Wireless Qi charger - is this a SCAM?

I went onto eBay to buy a 'Qi standard' wireless charger for my iPhone X since Apple uses the Qi standard also.

So why is it that some eBay shops charge more for an iPhone X 'model' than for 'other Qi standard phone' chargers. They certainly look the same! Why should prices be linked to model of phone if they are all Qi compliant? Or is this just a scam?

Why don't you list the products you are comparing here?

    • The Apple one is probably for the pre iPhone X models.

    • see below!

I dunno, because they can? Putting an Apple sticker on it costs money?

then if they do because they can, then yes, I call that a SCAM!

      • It's called capitalism, get used to it.

        • +1

And the red ones charge faster too!

      • +1

It's not a scam unless the cheaper listing says "not compatible with iPhone".

Textbook case of Price Discrimination. Person typing in "iphone x charger" is likely to be willing to pay more. e.g. uneducated buyer is willing to pay $2 for peace of mind that it's compatible.

Alternatively, you could view this as an opportunity to profit through arbitrage, buy the cheaper charger, advertise it as "iphone x compatible" and charge only $1 more, thus undercutting the existing listings!

because people who fork out over $1000 for a phone are more than likely to pay more for the same item.

    turd on a stick $2
    turd on a stick (iPhone X) $50

not a scam. think of it as "Moron Tax"

agree,. they probably will get offended if paying the same low prices as android users.

      • Who would put their iPhone X on top of some generic Qi charger android imbeciles use? Yuck!
Did Meghan Markle wear a pair of Asics with her Givenchy dress? Cos Not!

        • sorry, but what is wrong with asics?

        • @wordplay:

Why would you ruin a high end designer dress with low end sneakers?

        • @Ughhh:

you have obviously not seen the ubiq x asics gel lyte v midnight bloom

        • @wordplay:

You reckon you can wear that to the ball with Givenchy dress?

We're talking Givenchy, not house party.

        • @Ughhh: Pretty clear you have no clue about sneakers because if you did you definitely wouldn't have put the words "low end" and "Acsic"in the same sentence!

        • @Mizzb23luvsadeal:

I don't recall Asics being a high end fashion house, along side Gucci and the likes.

Perhaps you can answer "Did Meghan Markle wear a pair of Asics with her Givenchy dress?" ??

You don't wear a pair of Asics shoes with a Givenchy dress, you wear Louboutins.

          Nikes better looking anyway.

        • @Ughhh:
          "nikes look better anyway"

You have just shown you have no credibility when it comes to fashion.

        • @wordplay:

Haha. A bit rich from someone who can't see the problem with wearing asics sneakers with a Givenchy dress to a ball.

        • @wordplay:

          comes to fashion

Well, I guess sneakers are a fashion, but fashionable? Sigh.

        • @Ughhh:
It was a wedding, not a balll.

        • @wordplay:

It appears you still don't get it, I'm sorry.

        • @Ughhh:

I get it, you are trying to say that asics are an undesirable shoe and nobody with class would wear them.
However both Prince william and Kate middleton have been know to wear asics.

        • @wordplay:
… No, it's called dress code. You don't Wear sneakers to a formal event.

Try telling your wife/gf to wear sneakers with her cocktail little black dress.

        • @Ughhh:
dress codes are made to be broken.
My wife/gf is all about high end fashion, she would not be seen dead in sneakers. She gets mad when I rock sneakers and a blazer/sports oat and jeans, but if its good enough for seinfeld its good enough for me.

        • @wordplay:

Dress codes are a sign of respect to the event you're going to. I hope you're not the type that wears flip flops to a wedding and I hope you can see the problem.

She gets mad when I rock sneakers and a blazer/sports oat and jeans,

Lol I wonder why. So even your partner questions your credibility/taste in fashion.

        • @Ughhh:

Look I get it you hate on asics,
my partner questions my taste in fasion because I can't justify spending many thousands on clothes like she does, its so crazy to spend $10,000+ on a single item, but it makes people happy. she can get the mabille and jarrar gear, but i can't justify spending that much on me.

I just like to look good. and trust me asics look good.

        • @wordplay:

I never said I hated asics, I said Nike was better, but thats my person opinion. The whole point was you don't wear sneakers to a formal event like weddings and balls- thats not my opinion, thats social etiquette. Correct me if I'm wrong, but afaik Asics don't make dress shoes?

I get your hate on one of the trendiest brand ever (Nike) and that you're a Asics fanboy who keeps pushing for the idea of wearing sneakers with a high end dress to a classy wedding.

and trust me asics look good.

Right… I asked a bunch of my girl friends at work about the ubiq x asics gel lyte v midnight bloom, they
          said "meh".

        • @Ughhh:

I think we will just have to agree to disagree.

      • paying the same low prices as android users.

There are some apps that are iPhone only as the feeling is Android owners are too poor or cheap to buy what they're offering.

Apps like calculating house painting costs, carpeting etc.

A a poor& stingy Android owner I had a bit of a chuckle at that.

You're only comparing items within a seller listing, not listing to listing. This is very specific to that particular seller, not sure why we have to discussed the selling policy on particular seller? You can easily just ask the seller directly to enquiry about the pricing issue. Beside a $2 difference can't be a major price difference, it may be just the same thing for most buyers, thus they will then just buy which ever suit their needs.

Note though, even item located in Victoria, the seller is based in China.

      • +1

You're only comparing items within a seller listing

That's his point. I can't think of a technical reason why an Apple version would cost $2 more.

  • +3

Just guessing, cause most iPhone X users believe more expensive would be better in quality?

  • +8

As an Android user, I would put this in the category of a scam.

As an Android user who reads that its only iPhone users getting scammed, I would let it slide.

    • As an iPhone user this made me laugh! :D

  • +3

Why do you care? you already got scammed when you bought an iphone.

    • +1

Ah… maybe…but are we not supposed to learn by our mistakes!!

      • +2

yeap. We are supposed to …. until the next iPhone comes out.

  • Normally people put in "[item] for Apple Iphone" or "Apple compatible [item]" because people are too dumb to realise that the technology is generic and can be used with any compatible device.

For example you can buy any 3.5mm male headphone jack replacement part for $1 but as soon as you search "APPLE 3.5mm male headphone jack" you see a $5+ increase in price because people are dumb. The thing is, ALL TRRS and below 3.5mm headphone jacks are connected the same.

These sellers prey on the ignorant and clearly you fell for it.

This is exactly like someone selling you the more expensive Panadol when the generic drug Herron is exactly the same in composition.

    • agreed, but no, I have not fallen for it. That's why I am asking here first, so I DON'T fall for it.

But, I think that the general conclusion here is that all the chargers are the same for different phone models, its just that they try to get more $$ from ignorant iPhone users!!

      • Oh ok. I had presumed you went ahead and bought it. That's good you didn't.

  • Maybe this one can output 1.5A @ 5V (7.5W), where as most Qi chargers will only output 1A at 5V (5W) + 1.67A at 9V (15W). Androids can use 9V charging so it doesn't matter either way for them, but iPhones can only charge using the 5V so in most cases are stuck with 5W; 7.5W is a 50% increase

Well, it doesn't actually state 1.5A but this is based from the 2A input current- take that with a grain of salt plus never trust specs on cheap Chinese products
