Travel Adaptor - AUS to Japan

Hi Everyone,

I am struggling to find an adaptor which has a 3 pin AUS to a 2 pin Japan. I have found heaps of 2 pin AUS to 2 pin Japan.

The reason I need a 3 pin AUS is because my laptop charger has a 3 pin.

Can anyone share where I can buy one? Or do you know of any way I can use my laptop in Japan? :(

Flying to Japan in a few days!!

Thanks!

  • Try any shop that sells luggage? Myer, Strandbags and places like that should all sell travel adaptors.

    • I have but I can’t find any with 3 pin AUS to 2 pin Jap.
They are usually 2 pin AUS to 3 pin Jap, OR 3 pin Aus to 3 pin Jap.

      Thank you though!!

      • Apparently this works well.

Lots of discussion here as well. Good luck!

Japan doesn't have a three pin. It's also 110v outlets so there is a chance your laptop charger won't work there.

Eg. Our phone/tablet chargers work and recharge devices, but our electric toothbrush doesn't charge in Japan as it's not 110v rated.

    • I had the same issue with my electric toothbrush.

    • When I travel I revert to a manual toothbrush - no trouble with voltage incompatibility or flat batteries. It also takes up less room. I figure I can go with it for the short time I'm travelling.

It's actually 100 V in Japan and it would be a rare laptop adaptor or phone charger that would not work on it. Have a look at the fine print on the adaptor. Their input range is normally 90 v - 250 V.

If you can't figure this simple thing out you should not even be leaving Australia.

  • https://www.gadgets4geeks.com.au sell Skross world travel adapters that will work but they're not cheap.

  • Just stating the obvious - if the cable for a device has an earth pin, you'd want to be very careful using it unearthed. That is exactly the reason why these adaptors are not sold in Australia. I understand there's not usually an issue with laptops (because they are double insulated) but worth checking.

If your charger has the double-square or GS/VDE logo, I think that's OK (I'm not an expert though):

  • I use one like this https://www.kathmandu.com.au/media/catalog/product/6/1/61461_adapter_japanv2_b_000.jpg
that accepts my 3-pin Aussie to plug into the 2-pin Japan socket and the Aussie power pack
now knows it's only getting 110v and it automagically adjusts…

Try Reject Shop / Crazy Clarkes type places for KOJO brand plugs, usually around $7.

Alternatively, when u land, go to Don Quixote to pick up a cheap adapter.

  • The $5 adaptors from OfficeWorks all have three pins on the Australian side, and they're well made. They don't specifically list a Japanese adaptor, but I think it's the same as the two pin USA plug, isn't it?

  • Daiso??

  • better hope it doesnt short and kill you.

  • I had the same problem. I just ended up snapping off the earth pin from the laptop cord. I had a spare cord so it wasn't a big deal. Used it in Japan with no issues. If you don't want to wreck your laptop cord you could buy a cheap double adaptor and snap off the earth pin from that.

  • This might be what you are after, the radio parts also mentions Japan as one of the countries.

Radio Parts has no stock but they seem to sell their products through a number of vendors so you might be in luck

  • Buy in Japan when you arrive.

  • In Japan now. We had the same issue and just bought one from Bic Camera when we got here. Can confirm it's a AU 3 pin to JP 2 pin.

  • I just cut the bottom pin off my adaptor - I think I used a US adaptor? So 3 pin aus side, 3 pin US side, chop off the bottom plug

Any 3 -> 2 adaptors will effectively do the same thing

  • You can get the multicountry ones which will have the option yo change it out. Alternatively bring a powerboard and get an adapter at the airport if you need more info happy to help

  • I just bought a Jaoanese laptop cord when I went there, rather than using an adapter.
