SlideIT Keyboard for Android Half Price (US $3.99)

70

I tried out the free version of this software a couple of months ago and loved it until it expired. It at least doubled my typing speed compared to the standard keyboard on my HTC Desire. But I didn't want to fork out the $8 they were charging at the time for the full version.

It's now available from the SlideIT site, and the Android market for US$3.99.

According to their website "This promotion is only available for a few days".

    Swype is free!

    http://beta.swype.com/

    • Yeah, how is OP's different to swype?

      • Well it's a different app! But as far as I know it is the same concept as swype.

Swype is still in beta remember, even though it's easy to get into the beta. When it goes out of beta, once everyone relies on it (I know I do), what's the bet they put a price tag on it?? :P

        • Do you know if all users will end up having to pay for it?

I'm have a Galaxy S and thought it was free for me cos it comes installed by default in the Samsung-ified Android.

      • SlideIt supports QVGA.

        Swype does not?

        That's the only difference.
I also prefered how the text prediction options come out in a bar instead of popping up in the middle of the screen and obscuring the entire text input field, which Swype does.

Another good one is Shapewriter but it seems to have disappeared off the market.
You can still grab the APK file here (note: this is a beta with no expiry)

To install it you need to enable non-market apps to be installed.

    • Agreed, looks alright but Swype does basically the same thing for nothing (at the moment).
Plus, how am I really meant to trust them with such a poor website?

  • Just tried it and it's a big improvement to my fat thumbs on portrait profile! Thanks

  • Try Vlingo instead. No typing, use speech recognition instead of pecking at any kind of keyboard.

    And its free.

Much prefer Swiftkey, which is on special in the market for $1.99 until the end of January, and there's a free version to try it out. For me, it's the fastest of the available keyboards, and I've tried all the ones I could find.

  • I have been using SlideIT for the last few days, and have been a Swype user since around May last year. Some of the things I hated about Swype:

    • Re-installation required after an OTA. That means finding my beta login + password etc, as it's not available in Market.
    • Seems to be CPU and memory intensive.
    • Seems to remember random words, and many steps to unlearn them.
    • Unable to disable tips that keep popping up after I made a choice. Yeah that's annoying.
    • Doesn't work in ConnectBot, when I try to ssh into a Linux box.

But overall still a lot faster than Android's default keyboard.

I actually liked SlideIT over Swype in the way it operates. However I cannot fathom why SlideIt, similar to SwiftKey, requires to take over 1/2 the screen.

  • Swype comes for free and pre-installed on LG Optimus One (Android 2.2). Works great.
