    Superb price.

  • Is this healthier than white rice?

    • Brown rice has more nutrients, protein and fiber than white however they contain more carbs and fat. Brown rice also has a marginal lower GI (10%-20%). Personally I prefer brown for health reasons but white isn't that much different. I've noticed brown rice seems to need more water to cook (but I guess it depends on how hard or soft each person likes their rice).

    • It's the same inside, brown just has an outer part.
It has some extra nutrients but also extra mercury and arsenic.

Most of the world does prefer to process it into white rice.

        Not to mention… Extra DISGUSTING!!!

    • Technically yes, but not enough to warrant eating it it over white if you hate brown.

Tastewise basmati rice beats this type of rice IMO.

      Basmati is so dry

        You're supposed to add water…

    • OzBargain and their obsession with downvoting. I have used both varieties of rices, and I agree that Basmati tastes a lot better than Jasmine.

    I've been waiting for you….

  • I might try the brown rice

This is better than the medium grain that goes on sale a lot. Come at me

    • The jasmine one is much better than medium grain. The best supermarket jasmine rice is the coles brand jasmine rice, and it's relatively cheap ($11 per 5kg)

      • I don't like Coles brand Jasmine rice, it's not fragrant and taste like long grain rice to me

Beware that brown rice will go rancid quicker than white if you are planning store them

    • so eat before the expiry date?

      • I stock up when on special l, especially at wookies because I can get wish cards. Longest I’ve stocked up for is about 4-5 months worth. Still fine in a nice cool cupboard

        • Haha last time I stocked up on this was 50kg!!! Been waiting for weeks for this to come on special & got down to the last bag(Brown Jasmine) which was feral so I have been living on Aldi white rice for this time! Happy Days!!! 😊

PS: Wookies might just put it on a half price special too now! 😂

        • @Micko179: you saying the brown jasmine is no good?

        • @freemoneyhunter: I'm sure the powers that be would say that it's be better for you but let's just say that I don't like it. If I was on a 'non processed food' crusade I MIGHT put up with it, but until then….

  • Thanks op!youre the best!

  • Cheers Askhole!!!

  • I bought 2 brown rice bags today. I was thinking of buying 1 brown and 1 white but decided against it on health concerns.

    https://www.pritikin.com/why-is-brown-rice-better-than-white…

"White rice is essentially brown rice that has been stripped of the bran and the germ. The consequence of this refining is the loss of numerous beneficial ingredients, such as fiber, vitamins, minerals like potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus, lignans, phytoestrogens, and phytic acid, not to mention the complex, natural interplay of these many various nutrients." "Brown rice has six times more dietary fiber than white rice."

"Examining rice consumption and diabetes risk in nearly 40,000 men and 158,000 women over the course of two decades, the scientists found that people who ate 5 or more servings of white rice per week had a 17% increased risk of type 2 diabetes compared to people eating less than 1 serving of white rice per month.By contrast, people who ate 2 or more servings of brown rice per week had an 11% reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those eating less than 1 serving of brown rice per month.

Whole grains like brown rice, stated the researchers, often do not generate as fast an increase in blood sugar levels after a meal as refined grains like white rice do.

“From a public health point of view, replacing refined grains such as white rice by whole grains, including brown rice, should be recommended to facilitate the prevention of type 2 diabetes,” concluded the authors."

Whilst there is doubt that brown rice is healthier for you, it’s important not to draw too many conclusions from the research you quoted:

"Examining rice consumption and diabetes risk in nearly 40,000 men and 158,000 women over the course of two decades, the scientists found that people who ate 5 or more servings of white rice per week had a 17% increased risk of type 2 diabetes compared to people eating less than 1 serving of white rice per month.By contrast, people who ate 2 or more servings of brown rice per week had an 11% reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those eating less than 1 serving of brown rice per month.“

Remember that in this non controlled study people who choose brown rice are almost certainly going to be health conscious, eating less fats, fast foods etc, and exercising more than the average white rice eater - and hence there are numerous other factors that can explain the differences observed, not just the brown vs white rice diet

      • oops - first line should be "Whilst there is no doubt that brown rice is healthier for you …..".

And also thanks OP - I cleared out the shelf in my local Coles today, buying all the available bags of white Jasmine rice

I am eating a second bowl of brown jasmine rice now, total 3 cups worth cooked, I will compare to the Aldi's brown rice I usually buy. Both taste just the same to me, this is a much longer grain than the Aldi's rice. There are also approximately 10 rice grains per cooked cup which still has the hull intact, the Aldi's was 100% free of them but it doesn't worry me much. I ate most of the 1st bowl straight without any condiments but added some Kikkoman Reduced Salt Soy Sauce (anyone knows a quality cheaper low salt soy sauce please let me know) near the end and 1/2 cap to the second bowl and it did improve the taste of the rice, made it taste more interesting and as a result I ate the second bowl faster than the first bowl, I try not to use condiments or use them sparingly.

At the $6-$7 price point this rice is a very good buy but at the regular price, the Aldi's rice in 1kg packs is probably cheaper and more convenient so I will be buying my rice again from Aldi's in the future.

It's a very cheap dinner, I used 1 cup of uncooked rice so a 5kg bag contains about 25 cups so the meal only costs $0.27 and there is no other meal healthier either than brown rice.

Conclusion, in my book same as any other regular brown rice only reason for buying is this rice is currently cheap. Recommendation, just buy the brown rice which is the cheapest, it's all the same. White rice is different, there are different white rices that come out differently, but because brown rice has a stronger flavour you can't determine subtle differences in brown rice compared to white rice, the same is true of the texture, brown rice as has 6 times more fibre than white rice, the high fibre contributes the to the majority of the texture crowding out subtle differences in texture from different rice varieties.
