Seeking Suggestions and Advice for Driving Lessons in Melbourne

Hi,

I have recently got my Learners Permit and looking for starting the driving lessons. Need some advice such as -

  • What things should I consider for selecting the instructor?
  • What locations are good to learn the driving?
  • How much is the right amount to pay for the lessons?
  • Which driving classes are good and which are not-to-opt?

Thanks!

  • I never drove with an instructor only with my parents. We normally drove at around 7 - 9 am when there were fewer cars on the road.

Wouldn't there be loads of cars on the road at 7-9am?? Did you mean pm?

      • I suppose he/she means early-ish morning on sundays, maybe saturdays as well depending on the location

  • Do a google search and check out reviews. If your in Melbournes South East Bayside my son just used an instructor for 5 lessons. PM me and ill chase up details for you. Rest now is up to us driving with him. The logged hours are hard. Son at Uni and just cant put in the hours. Id say you need to drive at least 1 hr a week to get through it.

Definitely this, I only learned to drive last year after multiple attempts, lessons would always get too expensive and I'd stop before I got all the way. But then when I would try again I seemed to have forgotten most things.

If you have a friend that will let you just practice driving around in their car, even if they aren't actively teaching you anything, it will be quite valuable. So that driving starts to feel normal.

      • Could you please suggest how much is too expensive, if it's not too personal?

I think I paid $50 or $60 for an hour's lesson. When I finally learned to drive I ended up taking about 10 lessons all up I think. That was with driving to work and home every day though, and an hour or two practising parking each weekend.

I was over the age where you had to have a certain number of hours, so I only had to learn until I was ready for the test.

Driving one hour a week means that it will take more than two years to get your required hours up. I don't think it's enough to become proficient.

    Things to consider:
    - Find an instructor that you can comfortably communicate with. Not just language, but someone that you just feel at ease with.
    - Find an instructor that operates near to where you live, as that will make the lessons handy for all.
    - Don't do any driving with family / friends until your instructor indicates you are skilled enough.
    - Don't avoid any locations to drive in. Chances are you will need to drive everywhere at some stage; the skill is having the confidence to know that you can handle it.

    • That's a really good advise. I'll keep these points in mind. Thanks!

  • As per google reviews, I could find 2 driving schools where more people have posted the reviews (4.8 rating with 400 reviews should be better that the 5 star rating with 1 review)
    I could short list -

    1. Master Driving School (https://www.masterdrivingschool.net.au)
    2. Sprint Driving School (https://www.aasprint.com.au)

    Any OzB reviews for these?
    Any other suggestions?
