Can I Use NBN Modem/Router for Cable or ASDL2+?

I'm currently renting where I'm using TPG's NBN. I've just bought bought a place in a suburb which doesn't have NBN yet. Thinking that I'm never going to need an ADSL modem, I gave my old one away when I moved to NBN but seems like I need it again.
Can I use NBN modem (TPG uses Huawei) for Cable/ADSL2+ if I sign up with one? Or will I need to get a new modem for either of those?

  • The CG3000V2 Modem can accept NBN a connection, Cable Connection as well as an ADSL2+ Connection.

Non-NBN HFC areas require Telstra or Optus modem. You cannot provide it yourself unless you buy a Telstra/Optus modem secondhand.

  • yeah I remember reading in the manual that the TPG supplied modem does ADSL2+ but I havent tested it. In the modem settings the VCI thing is preconfigured for ADSL2+ so good luck!

Best bang for buck device that covers all is a TG799 (ex telstra) or tg789 (iinet), both made by Technicolor. Available often "brand new in box" from ebay or gumtree for well under $50.

The only limitation is they do not support vlan (TPG) although I do not think vlan required for adsl with tpg.

Gigabit ports, wireless AC, excellent for bridge mode adsl or vdsl (nbn fttn). Broadcom chipset for best performance on difficult adsl lines.

Iinet (and myrepublic) tg789 support any sip voip provider (iinet 2 lines). The tg799 can be exploited to permit 3rd party voip. Otherwise for internet is NOT locked to Telstra.

Can also be used as access point later to extend network.

    • Another TG799 evangelist!
      Hello brother… :-)

    • Is there a link somewhere listing compatible USB dongles for 4G backup?
