How well does this work? Does anyone have real life experience? Just for occasional home use

      How well does this work?

hint: the price has dropped to 7.94.

Goos find OP +1, might get it tomorrow.

I like Bunnings, but once in a while when they bring prices down to compete with ALDI, I wonder how much they are ripping us? Competition is good for consumers but no competition hurts.

  • Never thought anout sharpening a drill bit yet getting a strong urge to buy. Be strong saying to myself.

  • +37

Yep. Wish Masters stayed open longer and gave Bunnings a stiffer competition which would have been a big win for the paying public. Alas. It wasn't meant to be.

Sigh… am missing Masters quite a bit. The store really had great quality products and even surpassed some of Bunnings' offerings.

    • +9

Yep, me too. A lot of the brands Masters sold were decent American gear.

      • +2

        I miss Gearwrench…

    • +1

Masters never had a chance to compete with Bunnings.
I remember every weekend driving by a masters there would be almost empty car park, where as driving by a bunnings its always full.

Also what I found is that every single Masters i went into were always staff who were teenagers or didn't know anything. Walking down an isle you are likely to be harassed by 2+ staff asking if you needed any help, because i think they used a commission/bonus system.

So they would keep harassing you and if you picked up something of high value, they would walk by chat with you then write their initials on it.

Remember they failed because of a reason, and it wasn't Bunnings fault, just their own management's fault.

      • +11

I used to work for masters. The only people who got commissions were the staff in appliances. The reason why you were descended upon was because we were trained and constantly encouraged to emphasise the customer service pretty hard. Or maybe you looked like you were going to steal something :p

        • +6

That is seriously one thing I liked about Masters. They had visible staff on the floor to help out customers. At Bunnings, I damn near have to sprint to a staff member if I spot them because I know about 7 other people are going to do the same and they're walking at breakneck paces to get to wherever. It's frustrating trying to get help sometimes at Bunnings. Guess they really stress the "Warehouse" experience.

      • The staff were just bored and trying to justify their job. It's pretty depressing working for a failing company with no customers. The writing is on the wall constantly and you do what you can to convince yourself you aren't redundant.

      • +1

@Iplau; They had lots of chance, they just took too long:

        • Getting started, establishing store locations (Bunnings had the good locations sewn up)
        • Setting up stores, and finishing all the important things like
          • Business Plan
          • Marketing Plan
          • Online stores
          • Operating Plan
          • Getting their CX figured out

What a bunch of boof-heads. Any manager left in Woolies that was a strategic part of that fiasco is a liability. Unbelievable that none of the competition stood up to the challenge to take over part of the Masters chain, and make it work. Given that it would have shown up how poorly Woolies managed masters, it was probably why they chose to liquidate rather than sell. [What other retail company would link its registers together in the cloud and have it all go offline to the point they have to shut shops as they can't even complete sales for customers standing in their queues? They didn't even mitigate single points of failure, and failed to manage risk in their operational architecture].

Now Bunnings is now acting like; 'all your house belong to us'

haha wow. I thought you were serious until "The store really had great quality products and even surpassed some of Bunnings' offerings."

    • +1

We're now seeing how Bunnings would fare when they aren't the incumbent bully boy operating in an ultra-conservative market i.e. Bunnings UK.

    • +3

Yeah, Bunnings getting burnt in UK.
Their launch into Homebase proving a complete failure.

  • +2

    I need this

    • At less than 8 bucks, can you afford not to have it?

  • This would be good if it worked.
Thirty years ago I had a plastic thing with a grinding wheel in it that attached to a drill, I had no success with it.
I do use a lot of <3mm drill bits.

    • +1

with the price of drill bits now (10 for $3 on ebay) sharpening hardly seems worth the time

      • +1

Yeah but what's the quality like. Cheap matters zip if you snap one with every hole you drill. e.g. I've bought discounted drill bit sets that looked like quality, but melted and twisted in half leaving the front half jammed in the hole, while drilling pilot holes in old fence palings. Then I've gone and bought Irwin bits to replace them, and as long as I let them cool between holes, they lasted.

        • Sure, for the larger sizes I totally agree. I had a cheap chinese screw drill bit that literally unscrewed itself when the head got stuck and the rest kept twisting.

  • youtube DIY methods.
this is at the extravagant end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FPERcaJxzg

    • +1

I'll just spend the $8 and buy the premade one. :p

      • Sorry, the $8 one is just a kit.

  • +1

Argh - I bought one of these last week….
It actually works quite well. I sharpened half a dozen bits with it to test.
The grinding wheel inside is replaceable, so I might go grab a couple of these as it would be cheaper than just a replacement wheel!
    Thanks OP.

      Return and rebuy?

      • +1

No, rebuy, then return rebuy with original (from first purchase) receipt.

  • How does it work with the extra ridged bit that on lots of drill bits these days?

  • +7

What I really need is a Drill Bit Un-Breaker Kit.

  • +2

will this also work as a pencil sharpener?

    • +2

118 degrees is a blunt pencil

      crayons maybe

  • +2

Be careful when checking out as Bunnings system doesn't seem to have updated.
Checkout tried to charge me full whack until I showed them link to their own webpage

  • i have had one of these for a few years, its crap, if it weighed more it could be a boat anchor.
yes it sharpens the drill bit and changes the angle of the face but the drill bit with its new angle is useless.

    • This. Agreed. This unit has a fixed angle. Bits have various angles depending on their purpose.

  • +1

I have tried a number of cheap drill bit sharpeners including a $100 one from Hare & Forbes (https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/D070?gclid=Cj0KCQjw0PTXBRC…) which looks the same as heaps of eBay ones and they have all been aweful. The H&F one totally ruins the angles on most bits & if I had bought it I would have thrown it in the bin. I know it is not in the same league in terms of price (about $200) but I picked up a used Drill Doctor 360X (eg https://www.totaltools.com.au/brands/drill-doctor/65291-dril…) and have to say it is brilliant. It is rare for me to rave about a tool but I actually look forward to sharpening bits now.

    • +1

The generic total tools bit sharpener isn't bad either on anything but the biggest bits.

Inspired by using one I also bought a barely used drill doctor 750X for $100 and a spare grinding wheel off
      bicwarehouse on eBay for $25au.

P&N/Sutton HSS quality cost real money ,
but gumtree can be your friend for finding boxes full of quality bits
and if you have a decent sharpener or a bench grinder and YouTube you're set.
Of course the next step is a drill press..

    • I've seen videos of the Drill Doctor.

I suspect the big difference is that the sort of 'eccentric' swivel motion while sharpening bits (with the 360) creates relief where as others just leave a constant taper.

Wondering if you'd agree turbo'…? On hearing your comment (thank you) I'm leaning towards looking out for a 360'.

  • Got one thanks, still 6 left at Mornington store in Tassie - up high in storage so you have to ask, not on the shelf.
For that price it's worth giving it a go on some tired good quality bits I have

    Cheers

    • Probably 20 left at Glenorchy / Derwent park Tassie store.

      Thanks OP.

    • Still about 6 left at Hastings Victoria. On the shelf outside tool department and at marked down price.

  • Got the last one at the Cairns store. Thanks muchly OP.

  • Thanks OP! Got one this morning. Good to see a fellow Ozbargainer with a set too at checkout before me. $7.94 for 3 years warranty, is “ozbargain” :)

    • Thank you, bought two for Xmas present. There are still five more in Pakenham, no more in Fountain Gate
      Sorry, pushed the wrong button!

  • Bunnings Woodville had about 20 while I was there this morning. They had a sign up for $29.90, but scanned at $7.94.

Picked one up at this price. Thanks OP!

  • 7 left at West Footscray

  • talk about single-use kitchen tools!
soon they will release another machine to sharpen the sharpener.

    • Shhhh … don't tell too many people about that great idea! Get it on Shark Tank and you good sir, could be rich!

  • Thanks OP!

Picked up 1 at [QLD] Mt Gravatt (Wrecker Rd) store. Can confirm there are about 14 left per my picture , some still in the boxes under the displayed units. In amongst making all of their ads I was able to get a Team Member to tell me it's a promotional item and not on clearance according to their POS. Will make a great gift

    • +1

The youtube link in the OP's description leads to the Ozito site and it notes that its a "propotional item" too.
One unopened box (of 4) left at Ellenbrook WA - in the Tools section.

      • +1

        Good to know, thanks @woodlake

  • Northlakes still have plenty in stock on an end stand.

  • None left at Kings Meadows.

  • None left at Joondalup even though the website shows as being in stock. Got one at Mindarie and they had 4 left when I was just there.

  • I bought two at the bargain price this morning at Modbury (Adelaide). Labeled at $29 but the register price is $7.94…
    Cheers to the OP.

  • Can anyone confirm if they're any good.
There may be a YouTube tutorial to help you get the gist , but I suspect them to be junk.

    • I can't compare to other options, but it did the trick on the two very blunt drill bits I tried it on. Did a test drill into a spare bit of softwood and they went in about 4 times as fast after sharpening.

Admittedly I blunted the drill bits drilling metal and haven't checked out whether they are any good for that now.

      • Easy for softwood ,
but do they drill into metal ,
or are youse all excited over nothing
        ???.??????

        • They didn't drill well into softwood before sharpening. I have no scrap metal lying around to try them out on.

  • About 6 left at Carseldine, QLD. In front of the tool shop.

  • Thanks op just grabbed one from Notting Hill VIC. I saw at least 3-4 there

  • Had to go to Bunnings Malaga WA to get one today and there is only one left now, in most Bunnings stores, there is none left. Now I have to try it to see if it was worth it.

  • The only way is by hand.

"This Old Tony" is a great channel for anyone interested in machining.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8oORR6jyh8

  • bought this, and the mini soldering iron from O'conner wa

    • Can you please let me know if they had plenty of stock? I've been to Osborne Park and Vice Park with no luck.

  • Thanks OP. Missed out at North Geelong but bought 2 at Waurn Ponds..one for my son. There were 4 left if anyone is still interested although always best to ring first. The guy in the tool shop said he purchased one and it worked extremely well.

  • I bought 3. Cheaper than replacement grinding wheels if you can buy them or I'll use them as Christmas presents.
