New Proxy Mobile Number Service

Howdy ozbargain hive mind,

I'm in the process of launching a new proxy service for mobiles. Basically, you get issued a mobile number that you can use in place for signup spam/gumtree transactions/a new guzman account etc. Texts are forwarded on to your real number, and texts that you sent out will appear to be from the proxy number. No calling at the moment unfortunately.

For people that transact on gumtree heaps or have to give your number out to strangers on a daily basis, is this something useful?

P.S. Also looking for 10 people to alpha test if anyone's interested.

EDIT: I've turned on PM.

  • Would be useful to have the the incoming text passed to a script via POST as well.
Interest depends on the price :)

can i use this to harass anyone anonymously without getting caught like VPN ?

    • It's pseudo-anonymous. You have to send texts from your real number to the proxy number and it'll forward the text.

  • I am in:)

Please consider your obligations under the telco act (or your carrier's commitments under malicious call trace and CLI presentation Comms Alliance codes).
At the telco I work for, this would be a breach of acceptable use and be shut down quick smart.
You don't want to develop something for it to be unable to operate because no carrier will allow it.

    • This.
I don’t think you can do what you want to do OP.

    • hi mskeggs, good point and thanks for pointing that out.

There are 3rd party services (twilio, messagebird, etc.) that already enable this - albeit in an abstract way. I merely wrote an implementation.

That being said, I intend to only test with a small pool of individuals to gauge viability for the moment. The origin/destination numbers are recorded, and should something dodgy occur I intend to fully cooperate with the authorities.

My intention is to help, not harm but as with all tools it's a double edged sword I suppose.

  • I'm in

  • Count me in please! I am reluctant to give my number out, I seem to get harassed all the time. Woke up yesterday to all these missed calls from an unknown mobile number at 3am along with a text saying "who this, why you call?" but I certainly didn't ever try calling that number, and certainly not at 3am and definitely not while I'm in hospital. WTF!

    • while I'm in hospital

What were you in hospital for, Neenie?

        Hypozbargainism

      • Spinal fusion and disc replacement (all in my 30s!) I'm falling apart early I think

        • Ouch, poor li'l Neenie.

Wait till you reach my age, everything sags and fails.

  • Sounds good, can you turn on PM?

  • Sounds good
