Konka 55" 4K HDR OLED Smart TV $1779 Delivered @ Kogan (Pre-Sale)

62

Release date is set as May 15th.

  • 4k 10-bit HDR 120 Hz panel (60 Hz support only)
  • HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, USB 2.0
  • Konka brand, BOE panel
  • very basic Android OS; air mouse in remote

Panel manufacturer would appear to be BOE given they have a huge partnership with Konka, but neither site mentions a panel with these specifications right now. Konka have been making OLED products since 2014, but I defer to others on OzB as to their quality.

In terms of smart features, seems to just have a slightly souped-up Android (not Android TV), with Apitode store pre-installed, an air mouse in the remote and pretty disappointing dual-core SoC powering it all. I doubt that this is certified for Netflix and Stan, so don't expect 4k HDR from either service via the in-built OS.

TL;DR version: you're buying this unit for the 2017-era panel, so wait for reviews, and probably a discount.

    100" ?

    • 55"; title updated

  • I have a Kogan TV with a BOE panel. It's acceptable. A bit of light bleed, and a little bit washed out. Mine's a 49" 4K TV for $700 or so. You get what you pay for. I'm happy with it.

    • OLED or LCD?

      • +2

        OLEDs don't get light bleed.

        • -5

          My question was rhetorical.

  • +8

    no. just no.

    • +1

Yep, and you can get an LG B7 for around the same price, so why?

Gonna neg, OP why you post for then?

Because it's starting at the discounted price for an LG, and will likely drop lower. Seems to be a similar panel build too based on specs.

        • +1

Considering the LG TV comes with better hardware that can actually do 120hz, they're not the same thing.

This isn't really a deal, it's just the first budget OLED. It's not automatically a deal.

        • Well, maybe when it does drop lower it will become a deal. Right now, not so much

        • @freefall101:
Is this 120hz your talking about "smooth mothion", or is it that the HDMI input supports it do display at a certain resolution?

        • @freefall101: the 2017 and 2018 have zero means of accepting 4k/120Hz…

The 2018 can stream 120 fps video using its internals, and both can do 1080p/120 Hz, but that's it.

        • @jasswolf:

This Konka 55" can't do any resolution at 120Hz, it's limited to 60 the whole way through. With LG it's simply a limitation of HDMI 2.0, for the Konka TV it's some limitation from their display or hardware.

          @chyawala:

The LG can do 1080p at 120hz (or 120 fps) which personally I find nicer for gaming than 4k at 60hz. Good if you have a gaming PC or Xbox One X hooked up to your TV. To be fair though not many people will notice but I just figure calling this a "bargain" because it's cheaper than the B7 is misleading - the LG B7 can do things that the Konka screen can't. The B7 also consumes a third of the power.

        • @freefall101: I'm pretty clear that this is simply flagging a new entrant, but point taken with that and the 1080p debate.

I'd be shocked if that power consumption figure was correct, because it's higher than most LCD TVs.

  • Konka? I remember them from ultra-budget tv's some 20 years ago.

    • +4

It’s an easy target for Aussie vernacular; ‘my Konka went all kinky when it konked out.’

  • I wouldn't trust BOE's OLED. Just imagine how soon it will die or start to burnin… (that's if they actually make large sized OLEDs which I don't think so, this TV is most likely using LG's panel)

    • Lol LG,s are even starting to burn in by the looks of it .

      http://www.afr.com/technology/have-burnin-problems-appeared-…

      • All OLEDs burn in in various time periods. It's a natural characteristic of the technology as it's made with organic material.

        • In time will be understandable but a year old :/

        • I bought an LG OLED from JB HiFi (display model) and when i got it home I realised it had the most horrendous burn in right in the middle of the screen.

Put up a all pink background and the front and centre was a pretty solid blue splotch. You could also vaguely make out the on screen control burnt in to one side as well.

          Got it sent back pronto!

          @SirDale:
You didn't happen to buy the 55" one from the Elizabeth Street store in Melbourne did you? 😀

I was tempted by that one until I realised how bad the centre was.

        • @tophorus:

Late reply! but yep that was the one. I didn't notice until I got it home.

Why didn't you warn me??? :-)

    • I wouldn't trust the opinion of someone who has zero hands-on experience, nor the ability to refer to anything other than marketing hype from Samsung.

      BOE do make large-scale OLEDs.

      • anything other than marketing hype from Samsung

Just because Samsung decided to use it against LG doesn't mean that's where the info is from, and doesn't mean it's not true. We all know OLED burnins are a fact so let's not go that way.

        • -2

And I'm presenting evidence that shows they're not a significant factor for most people.

You'd need to use your TV for 30 hours a week for 5 years for a chance to notice something (i.e. it depends on content and usage patterns).

It is not the same as plasma burn-in.

This doesn't really seem like much of a deal, honestly. I got my 9300E for as much recently.

    • There's no more stock of the 930 and the replacement is likely to be over $3k.

  • doesnt seem like a discount at all.

    • +2

It's not, it's presenting a new product to compete in what is a price-inflated category.

  • +1

Deal seems fine to me. TV only launches May 15th. The Sony 55x9000e released for $3000 in July and I picked mine up for $1425 about 8 months later. If this is a decent price for this panel at this stage of its life cycle then it's a legit deal. Negging it when it hasn't even been reviewed yet is a little silly (but then so would buying it). Maybe it will surprise.

  • +1

USB 2.0. That is a technological marvel.

    • Just highlighting that the system board is likely old.

  • $1779 for a homebrand OLED would rather the LG at the boxing day specials for $1699 over this thing anyday

    • I think at a discounted price of $1000 max it would be worth a punt.

    • No one's been selling the LG B7 for less than $1900 since then, so literally 5 months.

  • Gross. The LG B7 is regularly $1900 and comes down to $1700 and below at times. With the 2018 range out this will only get lower. Wouldn't touch this with a 10ft barge pole.

    • What about 15ft instead ?

      • For the right price I'd touch it without a pole of any length.

You'll get a better deal refurbished from now on, but the entire point of this post was to point out an entrant in a tightly controlled segment, not to suggest this is an outright sale price.

      • +3

I'm intrigued there is another company offering OLEDS, more competition is almost never a bad thing. Thanks OP.

  • konked in more likely

  • "Its the cheaper version of KOGAN" hahahahah i didn't know you could get any shitter.
