  • tempting, i will give it a day to consider… love my sonos

  • Does anyone know if these new 'Alexa' Sonos systems are compatible with the older Sonos? In other words, if I buy at least one new Play 1, will my older Sonos recognise the command and play Alexa through those speakers?

    • If you’ve already grouped the speakers, then the music will play on the older speakers. But I don’t think they’ve yet allowed you to send music via Alexa to the older speakers, you’ll have to manually do that through the app.
EDIT: I stand corrected. Just tested, it sort of works, but not all the time.

    • I dont see why not, you will just tell Alexa to play X in the Y room.

You won't just magically be able to talk to the older Sonos speakers though.

Yes, that will work! You just have to enable the Sonos skill with Alexa. Then you can control the other rooms via the Sonos one

    • If you have play 1's already, wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy an echo dot & enable the Sonos skill?
Unless, of course, you are after the future release of AirPlay 2…

    • The only thing that older won't do is airplay 2

  • Alexa was turned on for these the other day.
I’ve only played a little but my initial impressions are that Alexa seems slower to respond than my Echo Dot (perhaps taking 2-3 seconds to respons), and that it’s maybe slightly less sensitive to the Alexa wake word. Also the Sonos “bleep” that acknowledges your wake up word sometimes can get in the way of your command.
I’m hoping the teething issues are still being worked on but I think it’s fair advice to not buy something in the hope of what it will be in the future.
That all being said this is a good upgrade on the Play:1, especially with AirPlay 2 coming later in the year, and potentially Google Assistant too.
This bundle is a good price. I got 2 for $476 after the HN $100 cashback late last year.

  • Yeah also waiting for the AirPlay 2 upgrade

    • Sonos has confirmed the Sonos One, PlayBase and Play:5 will all be AirPlay 2 compatible via software update.

    Don't forget cashrewards

Looking forward to Airplay 2 but only on the newer models (touch sensitive) Playbase, Play One, and Play 5.

Note that Alexa don't support Apple Music, so there will be no voice control if using Apple Music.

    • Thanks for the tip - added to OP

Sorry that's the Play1 not Sonos One

  • Google support will also be added in 2018

  • Just bought a pair of these. 6% off with RACQ JB Hi Fi gift cards.

Had a weekend party with one inside and another outside. Worked really well.

Will be setting them up with a Sonos play bar shortly.
