Negotiating Gym Membership Fees

I'm with a 24 hour gym who is now offering a deal for new members that's cheaper than what I'm currently paying. Would I able to negotiate a cheaper membership as an existing member? Or is that a bit of a stretch?

  • I doubt it if you under contract but no harm in trying I suppose.

Make sure you do it so no one can hear you so the manager isn't worrying about other members catching on.

You will have more chance of success if you are near the end of your contract, or on a month-by-month deal.

When I went to cancel my membership at a 24/7 gym I was offered 1$ off my weekly fee or something in attempt to keep me on.

You definitely should try, but unlikely.

  • are you on contract?

no, why would they. If prices went up would it be reasonable for them to ask you to pay the higher price? and what 2 words would you say if they did ask.

Maybe if your membership is up for renewal, otherwise there's little to no motivation to drop the price.

  • Threaten to leave to another gym who is offering a lower price.

  • I tried this with RecXpress and they reduced it from $12 to $10 per week, now new admissions are $11, but i still stay in $10

Pay yearly in cash, dont give your bank details to them.

    • some gyms continue charging even after you leave.
    • work out weekly charge and ask for a discount 20%

They're a business; anything is possible so long as it's profitable for them. For example, is it more profitable for you to pay less or lose you as a customer?

  • If you don't ask, there's a 100% chance you won't get it.
