Recommendations for a new phone

Hi All,

I'm looking for some recommendations for a new mobile phone. I've always been an iPhone user, though don't mind Android etc..

My current iPhone 6 64gb is still going alright, but really starting to struggle with heavy work usage these days. I would prefer something around about the same dimensions, maybe a little larger if what's out there is the better option over other models and 128gb + storage/micro SD slot.

Flexible with the budget.

Appreciate the recommendations!

Cheers!

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is well regarded or the iPhone X if you prefer the iOS ecosystem, often because of iMessage.

    S9+

  • I switched from an iPhone 6S to a Samsung S9 from that recent JB deal. My main criteria was a micro SD slot, good camera, no notch and a head phone jack. The S9 fits the bill.

The curved screen took a few days to get used though and I find Android Auto to be a better experience than CarPlay.

Hard to beat a Chinese phone for price. Maybe try these…

    $199 Xiaomi Mi A1 4GB 5.5" 32GB Global Version https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/376950
    $467 Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 5.99" IPS/ 6GB RAM/ 64GB https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/377086
    $750 Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s 5.99" 6GB/128GB Dual Sim https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/377092

Screen size is bigger than an iPhone but IMHO that's a good thing.

The Mi A1 is incredible value.

I think Sharp Aquos S2 is significantly better for less though ie. better screen, NFC, B28 was/is ~$210 Joybuy

        • Those things are nice but I value Android One higher.

  • I like the Samsung S8. A lot cheaper now that the S9 has come out. Otherwise the Note 8. Just an awesome phone.

  • Safe option, Samsung S9+ or Note 8

  • Nubia z17 mini - all bands plus NFC. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on that. There's a good deal on eBay atm with the discount code applied.

  • I would recommend another iPhone, you get 2 years warranty if purchased in Australia compare to an Android usually come with 1 year only.

For repair/warranty claim, Apple stores are also more accessible than to Samsung/other stores.

    • As a HUGE iPhone fan, that's simply not true. Apple devices come with 1 year warranty extendable to 2-years with AppleCare which you have to pay for. All devices, both Apple and others have 2 years cover under ACL.

Samsung do have stores in CBDs, in fact the Sydney one is nearly opposite Apple's store but certainly Apple support is usually better than most others.

Having said all that, I can't see someone going from an iPhone 6 to some cheap Chinese product but possibly an S9.

      • Shouldn't you still get statutory warranty?

Er … ACL is a statutory right.

        • @Diji1: Yeah I meant after the 2 years

      • that's simply not true. Apple devices come with 1 year warranty

        • Apple's warranty on products is ONE year. They comply with 2 years statutory warranty under ACL. There are minor differences between the 2 warranties but they are not the exact same thing.

Apple warrants the Apple-branded iPhone, iPad, iPod or Apple TV hardware product and the Apple-branded accessories contained in the original packaging (“Apple Product”) against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with Apple's published guidelines for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser ("Warranty Period").

    • Becareful of privacy leak

      • It's Android, if it's not the Chinese it's the Americans.
But yeah there is the possibility that the rom has been tampered with.
