Going to South Korea

Hi,
I am going south korea from ADELAIDE in mid July about 7-10 days. I have 2 options 1. I go myself only or 2. Go with wife n 20 months baby. I want to go with my baby and wife but worried about her food and weather.
If i go with baby or without baby i need suggestions for cheap and nice hotel in Seoul, good deal airfare and planning to rent a Car as well. Any difference in driving rules/ roads/ traffic between ADELAIDE and South Korea?

  • Fresh fruit can be quite expensive.

    • That's not really a holiday worry..

      • It is if you like a daily dose of fruit.

        • No, it's still not an issue. If you can't handle spending $10 instead of $5, then you shouldn't be going to Korea.

There are plenty of places where Korea sells cheaper fruit. In desserts, in smoothies, etc. just don't expect the other components to be healthy.

  • Lots of questions - sounds like you should start with a travel agent.

Lol so you going on a holiday, with or without your family? whichever more convenient ?

Seriously dude? if you worried about food and weather ? why book the ticket in first place? perhaps try somewhere you know first?

They drive on the wrong side of the road.

Though i have no road driving experience in SK, but i have been in a taxi lots of times in SK. Please be extremely careful. SK has a high rates of road fatalities and accidents. Drivers are very aggressive and careless. Drivers will literally speed and drive in the middle of two lanes. Traffic is also horrible as well almost all day except late nights on a week day.
However they are very cheap! A 40 minute ride in heavy traffic only costed $15 and they are LITERALLY EVERYWHERE. So maybe consider that instead to get around?

  • kimchee guesthouse busan. ive stayed a few times.

you'll find baby food in supermarkets.

Prices are similar to australia for clothes and electronics. Im surprised how electronics online are cheaper in Australia (i.e. umart). Markets are full of food and stuff you'll never buy, but you can buy some awesome ingredients. I'd go to an asian grocer and see what they have, and try and buy things you cant get locally. like sauces, seasoning and stuff that will survive the trip home. i bought an awesome pancake frypan from emart, for about $15AUD and its the best thing ive bought in korea.

eat all the chicken and hotteok. Watch Mangchi on youtube for some cooking and personality inspiration, shes lovely

    • OP: Don't stay in any guesthouse that has the words Kimchi or Kpop in it. Unless you really like weird people.

Higher demand so more supply. People in Korea don't build PCs, and if they do, they build 50 at a time for a PC bang.

This. Those are great tourist foods.

Try a street food stall just once, they're not that good and they're all the same usually.

  • When you say South Korea, I'm assuming you're going to Seoul. Anyways, July is going to be very hot, it's right smack in the middle of summer so you're gonna need things like portable fans for your baby. Food (street food, restaurants, cafes etc) and shopping (clothes and cosmetics) are generally reasonably priced. As for what the previous commenter said about fruits, if you're not buying fruits baskets/fruit gift sets, then it's usually not that expensive. Since you sound like you have never been to Korea before, I would recommend for you to stay in touristy areas like Myeongdong and Gangnam, both on the opposite sides of the river, depending on what you're looking for. Myeongdong is generally more crowded and livelier and while Gangnam is still tolerable. For cars, they drive on the left side of the road and the drivers there are scary, they can switch between 3 lanes just like that. Buses, taxis, and subways are affordable too, just avoid the peak periods if you don't want to get squashed.

      Huh?

No. Unless you need portable fans in Australia, which 99% of people don't.

No. Stay anywhere in Seoul, those places are just more expensive. The subway extends throughout every corner of Seoul and finding hotels shouldn't be hard.

      Myeongdong == Chinese tourists
Gangnam == Kinda-rich Koreans trying to flash wealth

Both have horrible food options but are great for just walking and seeing.

Leave the wife and kid at home. Taking the wife to Seoul would be like taking ice to the eskimo's.
Just go to Itaewon and stay in some cheap flop house. Play all night and sleep all day.

      lol +1 this ^

    • This is cringey sexpat stuff.

There's a reason why Koreans hate foreigners who live in Seoul, because the congregate around this piss and shit hole.

OP: Don't go to Itaewon. It's made for dumb foreigners and weird US Military.

  • You will love it. I would take baby & wife. Seoul is lovely and people are very nice. Just have travel I surance if you can.

If you can’t afford travel insurance then you can’t afford to travel.

  • You're planning on renting a car in Korea?

Rent it outside Seoul or you're going to be paying a lot of car damage premiums. You might think I'm joking, but if you don't know how to drive defensively, very defensively, don't drive there.

Edit: You can get around the entirety of Korea for cheap and fast. No car is ever really needed.

  • I don't see any reason why you'd want to rent a car. Korea has some of the best public transport in the world and stupidly easy to use.
