Facebook Market Place Scam Sending out Parcel before Payment Received

This was just happened on 9th May 2018, I have a fragrance for sale on Facebook. A guy approached me via Facebook messenger not too long after, I ended up with a deal of $136.50 for the fragrance and he will asked to be shipped express for him as he need it urgent ( gift purpose )

He asked me to give him my bank details and will make a transfer. A bank receipt (screen capture) has been sent to my messager and I thought it all done and sent out the parcel the afternoon .

At the night I checked my account and found that the transfer screen shout does not has conformation number,I messaged him straight way he responded quickly .and replied : “Its just stating that it may take 1 buisness day i work as a teller in westpac in nelson bay due to your bank being a different branch it can take 1 to 2 buisness days unless direct deposit is made in this case i have made sure that it is next day it is scheduled to go in your account by the the 9th meaning tomorrow this is also due to the stature of my account i hold working in the branch”

I have been patient and waited for the payment to be clear and missed the chance to trace the parcel back. The parcel delivered the next day and payment stil not cleared. I messaged him again and he promised payment has been sent and refuse to send me the confirmation number. After few message he blocked me to contact him .

I reported him to Facebook but I think it’s usedless
I have him name ; bank account number and Facebook photo
Can I put his detail here ?

I know it is not a big amount. Just would like to notice other people not to send parcel until payment clear .
I can’t believe there are so many scammer and been very upset 😡

UPDATE: I sent message to scammer ‘s friends and also to the scammer and get respond very quick Claimed that account has been used by “someone else “ and be wrote all a declare to his face book to ignore my message !
This is what is expected he’s repond : Hi i hqve just written this for everyone to see i do not appreciate you messaging my friends on facebook with such accusations of myself and my partner that is actually against the law if you must know.it is called defamation of character tp post on public forums and message people about us is illegal my advice would be to stop messaging others with our names and to not write public posts either

My.wife had replied to you the other.day stating the same.thing im about to write this is now.the first i have heard of it from you someome has stolen our profile identities and has got a hold.of other details i have also warned the post office thankyou for letting us know!

I am actually really sorry this has happened to you but please do not take this out on us by you posting false claims.or asking my friends it makes us look like disgusting people when we have done nothing wrong“

Similar scams have been posted here every now and again.
To cut it short, there is pretty much nothing you can do now.

    In the future:
Never send out goods before money is actually in your account.
Treat all screen shots as fake and only check with your own phone/computer.

    • +1

I will never send out anything without cleared payment . Thank you .

  • Did you call Westcrap, Nelson Bay and ask to speak to the person?

The "stature" of his account has no bearing on when a transaction is process. That aside, inter-bank transfer typically take a day to process, intra-bank transfer are typically instantaneous.

    • +1

      Doh, guarantee is all lies

    • Thank you for the tips ;I tried search the buyer’s name and found his another account , I message the account and get responded by the people metioned their ‘s name and photo has been stolen. It’s been 3 business days and there is no payment in my account .

      • +5

        there is no payment

    • I did leave a question on Westpac Nelson bay webside ( google search )

  • +28

you are an idiot for posting the item

    • +20

      Harsh but accurate

      • Sad, but it's true, though (it's true, though)

    • +2

And I suppose you consider it your duty as someone whose never made a mistake to make him feel bad about that?

Because people who aren't born geniuses, or those that hold the naive belief that if they act honestly others will too, deserve to be humiliated and ground down into the dirt, don't they altomic?

      • +2

It doesn’t take a genius to know not to send out a parcel until the money is in your account

        • +2

You'd be surprised. The amount of things "everybody knows" that can trip you up is far more than any one person can know.

When someone calls someone else an idiot with no provocation or goal, it says more about them than anything else. In the case above, he's actually worried that he's not as smart as he thinks. His sense of confidence is wrapped up in a self perception of being an intelligent person, so this is a real threat. Rather than confront those feeling of inadequacy, its easier to push someone else down.

In his mind (and those who upvoted him probably), he's saying "You're so stupid! I would never have made that mistake. In a group of the two of us, you're the dumb one, and I'm the smart one!"

What he fails to realize is that it was never a competition. You don't win by making others lose. The best you'll ever achieve using that strategy is to become king of the dungheap

It should be obvious, but this scamming thing is still relatively new. 10 years ago, there was a lot more trust out there.

The biggest problem is that big commercial enterprises, like banks and Facebook, don't want to hammer home these scams, because it makes them look bad.

  • +9

Sorry, but screenshots are absolutely worthless. You can fake them in html or photoshop.

What makes you think his bank details or photo are legit?

    • I am quite stupid ; the Mother’s Day is this Sunday and buyer request to send express post ; i did get bank payment before with the secreen shot and had no problem get payment received. I just don’t believe A personal has such high education qualifications will scam on real life ; sorry my English is poor .

      • +1

        $136 isn't the most expensive lesson. :)

Try google mapping the mailing address.

        • I have the addres but 3hours away from my home by driving
not sure what to do even I have all buyer ‘s address name account number photo …

          @Stayhereyou: Vietnamese gangs

      • how do you know he is highly educated?

        • If the Facebook information is real — It stated : March brothers renovations studies at Macquarie university. I have never had a chance attendance at university. And I can see he’s well educated through the message he replied on the messenger.

        • @Stayhereyou:

If this is pasted exactly as he wrote it:

“Its just stating that it may take 1 buisness day i work as a teller in westpac in nelson bay due to your bank being a different branch it can take 1 to 2 buisness days unless direct deposit is made in this case i have made sure that it is next day it is scheduled to go in your account by the the 9th meaning tomorrow this is also due to the stature of my account i hold working in the branch”

You are wrong. He's akin to the remedial class kids you may have known at school.
Who have flourished in politics in recent times, it seems.

        • @Speckled Jim: he responded politely and make me not to trace back the parcel . And he promised payment will clear in my bank 1-2 business days. However I didn’t receive any cents .

        • @Stayhereyou:

A halfwit writing polite gibberish is still a halfwit. On the other hand, they're practically selling degrees to halfwit punters, thus eroding their value.

I'm sorry you were deceived by a halfwit.

So, with all the other posts on this forum saying almost the exact same thing, you went ahead and sent it anyway without the money in your account.

And I’m sure FB couldn’t care less. It was probably a throw away account and they would have warnings up about “use at your own risk”…

  • Both account has same photo and updated on similar time . Maybe one for the buyer and another one for his wife . His wife respond me as :”Oh. Ok 😕
I’ll have to report this, it looks like someone has been stealing mine and my husbands photos and using our names. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.”

  • +1

If you shipped it to a street address then do a check the address matches the name. If so threaten to spread his name and address across a number of platforms as a scammer, also tell him you are reporting him to the cops etc. you probably won’t get far but he might bite.

    • Yes
There is a match address — it’s a house ( I am not sure is it illegal to spread his information due to the privacy )

      • Start with the threat and I would go to the police. You have been robbed and they can, at least, advise you.

        • I did. He blocked me on Facebook and I found another Facebook account with same name and photo . I messaged that accounted and get replied by a woman “ maybe his wife” metioned that the their and address had been used by other people

        • @Stayhereyou: I would still go to the cops and report this. The package was sent to the house so somebody must have picked it up. If the house, and accounts, have been used by other people then it is in the homeowners interest to get this sorted - if it is the people themselves then the cops arriving will put the wind up them. You might also want to notify the bank where the account was from, because if it is a fake account then this is also fraud. People get away with these things because people just chalk these things up to experience. This will probably get nowhere but, at least, you feel like you have done what you can to stop these people. At least it wasn't a huge amount.

Unfortunately there are some scumbag people in this world.

        • I just tried send message to the second Facebook account I found with same name and photo , it showed the person not able to receive the message . So I am sure it’s same person . The account and name not stolen by other people. The couples are in the same boat .
I will give all information to my local police station .

        • @Stayhereyou:
Use facebooks spamming/"you may know" features. Try and find the user profile from a different account and look at their friend list, look for relatives. Poke around enough and Facebook provides a trail to associated accounts. Contact their friends with something like.
"Sorry to bother you. I found you through your friend "xx". I have lost contact with "xx", I really hope you could pass on a message to "xx" that the payment for the item that "xx" purchased from me did not go through. I like to think this was a genuine mistake, but a lot of people do tend to scam. Could you let them know to contact me at "blah.blah". If the situation is not resolved I will have to ask the police to get involved."

Put it on your timeline, and ask anyone who knows them to pass on the message, that way if you send a friend request to contact the thief's friends they will probably have a look at your public timeline before accepting your request.
Give the thiefs friends the basic contact details of the thief, give the family and relatives all the details including the delivery address.
          Report to the police.
          Report to scam watch.
Put the effort in to lodge a case with your bank and get the shipping service involved(Automatic if you give the bank those details). The bank will probably cover your losses.
Even if you think it is a small amount, it is important that an event is logged with your bank and hopefully by extension the thief's bank.

At least if you do something you may feel better about it.
Mass small crime = big crime.

        • @adammetalman: I will do what you suggested thank you :)

        • @adammetalman:
Hi I get replied from the scammer claim the account be used by someone else …
and he declared in his Facebook : his account been stolen and request his friends to ignore my message …

    Lol victim of the month.

    • What happened to make you the victim of the month? Did you have a moment of self-realization when you pressed comment and realized those seconds/minutes are not recoverable?

  • Go over to the address with a few bulky Maoris each with a machete. Problem solved.

  • LOL. This is truly hilarious.

  • +6

Go away. You people are beyond help.

List it on ebay next time.

  • +1

you tried to help for Mothers Day but got scammed. Sorry about that.
I had a few on eBay trying to buy stuff at a higher price than listed saying its also for a gift and need it ASAP. I can only assume they are scams if I went through with it.

    • This would be the lesson for me not to be careless any more . I did feel very stressful at the beginning days and keeping checking my account balance to expect the payment

  • +4

I cannot believe people keep falling for the same scam!

    1. Never send until the money is in your account
    2. Big red flag is when people talk about "urgency" of receiving the item
  • check electoral roll to see if the address matches name.
if it is, harass them until the cave in.

    • Just tried . No match . But parcel has been delivered successfully.

      • could be related to scammer so the resident has an out. by saying they don't know wtf is going on. either way the money is gone best to just move on and learn from this

  • $136 is cheap as far as life lesson goes.

  • +1

The old scams still work apparently.

Sorry you have lost your money OP but until people are more careful online the scams will continue.

    Maybe ACORN will be interested?

    https://www.acorn.gov.au/

    • Yes reported to the ACORN

  • Don't worry about it OP. Lesson learned.

If you want to make your money back plus a lot more, i have an uncle in Nigeria who is wealthy and needs to get his money out of the country. He will pay you if he can use your bank account to transfer his money. Just PM me your bank details and i will sort out the rest.

  • If only you had their address you could go around with some hired goons and get your money back.

  • Sorry dunno if much can be done.
Heard similar with fake paypal email, so you think money paid, but then money never arrives in account

  • +1

For this reason I only use PayPal.
You can se the funds arrive in your account immediately even though you might not have access to them sraight away
