Cook & Dine Jumbo Frypan 30cm $6 (Was $10) @ Coles

180

Regular price is $10, this is the lowest price on Price Hipster's records.

This is your basic cheapo lightweight non-stick frypan. Non-stick surfaces degrade over time, so some recommend you to simply buy cheap and replace your non-stick cookware regularly.

Looks like Coles have set this promo to in-store purchases only.

these cheapo one will genrally last a year or so, good value and always new pans.
my friend used the old ones as lids. I use the old one to roast nuts etc.

Do you roast your own nuts?

      • show me how to please, video is better than a photo or two

    • Have to replace every few months.

      • It really depends what you are using it for.

In my opinion non stick is not good for all types of cooking.

A good way to test it, if you can clean the fry pan with paper towels when you are done, then its probably suitable for non stick cooking.

        • Can you please elaborate more about non-stick pans? I thought non-stick are meant to be good.

          @Homr:

Non stick are not really "good", it just is really good at certain things.

I have a stainless steel frying pan which I treat however I want. I cook at high temperatures, I use nice stainless steel utensils (better then non stick stuff) and I cook things that often don't suit non stick that well.

I can treat it badly and then I can get a scourer or even a metal sponge and destroy any foreign thing on it in 10 seconds to make it brand new.

I've had my stainless steel fry pan for 6 years.

In my opinion non stick is perfect for pancakes and other food that really like to stick, and the point of the food is that it doesn't stick to the pan.

If I'm cooking some chorizo, and then I'm going to throw in pasta sauce and other things, I don't want non stick.

I'll also add that if you use your non stick pan for everything, there is a good chance the non stick coating will wear away, and sometimes quite quickly.

Cheap non stick pans or certain types of non stick pans also don't last very long.

It has to wear away somewhere…. and that means its wearing away into your food and you are eating it.

Out of interest, did you season your s/s fry pan before using it? If so, would you describe how please?

        • +1

          @ifonlyiwasyounger:

You don't and can't season stainless steel frypans.

With cast iron etc you do.

Seasoning is actually a pain as well, if you cook something on it that needs proper cleaning with a scourer and soap, you will remove the seasoning and it will need reseasoning.

          Reseasoning is a pain.

Suggest stretch a bit further to the Tefal ones at Woolworths when they’re on sale ($21), they are incredibly good.
If you do want cheap Ikeas has one for $4.50.

    • Didn't think to check Ikea. That $4.50 one is 24cm, the 28cm is $7.99. Good regular pricing.

Just giving everyone feedback on the budget Ikea nonstick frypan, it was $4.70 at my IKEA, and for someone like me that doesn't cook much I thought it was a good deal.

I used it for omelettes mainly, and it cleaned up easily with a paper towel afterwards.

Then I tried cooking a small steak in it one night, you know, the cheap sizzle steaks Coles sells that are hammered so thin one can hardly call it a steak.

I like my steaks rare, and only flash fried it for a minute or so, but the juices for some reason burnt to the pan and left big black marks in the nonstick. It still functions as a nonstick but maybe not as well and aesthetically the pan looks crappy now.

My advice would be grab a couple 2x$4.50=$9, keep the good looking one for when you're cooking with guests and use the ugly but functional one for yourself alone.

Or just don't use non stick for things like steak…

    • The Arcosteel Stonehenge at WW is also very good and a good buy. Check the feedback on product review.
Tefal seem to have dropped in quality from reports?

  • do they work on induction?

    • no

    • No.
It is made of "aluminium body with a double layer non-stop coating".

  • The handles on these things never seem to last.. Otherwise they are very good for value.

    • You can screw it back in a few times.
