[SA] Mistral Portable Air Conditioners - 12,000 BTU and 15,000 BTU Models - $100 Each @ Bunnings (Seaford, SA)

690

Two pallets of Mistral Portable Air Conditioners on clearance at my favourite bargain place - Bunnings (Seaford, SA). I've spent WAY too much money there lately on crazy markdowns, but these take the cake for the biggest bargain I've found so far :) These are just near the self-serve checkouts.

Two models available - 12,000 BTU (which was $140 on clearance on May 11th) and the 15,000 BTU model (which was $160 on May 11th) have both been marked down to $100 each. Approx 4 of the 15,000 model left, and 6-8 of the 12,000 model. Both stupidly cheap - the 15,000 model has a "was $349" on the photo below.

Photo of them at $160 earlier - https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/16708/58950/img_201805…

Goodness me that is a bargain!

Good deal OP which they were available locally in Melb

  • Does other Bunnings price match?

  • Is it possible to price match from Melbourne

    • No, unless the clearance is nation wide and your local store is just as keen to sell them they dont, but you can always try

Yes it is I do it all the time go into bunnings ask for the item
Show them clearance photo tell them head off said to show proof then the stor will mark it down

      • +7

I have tried many times with no luck, I am always told they do not match "clearance items" of other stores.

  • Holy heck that's a cheap way to keep cool next summer. Wonder if other SA stores have them marked down.

      Cheap a.c. expensive power.

      • +3

It's really not that bad though. I resisted portable AC for 5 years because I was fretful about getting bill shock on power. I finally broke down two years ago because I hadn't slept in a week, and over two summers of requisite use only (keeping the bedroom cool enough to sleep, so usually on for 3-5 hours a night during heatwaves), I haven't seen any tangible increase to my normal summer bill. In actuality the electric oil heater in winter seems to be dearer to run.

EDIT: Yeh, neg me. That'll change what happened.

Will SA have the power to run air conditioners next summer?

    • +4

Ironically with all the Tesla stuff they might be the only state to cope.

  • What other markdowns have you found there, it's my local.

  • +7

It's cheap compared to what it previously sold for but the reviews are utterly awful. No better than a fan, compressor quickly overheats cutting out, doesn't cool etc…

I wouldn't take it for free …. but it is a big discount so it deserves a positive vote just for the price.

I know someone who has one and it doesn’t cool things like an installed aircon. Rather it just takes the edge off things. Makes hanging out in his shed bearable.

    • I don't think any portable air conditioner could compare to an installed one. We had a portable one that was great if you were sitting directly in front of it, that is about it. On one really really hot day, it was actually cooler outside than inside, and we had the portable air cond. going in the bedroom for 2 days straight. It was a rental with no insulation, so that wouldn't have helped things. But still. Terrible waste of money.

  • any good alternatives?

    • +1

If you have to get one because you rent, choose a double duct. Not efficient like a split system but they work. Unducted spot coolers heat the room and single duct/unitary draw hot air from the outside making them horribly inefficient.

      • +2

Single duct units exhaust hot air to the outside, not draw it in. That would be ludicrous.

        • +3

Which creates negative air pressure in the room, drawing in the hot air from the outside.

        • For every litre of air they exhaust, a litre of hot air from outside, enters your home somewhere to replace it. That's how air pressure works.

You're absolutely right that it's ludicrous, never buy a single duct unit.

  • I love those. Bought one from bunnings years ago, used it all summer, then the following year it was recalled cause one blew up. Got my money back… bought a better one elsewhere.

12.000 BTU's of raw cooling power!

    Just in time for winter.

  • Called Mentone and Moorabin. No goski. They are saying its out of season and there none on the floor.
I think we are out of luck with these in Victoria unless you get lucky with a store specific special.
