Best Sim for 1 Month in Europe

I will be away for a month for whole of August. Current 1 year plan with Kogan expires the day I leave. I don't need much data (most hotels have free wifi) but I'll need a few calls while I'm there and a few calls back here. Last time I bought at the airport which was a bit of a flop and didn't really do what i wanted. Landing in Munich and will need something from then to cover EU for rest of trip. I have a cheap 12 month Aldi sim for when I get home.

I just got a Vodafone sim from a Vodafone store when I landed. It worked all over Europe with their free coverage checker.

3 UK have good sims with good data and calls for Europe. There was a place at Sydney airport that you could buy it from, otherwise try online.

  • I looked up the Lycamobile plans in Europe and they seem to be quite affordable, with the first month 50% off bonus. Not too sure how accessible it is to buy the sims.

  • Tschibo is a nice coffee and homewares shop all over Germany and they also do a sideline in pretty cheap SIMs. For a month I found their 5.5GB SIM (Plan L - see https://is.gd/HHwQcT ) pretty good. An advantage of getting their sims is you can buy it direct in one of their shops. If your phone isn't too complicated, and you can get over the language barrier, the shop assistant might help you configure it in your phone on the spot. If not they have helped me before ring through to their IT help desk from the shop to sort it - I used their 5GB SIM in a more complicated device.

Alditalk is in Germany too but you need to buy the sim in the store and self help with what they have online to set it up in a phone.

    • Thanks davidg444-this might be the way for me to go. My German is a bit rough but should be OK to get me by! I'm not going to UK this trip and bulk of trip in Germany, so was looking for a 'local' deal. I have an iphone6 so should be fairly common? I have bookmarked that page :)

      • Iphone ist ganz beliebt. Viel Spaß und eine gute Reise

  • I used an Ortel one a couple of years ago which was cheap and worked well. You have to order the card from Germany and then set up online which was tricky until google translate came to the rescue. Once set up you can add extra data etc.

Looks like they've added another level of trickiness with a video chat now required to activate (see link).
