Thoughts on Purchases for a New Home

Hi all,

I am currently at lock-up stage of building my home and I am after some advice.

I will be purchasing quite a few items in a short time frame and am looking for the most economical way to approach this. I need a bed, dishwasher, washing machine, TV, sound bar, couches etc.

I have already grabbed a TV unit from gumtree and am willing to get more things but I’m not willing to go 2nd hand on everything (i.e. washing machine).

A friend of a friend works at Harvey Norman so I have considered approaching him to get a discount on a range of items considering I’ll likely be buying at once.

Would just like to get some thoughts around this and if anyone has an experience to share in this regard.

Cheers!

    I don't think there's any real trick to this….

Fr white goods, consider subscribing to choice magazine for a month. Some of their research on fridges, dishwashers and washing machines etc is really handy. For $14 or whatever it is, it can help you decide.

Work out what you want, research best bang for buck or however you want to approach each item.

Shop around, definitely ask your Hardly Normal mate if he can get you a good deal on bulk purchases, but I found when i did this with a mate who worked at TGG it got too awkward as I found better prices elsewhere :P

Go to a one of those home maker centres that has TGG, E&S, HN etc in one spot. You can easily play all 3 off against each other if you know what models you want and do it all within 30 mins and get a ripping deal, just be upfront and the sales people will be used to it anyway.

  • I needed some appliances for my house, I went to TGG and picked out a few appliances that I wanted and asked the sales rep for his best price. This was when TGG had 20% off ebay sales. Whatever he couldn't do for more than 20%, I bought off ebay. Perhaps you can do that when ebay has their 10% off sale next.

    • Extra ebay sales off the lowest online prices will give you the best deals.

Go for proven reliable appliances (nothing too fancy either) with good reviews. For example we purchased the Euromaid washing machine which was one of the cheapest but had great long term reviews and it hasn't skipped a beat in 3 years.

I quite like replica furniture (Glicks furniture, Matt Blatt), they look good are quite good quality and not too expensive either. Alternatively there are places that sell slightly damaged or ex display furniture for very cheap prices too.

HN has a lot of markup so we didn't buy anything from them.

  • Appliances online seem competitive. Retravision if you are in WA.

Don't forget cash rewards if you are buying online.

  • When my wife (then gf) and I moved in together we went for second hand fridge, washing machine, lounges, dining table/chairs. Saved thousands, we've since sold the lounges (purchased for $400, sold for $350 after 6 years) as we've moved twice and they didn't suit any more, but the Bosch washing machine, Westinghouse fridge and the dining room furniture are all still here and working fine. If time is on your side and you're fine for transport, obviously you can be picky about what you get from Gumtree etc and find some really good stuff.

  • Amex it up, get the reward points, pay it off in full.

What's wrong with a second hand washing machine?

    • We needed a bigger washing machine but did not want to pay close to $1000. Bought a 2 year old machine from a Facebook buy and sell site $75. Going strong 3 years on and we sold our small F & P machine for $100.

  • You have a mate at Harvey? That’s gold. My cousin worked there and he used to sell me goods at $1 above cost price.

  • get cc with 24 months interest free

  • I would just look at the best deal at the time for each individual item eg. buy them from different stores/places/websites depending on the best deal available

  • my washing machine is an LG 10kg front loader. got it when it was 3 years old (12 years ago). still going strong with 2 loads a week (3 kids).

    second hand.

if you're not in a rush, just add to your collection as you find a good deal? That's what we're doing, in anticipation of moving in in a few months. it's the only way you're going to find a bargain on most of the stuff…

  • Gumtree the bed frame if not the whole bed to start.

Couches I'd go second hand, furniture ect.

If buying fridges ect I'd buy from somewhere like appliances Online so they delivered to me, just make sure you price check and ask for a better deal.

  • Also check out display stocks for sale. I got an electrolux pyrolytic oven for 700 at the GG. Looks and work great.

    • Read mixed reviews about pyrolytic cleaning.

You have to do prep work. Eg you can't have all the trays in when you turn it on.

Do you even use that function?

  • Thanks so much all for the suggestions, really great!

  • Add Cat6 cables from main TV area to other rooms so you can add splitter later, have PP in those rooms for TVs too. Use conduit if wall mounting main TV makes it east to update HDMi cables later (like V2.1), If a 4K projector is being installed look at a Fibre Optic cable like Ruipro, run speaker cables from source to rears.
Paint garage floor before moving in, install security system at stud stage its easier to do.
