  • Can anyone tell me what "hacking" is? Also I read it has hand winding but it's automatic?

    • +10

Hacking is when the second-hand ceases movement once you pull out the winder to set the time. It helps you with setting the accuracy of the movement (i.e. stopping the second hand at exactly 12-o’clock so that the minute hand moves accurately across the markers at that point). It is pretty unusual to see both hacking and hand winding on an automatic watch at this price point.

Hand winding is there so that you can fully wind the watch without having to shake your hand around like it’s on fire for an extended period of time.

      Nice one OP.

    • +2

A hacking movement means that the second hand will stop when you pull the crown out to adjust the time.

    • +3

"Hacking" is when the second hand is paused when you pull out the crown to adjust the time, making a trivial task to set the watch to the exact minute and second. Hand winding is handy when you have more than one watch and you alternate the wearing of them. You can wind up the one you are not wearing to keep it accurate rather than having to buy a gadget to rock it or lend it to an adolescent boy…

    • +1

      Well thank you all :)

  • +1

    Great post OP.

  • +1

Can you use the Amazon20 code for $20 off for "new accounts"

    • +1

I think that code is only for Amazon AUS and OP's deal is on Amazon US.

    • Amazon20 has expired

    • Nice use of quotation marks though so +1 anyway

  • +2

Orient make great watches at affordable prices.

    Highly recommended.

  • +3

    Awesome deal OP!
You, WatchNerd and PJC are really trying to make me buy a watch, I really don't know how long I can hold out for πŸ˜‚.

    • +5

By the power vested in me it is my solemn duty to hereby absolve you of all blame and any residual guilt concerning the essential acquisition of this premium exquisite horological masterpiece.

    • +6

if you had a watch you could measure how long you can hold out for.
      good reason to get one.

      • +1

Now there's a good logical answer.

  • +2
  • how much better is this than an invicta n35a and why ?
both are rolex homage , screw down crown and wr200.

    • +2

      Just get both πŸ˜€

    • +4

The movements are comparable. The n35a is made by Seiko and Orient use their own in-house movement. However, Orient is a subsidiary of Seiko. So technically, Seiko make both movements. The Orient is better quality and will have overall better finishing and QC than the Invicta. The Invicta reputation for quality is much improved, but the Orient's is a cut above. The Orient styling is more unique, whereas the Invicta (I will assume you are talking about the Invicta 8926OB) is a clear Rolex Sub homage. I would go the Orient over the Invicta.

    • +1

i wouldn't say either orients are homages. They make distinctive design clues different from the submariner. Its a dive watch but many dive watches are not homages.

invicta shamelessly copies the submariner while the orient stands as something unique. Looking inside the watch, the in house orient movement is further evidence that orient has tried to make a watch that is of its own and not a copy.

id wholeheartedly recommend the orient. the invicta is just a replica though it is a lot of watch for its price.

      • Replica is when they pretend to be the real thing, like chinese fakes. All the others are homages.

    • Read the negative reviews on Invicta

The blue Mako is cheaper @ Watch-Code eBay but only 2 in stock -
    Orient Blue Mako II US$139.00 - $6.95 PULL5 = $132.05 shipped (~AU$176.00)

The black Ray is cheaper @ Pro-Watches eBay -
    Orient Ray II US$160.45 - $8.02 PULL5 = $152.43 (~AU$202.50)

  • +1

Sold my Ray Raven 2 (all black ray 2) because my dive watches dont get enough wear time. But the blue mako is nice… http://i.imgur.com/LQG0DqU.jpg

    • That tan colour strap goes very well with the blue dial Mako! Match your shoes too. Excellent choice! I'd definitely consider that colour when mine arrives =)

    • Where did you get the strap?

      • +1

Not my photo guys just pointing out how pretty the blue one is. Really want to get the blue one even though i dont wear dive watches often.

        • Boooo

  • +3

I bought my Blue Orient Ray II from eBay in March this year for $167 after an eBay discount code. Here it is after I put a leather strap on it https://i.imgur.com/E8IElt7.jpg

    • +1

      Rather nice.

    • +1

      What strap is that?

      • Wow, so much interest. After lots of online strap shopping I finally settled on the Vintage Winchester from WatchGecko and I'm very happy with it! The only negative was needing to punch an extra hole for my 16cm wrists.

    • +2

Very nice. Did you get the strap from cheapestnatostraps?

    • +1

Where did you get the strap?

    • +1

      Looks great!

Back in February, we had an intern show up with his daddy's Patek. I would have slapped him silly if it weren't for our country's assault laws. An Orient or a Tissot would have been acceptable.

    • +3

why do you care, pretty dumb reason to get angry about

      • -4

I care because I was his superior and was responsible for giving him a FT offer. What statement are you sending if you wear a better watch than your superior? The only statement I see is that you're proclaiming yourself as the office douchebag.

        • +2

So you had a power trip because the intern sported a cut above your class 😁

        • @sky blu: You want to look good in your job because what you wear is a reflection of your superior. But if you're running around with a 50k watch, do you seriously need this job? Looks like you'll be okay without one.

Also the benchmark to beat was an Oyster Perpetual… so pretty difficult to beat for the average intern I'd imagine.

        • +2

@JuliusSeizure: Most people won't even know what a patek is and most aren't even looking. You seem a bit insecure and even jealous, you should probably be giving more attention to the job he is doing not the fact that his watch is more expensive than yours :)

        • -2

@Your Friend: To all those who are whining and downvoting my posts, grow a pair of testes. If you knew me intimately, I would move heaven and earth to get a great intern a FT offer. There must be something seriously wrong with you if you think its okay to wear a Patek as an intern. I could go on and on about what crappy interns do - this was one point of many. I understand there is a young demographic of users in their uni years on Ozbargain. Hopefully they will take this piece of advice to heart so that they can carry themselves maturely and professionally once they hit the workforce. And to you whiners - your riffraff and attempts at trolling has been key to why there has been a lack of quality posts on Ozbargain. Congratulations!

        • @JuliusSeizure:

How do you know they weren’t a great intern? Amusingly short sighted to judge them based on a watch, considering it sounds like if you were offering them a FT position they interviewed well. How do you know it wasn’t a family heirloom passed down?

        • +1

          @JuliusSeizure:

But if you're running around with a 50k watch, do you seriously need this job?

Just because ones parents are loaded don't mean one could just sit on their backside and just spend spend spend.

Also don't mean they won't work hard either. Granted some spoiled rich brats will do as you have mentioned and do eff all at work.

Guy i was working with his parents are loaded only they live overseas. He could just live ritchie rich life here and not work but you see government tends to start questioning how one could afford all the stuff he could buy and has bought with no job.

Like an apartment in sydney cbd, a sports car and countless expensive gadgets.

Works as hard if not harder than your average guy who rents out in the burbs. Another guy i work with. So not every rich kid is like what say you at all.

Judge them by their character not by what watch they wear.

    • +1

What's it to you? Please explain why an Orient or Tissot would have been more acceptable.

  • Loving the Pepsi mako 2. That or the sieko Pepsi SKX009 for $280ish ? $80 more.
    Are they both similar ?

    • +1

My Orient Mako II Pepsi is on the way. If you asked member WatchNerd or ilikeit they'd say the Seiko SKX.

Both are great watches so just pick the one that appeals to you most. Go with your heart!

      • Thanks mate ! Well done on the purchase ! I'm about to do the same I think.. I noticed the bezel of the Orient may slip under shirt cuffs easier so swaying towards that.

Hope the wife doesn't notice a new watch on my wrist… Otherwise will cop it

        • +1

          It'd be worth it! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

        • +1

          @sky blu:

went back and forth many times..in the end bought the SKX009 from creation watches ebay for $274 + 5% ebay code.

          cheers

        • +3
        • @Nav2k: you could have got that at a better price, but what matters is you made up your mind and went for what you like! πŸ‘

sky blu - This is Ozbargain, please hand in your membership.

        • +3

          @sky blu:
Lol aww crap ! Haha thanks anyway lol.

          Handing in membership now :(

Bought the Mako II 4 years back from Amazon. Awesome watch. Has been my daily wear watch and i'd highly recommend it.

  • +1

I already have a watch. stop making me buy more !!!!!!!!!!!!

    • +1

Just one more. Your secret is safe with us :)

  • Great watch at a good price. Wish we could easily purchase the Mako USA II here in Australia for a reasonable price.

    • What is a Mako USA II?

      • +1

It's like a better version of the Mako II, but only sold on the Orient USA website. It's got a sapphire crystal and some other differences. Great watch, but doesn't feel right paying RRP for it (after all we're on OzB).

        Link to it: https://www.orientwatchusa.com/shop/mens-watches/saa0200bd9/

        • Good to know. Looks like a blend between the Ray and Mako II. Price is too dear anyway.

  • Does the Ray II also have hand-winding and hacking?

  • Also, are blue faces more desirable/rarer than black faces? Or is it that it goes with a wider variety of bands?

    • +1

Yass the Orient Ray II also have hand-winding and hacking. I wouldn't say the blue dial is more desirable than the black version - it is subjective and just comes down to personal preference. Just go with the one you like most!

      • Thanks for that. I like this model, but t's a shame it doesn't have a see-thru back like some of the other models I've seen - they look cool!

        • +1

Yeah the skeleton back would be awesome. I bought the Mako II Pepsi and tracking says it will be delivered on May 21! Yay!

  • Hey watchnerd I really liked the orient pepsi mako, and thinkg of buying it as my first mechanical (non quartz) watch. I am new to good watches. Today I saw in train a guy wearing a nice watch of brand Tissel, looked jut like the green rolex submariner. Is it a good brand to buy, the watch looked very well made and if it is can you find deals.
