aforementioned phone averaged 9 hours SoT with 4000mAh battery).
In comparison, I only get about 4 hours SoT on my SD820 powered phone.

      • wow. such a big difference on power consumption. i will pass SD820 then. Thanks a lot.

      • +1

What size battery on your phone with the SD820?

  • +7

Time to upgrade from M8 has finally come!

    • +3

      Just bought one. Thanks OP.

    • I love my HTC 10, but I miss the boom sound on my M8

  • +1

Typing on this. Cons? Battery life is limited to one day of usage. Fast charge makes up for that. Grab a power bank when travelling.

    • +3

Battery life is limited to one day of usage.

Not sure how much you use your phone but the only phone where I don't need to charge every day or throughout the day is the Pixel 2 XL.
Around 8-9hrs of usage (less screen on time) is normal for me.

HTC 10 is one of the best HTC phones around. Still.

      • +2

When I'm travelling and use a lot of gps and roaming internet it destroys the battery. I could drain it in four hours on roaming data easily. Yes, most phones are the same, but there are exceptions. It remains a con for all phones with standard sized batteries.

  • +2

I was seriously looking at this phone when it came out, definitely ticks all the boxes.

  • This or Moto G6. Any thoughts?

    • Also, those that have the Telstra branded version, what’s the latest OS it's running? Thanks

      • Just got mine. It runs Android 8.

        • That’s. ended up with the S9 today.

  • +1

Bought this for the girlfriend about 18 months ago and she's still very happy. Keeps up with my s7 in everything but the screen.

  • +1

Awesome phone for the price. I bought mine about 18 months ago from JB Outright. Snapdragon 820 still runs pretty well, awesome audio with built in DAC, Oreo 8.0 update came through in Feb, camera isn’t the fastest or the best, but if up give it a sec or two to focus it takes great shots and manual mode is pretty decent. Screen is decent, but doesn’t work well when looking through polarised sunglasses.

  • Does this still come with 100gb Google drive storage for 2 years?

    • +1

      I belive so

    • I did not get the 100GB offer on installation.
However I did upgrade to Oreo before logging in to Google.
Anyone get the offer on opening Google Drive?

  • Wish i didn't already have this phone so I could snap it up at this price!
Keep in mind that this is a 2 year old phone though. But in saying that, the nougat and Oreo updates came quick and didn't noticeably affect performance.
I hope, but don't expect that htc will keep supporting this phone.

Also make sure you don't get stuck with the unlocked htc 10s with Telstra firmware from jb. They get updates only when Telstra allows it, and come with bloatware.

    • +1

JB's page says "*Device is unlocked and will work on any Australian network. Device will contain Telstra Software."

So how do you not "get stuck" with it? Can you refresh stock without voiding any warranties?

      • +3

I bought mine about a year ago and got a Telstra unlocked one, i had connection issues and other problems with it and they happily swapped it with a non Telstra unlocked htc 10, which they said was the one I was supposed to initially get.

JB do sell non Telstra handsets for htc 10, and I would recommend asking if they have any of those before settling for the Telstra ones

        • +1

I see, interesting. No stock in SA, so delivery would be my only option. GSM Arena shows only two hardware versions, so the ROM would be the only difference. Should be easy enough to flash without voiding anything.

        • So the Telstra unlocked ones are a different ROM to unbranded versions? Rather than just an unbranded version plus bloat Telstra apps?

  • Thinking of going from my S7 to this. Should I for this price or give it a pass?

    • not exactly an upgrade. this phone will serve you well for a few more years if you need a phone, though.

    • The SoC was released same year as S7's. The US version of S7 uses the same SoC.

    • In the same situation, it's really a downgrade unless your S7 is dying.

No wireless charging, AMOLED screen (night time viewing is annoying), and water resistance.

It has stereo speakers but they aren't both front-facing, so it feels rather odd.

If you really had to replace at this budget range, consider the Axon 7 when it's on sale.

  • +2

I wonder if the people who complain of battery problems always use the quickcharge feature when charging their phones?
High current charging decreases charging time at the expense of degraded battery performance.

    • +1

How do you not use the quick charge feature?

My battery performance had definitely degraded, but that's made up by the fact that I can quick charge a top up my battery so quickly.

      • +1

Quick charge is normally only supported by a few chargers. Just use a 2.1amp charger to do a slower charge.

    • +1

no, mostly 'trickle' charge it from USB cable connected to my laptop @ work.

  • How’s this go for laying flat. Does it wobble when using.

    • +1

Yeah, back is slightly curved and there is a camera bump

  • +3

HTC 10 again… :) Amazing phone, great deal!

  • +1

    Bought, thank you OP.

  • Using it now. Am in Japan and got mine originalky in August 2016. Unfortunately recently (Jan, so about 1.5 years) the phone started completely dying. Like, it would be at 50% and then just shut off randomly and when I hard rebooted, maybe 4% battery life.

I managed to get a replacement with insurance through AU, however the replacement had serious digitiser issues; completely not registering touches all around the edges of the screen. Got a free replacement a week later (couple of weeks ago now) and touch wood it seems to be okay.

Both these things appeared to be common enough issues. Be aware. I paid $900 so expected more. For $350 it's a damned solid phone, with SD card expansion

    • What you can claim that through insurance? My battery died as well and I paid for a new bartery change.

      • Ahhh, this was a Japan thing. Turn out I was paying a monthly insurance thing I didn't know about (Maybe $3/mth) with my provider, AU, and I got a replacement phone for maybe $40. The second replacement was free because the first replacement was borked from day one.

Edit: Check info about the Australian Consumer Law and phones though. I am pretty sure 2 years is now considered normal to seek repairs. I haven't been in Aus for a while but I recall reading something like that.

  • Device is unlocked and will work on any Australian network. Device will contain Telstra Software.

What Telstra software is this referring too?

    • The boot screen is Telstra branded and there are couple of Telstra apps (you can disable most of these apps).

  • +1

Many thanks to those who praised this phone. Bought one and OS within a week. With TRS comes to $285.

    • -2

      Whats trs

      • Travelers Refund Scheme. Minimum spend $300 and Depart Australia Within 30 days. Claim the GST back. Must present the item at the airport with tax invoice. Divide the price by 11 to get the GST refund. My maths was wrong. I purchased with woolworths giftcard (-5%) hence my overall cost $300

      • -2

Who would downvote that you loser lol

  • How is the music/sound recording quality compare between this one and the LG G6? I'm really torn between these two phones. Any help is appreciated!

    • You want to record music using the phone?….

      • yeah?

        • +2

          Using the in-built microphone?

…assuming you just wanna record events and stuff that you go to…the HTC 10 does an awesome job. There's no distortion, it's really clear.

edit: ok, maybe my recollection of the event was a bit cloudy: https://youtu.be/pnw8uWs_ioM Still, much better than previous phones

edit2: hmmm, just watched the video again, not sure why it uploaded as 360p…

edit3: ok, it was crappy quality because I'd recorded it through WhatsApp instead of the native app. Here's something from Roger Waters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH8EtLUrsfU

        • @LlamaLlamaLamp: thanks mate

  • BTW, if you dig around, you may be able to get JB Hifi gift cards for 5% off. I recently discovered I can through Red Energy rewards; others may be able to through work.

    • +1

Or you can just get discounted woolies egiftcards to buy a jb gift card in store :)

  • +1

Thanks OP! I just purchased this to replace my 2012 iPhone 5 (finally)
