How Do I Become a DJ?

Another one I'd like to tick off the bucket list.

I' looking for courses I can attend that will teach the basics of being a DJ and putting tracks together.

I don't know if this will be a career change, but certainly was something I would have loved to do when I was younger. Unfortunately my life went to a different direction.

Any suggestions?

You need a DJ name first, can I suggest STDJ. Beats that don't seem to go away.

  • Youtube or Udemy is probably your best bet.

  • What kind of DJ? One that gets paid to just put songs in a list to autoplay after each other or actually producing new music?

if you're just interested being a DJ at parties etc (no music production) then download VirtualDJ and watch some tutorials on youtube on how to mix tracks to get started

if you're interested in producing electronic music then look no further than this

I watched Beverly Hills 90210, David Silver switches up his high school prom, to get started.

  • I see you're in Melbourne, there's a guy in Elsternwick who gives lessons. https://www.physikalmusic.com/physikal-music-mixing-school-d…

There's a guy called ellaskins on youtube who has some good tutorials. The main thing you need to learn is beatmatching, which is getting the speed of the next song to match the current one before you mix it in. If you're looking at DJing house/techno most people these days are just playing vinyl and mixing in new tracks without using any crazy techniques like beat juggling.

EDIT: Also something to note is that DJing (at least good enough to get you a gig in a local bar) is not that complicated and is no longer a rare skill to have. To get gigs you have to be fairly active in the scene or learn to produce your own tracks.

  • I found How to Dj for dummies to be a good read. Has a website to go with it called recess.co.uk

  • Digital DJ Tips is a good place to start.

They even have a YouTube Channel

  • Wear your trousers slung low and your underwear pulled up high, your hat backwards and some obnoxious jewellery

  • I kinda feel if you have to ask, being a DJ isn't for you!

  • YouTube has everything but if you want hands on try a quick tafe course in probably sound production and mixing.

Udemy is a good suggestion. Becoming a DJ is the easy part, modify some shitty new popular songs or mix them together for a nice shit soup. Becoming a good DJ however, I can't really help with that, they're like albino elephants.

you have to dress and behave like a complete douche or else nobody will take you seriously

  • Paris Hilton uses daddy's billions. Gabi Grecko uses sugardaddy's millions. The first move might be to hire a publicist and get on Daily Mail.
