Buying a Puppy from a good breeder

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on a good breeder or place to find a puppy?

I am after a small dog:

Yorkshire Terrier or long haired Chihuahua.

I have looked at animal shelters and not seen any I like.

I refuse to go to pet shops - I think they should be illegal.

Cheers,

I could ask a reli who is a vet where they got their dog from. I think it was from breeders, yes. Do you know any vets? You could ask them for suggestions.

Hi, sorry for the delay, my vet reli lives in QLD, fortunately water didn't get in their home. This was the reply if you are after a pedigree pup.

"Check the website Dogzonline. Those are reputable breeders, but still do talk to the people involved
and see if they are the type of people who take particular care of their dogs/charges. Breeders who are registered with the canine control councils (or equivalents) are probably a safe bet."

I see thatdogzonline's already been seconded by JV.

If you are not after a particular breed:

"If they are after a pup, could always go check out welfare organisations or pounds. I've heard that those pups are usually quite grateful for second chances and often make excellent pets."

      HTH.

      • Thanks for going the trouble, really appreciate it!

  • Hi

Could you please ask for any references for a Labrador - price range too please.

    Thank you.

There are so many Labs in animal shelters

      • Thanks. There are certainly a lot more Labs this weeks from last week. We personally would prefer to adopt one than to buy from a breeder. Been to RSPCA Burwood a few times. Being school holidays, dogs come and go fast.

Best to contact a breeder club nearest to you and ask for a recommendation…

Breeders that are members of clubs, in general, take care of their pets better and can give you better advice…

    • I have noticed that the breeders charge 3 times as much as what you can find on the trading post etc

probably because you are getting a dog with a known genetic history, so less risk of problems…

Also, members of clubs do not generally overbreed their dogs as do people who run puppy farms, so costs are higher for each dog…

when we got our dog from the breeder, we saw our dog's parents and knew it would have a good temperament…

        • Thanks JV

Probably because the animals have been quality fed, from better breeding stock, are vaccinated, and are more likely to be socialised. You'll also likely get a lot more support down the line should something not be right with your little pal.

Avoid puppy farms people! For your own sake and the animals.

          • 1 for no puppy farms

Good advice. IMHO, most backyard breeders would not tell you or would not know of any known genetic conditions (which are common in pure breeds) of the dogs they breed. And often backyard breeders do not provide you with registered paperwork, so it is difficult to authenticate the pedigree.

Safest bet is to find your puppy through a breeder's club/association. From experience, most registered breeders are often very knowledgeable and they are always happy to help if you have any queries or concerns down the line. You may also save quite a bit on vet bills in the long term. :)

  • Just to say:
Pure Breed: higher chance of deformities due to inbreeding
Mixed Breed: low chance of deformities
if you are to buy from the breeder best to check their parents and also their living conditions(because puppy mills do not care about the dog itself just about the money making business)

Save a life, buy from a shelter.

Do you have an animal welfare league (rescue dogs) or similar where you are? I would recommend going to somewhere like that.

I am glad you are avoiding the pet shops. They should be ashamed of themselves. They know where these puppies come from and the conditions they live in but continue to want to make a buck at the expense of the animal's wellbeing.
